Linux has much more community support, which is better than official documentation as it allows users to show how they tackled things. Linux is also a lot smoother when using it. As a system administrator, it's much better performance wise for most things.

I am planning to use my old PC: i7 Q6600 + 8 GB RAM + EVGA X58 mobo

 

 

Data storage (still undecided on which raid conf.) and streaming. 5 PCs will be on the network.  

 

 

OS: Ubuntu LTS ( 1X.04) - Server

Data Storage: zfsonlinux (so no need for raid configuration) - raidz1 = similar raid5

Streaming: MiniDLNA (without transcoding) / MediaTomb // PLEX (with transcoding)

 

Because you PC Specs are decent consider:

 

1. Steam Streaming Client Machine (connected to your main tv)

2. Teamspeak / Mumble server
