CPU Upgrade

I'm planning to upgrade my CPU because recently I upgraded my GPU from an GTX 1060 to a RTX 2070. The current CPU I have is a i7 7700k, which I know is still a good cpu for gaming and in general. I play CPU heavy games like GTA V and League of Legends and after I upgraded my GPU the games have not felt as fast. I'm planning to upgrade to i7 8700k or i7 9700k. Yes I know if I do decide to upgrade my CPU to either of those two then I will also have to upgrade my motherboard. I want to know if it is worth it to upgrade my CPU.

7700k should not bottleneck an RTX 2070. And you mean when the RTX 2070 had lower framerates than your GTX 1060?

You still have arguably one of the top 5 CPUs for gaming, and as others have said you won't gain much.

 

Are you overclocking the 7700K?

I'm getting around 65% CPU usage and 90% GPU  Usage

Recently in Gta V my frames sometimes will drop below 60 fps which was lower them my GTX 1060 at the same settings.

can you try running DDU to clear your current nvidia drivers and reinstall the latest version again.

Do this.  Will bump the 7700K up a good bit in performance.

I have a follow up question for this post concerning my computer. I dont know if i need a new thread or can add on I'm new to forums (sorry in advance). I have a gtx 1060 and an i5 7600k i want to upgrade to the rtx 2070 but my concern is my cpu being the weak point I wont get much performance increase with this upgrade. Is it worth upgrading to a rtx 2070 and look at upgrade motherboard and cpu later or should I upgrade my cpu and motherboard to a coffee lake cpu. I don't have enough money to get all 3 so that isn't an option at this time. Thank you ahead of time for any feedback.

Depends on the game.

 

A 1060 will hold you back in many new games at 1080p, and so will the 7600k.

 

In some games the 7600k is fine and the 1060 is the limiting factor.

 

What games do you play and what is the performance like that you are unhappy with?

It probably will bottleneck on some non desirable degree. The 7600k it's just a quad core, basically an i3 8350k. It's slower than a Ryzen 5 1600, which is a two generations old ryzen 5 in a generation that wasn't so great for gaming. The 7600k got old much, much faster than the 7700k. I'd probably look into upgrading the processor and platform first, but avoid intel for now, their current offerings are really underwhelming, and the 1151 platform is pretty much dead. If for some reason you're dead set on intel then wait for the next gen

Currently nothing is really limited by my current set up. The most intensive game I would say I play is Assassins Creed Odyssey. I would like to upgrade for games like Cyberpunk 2077, and Baldur's Gate 3 and also looking to move into 4k I have a friend giving me his old 4k non g-sync monitor because he upgraded. I also would like to see what the hype behind ray tracing is.

Those games will want more than a quad core, and also more than a 1060.
