Installing Windows using ISO??? (Help needed)

Hey there,

So I'm planning my new build now and have just realized that I have forgotten to account for having to install Windows 10 on the new PC.

Through some very brief googling I have found a download link on the Windows website that allows me to download a "Windows 10 Disc Image (ISO File)".

What is an ISO file and what can I do with it? Does this mean that I can put this file onto a USB and when booting my newly built PC through the bios and then selecting to boot with the ISO file on the USB that it will install windows?

From reading this article:

https://www.digitalcitizen.life/how-install-windows-10

It seems like it would be getting windows for free???? Because if so, that seems too good to be true.

Any help or suggestions on how I can get Windows 10 onto my new PC would be very much appreciated. Now I'm not talking about trying to dodge paying, but given that I won't have a CD drive (like I did last time), I'm not quite sure how I'll do it.

Thanks!

You can make a Windows 10 installation media with a USB drive.

Your PC should detect the USB drive and launch the Windows 10 installer (on the usb).

ISO is an image, it's the contents of a disc saved into a file.

You can burn it to a DVD or use it to create a flash drive that will boot your computer to Windows setup.

You'll need a tool to install the .ISO file onto a flash drive, here's one I use: https://unetbootin.github.io/ Use the "disk image" option at the bottom when creating your boot drive. It's not getting Windows for free, you still need to buy a key (unless you have one). You might not even need to go into the BIOS to boot from it, it should just boot right to it, beings it should be the only bootable media at the time.

An ISO image is a disk image of an optical disc. In other words, it is an archive file that contains everything that would be written to an optical disc, sector by sector, including the optical disc file system. ISO image files bear the .iso filename extension. Wikipedia

Okay, I'll look more into doing that. Thank you.

I see. That clarifies it some more. I think I'll try stick to creating a flash drive, I can't be bothered to go out and buy an external disk drive.

Okay. Thank you! I'll go look into that. Just checked Windows 10 prices, it's getting real expensive now at around 130-140 USD. Crazy if you ask me.

So suck it up. That's the retail price for Home version, and it has been that since XP days (aka as long as I've bought OS) Retail price for Pro is $200USD. You can get OEMs cheaper, $80 for Home and $130 for Pro.

You can reuse old key if it's connected to your Microsoft account. Buying keys that are sold for less is as bad or worse than using OS without paying.

Just wanted to make mention that the link to Microsoft that Earnhardt provided has all the information and tools from Microsoft you need to Create an installation USB. Just scroll down and browse the "Using the tool to create installation media". There is no need to bother around with iso and third party software. Once you finish creating the Install USB then just follow that guide you linked to (or the multitudes of online guides, Youtube videos).

You can go ahead and install Windows 10 without purchasing a key right away. As Linus mentioned in some of their videos, this may be a good way to test things out, as Windows 10 does allow a trial period, although some functioinality will be limited. Once you feel comfortable that everything works (or saved up enough? :P) you can then purchase a key and activate it.

CPU: Vulnerable to Meltdown | Motherboard: Has LEDs that I can't see | RAM: Bought too much | GPU: Mostly satisfactory so far in our relationship | Case: Shiny, black, very heavy and tall, with a Firefox sticker | Storage: Has too many old HDDs | PSU: Hasn't blown up yet like it's predecessor | Displays: Mismatched from Craigslist | Cooling: As many Noctuas as there are fan headers | Keyboard: Keys are fading |  Mouse: Needs cleaning |

Question: Is this brand new hard ware layout and OS. Like are you going from an older machine? If you are just hardware upgrading a windows 10 machine, you can use Ssyprep. Then the question is if you are using the same HHD or a new one. New: Image the old and slap it on the new. Just keeping the old: pop it right in there and let windows install all the need drivers. Also you might want to just have the network drivers just in case. Windows 10 is great about having usable generic networking drivers, but it never hurts to be safe.
