PC erasing icons/files

So last night while I was on watching a movie on my computer I minimized VLC video player, I noticed my desktop wallpaper turn black,  and all my desktop icons disappeared all my stuff in my taskbar also got corrupted because when I clicked on them it said files cannot be found. And my computer started acting funny like my right click on my mouse was delaying at times. So I clicked on Start Button, And all my install programs are not there. But all my programs are still on my C Drive and working.  Oh my specs of below in my signature referred to gaming PC.Oh my specs of below in my signature referred to gaming PC.

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 (95watt @3.5Ghz @1.40V), MOBO: ASUS M2A-VM, RAM: Kingston 8GB (4x2GB) DDR2 800MHz, GPU: nVidia GT 710 2GB DDR3 (OC’ed Clock to 1300Mhz and Memory to 950Mhz), STORAGE: 250GB HDD, 500GB HDD, COOLER:  Cooler Master 212 EVO, PC CASE: Cooler Master Q300L , FANS: 3 x upHere RED LED Fans (2 Front, 1 Back), PSU: Generic 300 Watt PSU.

 Anyone know what’s wrong I’ve never had this problem before but I did submit an RMA to get my drive replaced .

 I guess but I didn’t reinstall windows I just put the icons back on to the desktop from the C Drive.  Everything seems to work but I just don’t understand why it erased everything off my desktop and then also my Firefox and my Chrome signed me out of that and started all my browser is like I just reinstalled it.  Also I try to do a system restore and it said my system restore was off which is not true because I had seen it ON 2 days ago and made a restore point.

This is actually happened twice to me the first time I installed windows on this drive it work for three months and then went through a cycle where it will start windows and then shuts itself off.   So I reinstall windows again after a couple months this is this happening start deleting files.
