Do I need 200/200?

Thenelwave

So I had an issue with my stream as of last night ..

I live by myself and probably have 3-4 devices and maybe only have 1 other than my computer connected to the internet while streaming .. never all 4 at once.

I started streaming July 4th and had no issues with my stream until yesterday.

My stream lost quality and started lagging for the first time yesterday. I didn’t change anything on my PC so I found it weird. An issue I did have in the past before I ever started streaming is that my internet would go on and off for about a second. Since it would be every so often I never called about it. When this began happen to my stream I didn’t stop to think if that issue from the past could be part of the issue I had with my stream (you’ll understand more below).

Now after that problem yesterday I’m watching streams and the streams are losing quality as well quality drops and goes back up and I will disconnect and reconnect now it seems to happen every few minutes.

I called verizon fios

Is there any benefit to having 200/200 mbps speeds instead of 100/100?

One rep said I was going over my 100 .. said I was averiging 150 a day for the past month and that I should bump it up to 200 and will have no issues.

2nd rep said he couldn’t see my average but that he is sure if I up the speeds it will fix everything

3rd rep .. said I shouldn’t need anything more than 100 .. and he pinged my internet I believe is the word he used and I was getting under my 100/100 he did it 3 times .. one time I had 60 uploads another 40 another 70 point is it kept going up and down and he said that its a network issue on their end .. that I dont need any new equipment or any upgrades. He also said that he is unable to see what I was averaging unless he monitored my internet daily but that if I was able to stream for the last two weeks with no issues that it wouldnt make sense for it to happen now so 100/100 should be good for me. He also mentioned they probably made all that up to up sell me.

I don’t know whos right here although the last guys story makes sense because if im not getting 100/100 that would explain the streams im watching going up and down and when im trying to stream it lagging or looking muddy.

These are all fios reps.

I guess what im trying to understand is if 100/100 is enough to stream at the best quality ? So I can avoid the upgrade to 200/200 for an extra $10 or if its worth it.

Does the 100/100 home fios internet work just as wireless cellphone providers ? Where it can get throttled? That’s something I don’t understand. Bandwidth is what im allowed to use at any giving time right ? Where on like AT&T wireless ( my phone ) I have unlimited but throttled after 22GB just an example.

Also bonus question

How do I check if someone installed a VPN on my PC ? How can I confirm that its uninstalled or deleted. The only other thing I remember using yesterday was downloading an app called surf vpn on bluestacks to play a game that was not available in my region .. but I deleted bluestacks and nothing changed. Idk anything about VPN’s so not sure if I screwed something up but regardless bluestacks works as an android device so not sure if anyone can clarify if that effected my PC.

sorry for the dumb questions.

my last question is if I can wipe my whole computer .. without a cd or USB ? I tried it before calling fios and it only wiper my ssd but not my hard drive .. now I just want a clean start since I already wiped half of my things ( for no reason ) since the issue did not go away. I should have called fios before trying that.

edit: I stream on twitch

They all are lying to you jut to get your money. Download speed has no effect on your streaming, thats all upload and bitrate you have set. Since you stream to an ingest server with YT or Twitch or Mixer, or insert X streaming site, they ahve to take that footage, and transcode it then upload it to your page. Chances are they were just having some issues on the site/transcode side and likely nothing wrong on your side.

Sorry when the guy pinged me he was telling me my upload and download speeds .. and they were both going up and down when he pinged me (checked my connection)

also that wouldn’t explain my internet disconnecting and reconnecting so the last guy has to be telling some truth.

Also when you say transcode are you saying my network provider was having issues transcoding ?

thanks for taking the time to reply. Appreciate it but I dont think the last guy was lien since he was not trying to sell me anything and he also mentioned that it was a network issue on their end that he put in a ticket for.

no the transcoding is done on the websites server side... so on YT servers, Twitch server, Mixer servers etc...

Firstly, "pinging" you won't measure your speeds.  Now its possible they have some form of speed test that checks the ping at the same time, but its definitely the wrong terminology to say they "pinged" you.

Second, if the speed from them to you is varying a lot, that's THEIR problem.

Granted, they probably don't guarantee speeds so its something you have to live with.  There is certainly merit that the faster speed you subscribe to, the faster average speed you should generally get.

Still with a 100/100 service, you should definitely not be having issues with streaming as usually that would only need 1/16 of that.
