I built the PC I have now at the end of 2017 and definitely made a few mistakes:

  • CPU
    Ryzen 1700x
  • Motherboard
Asus X370 Crosshair VI Hero Wifi
  • RAM
    4 * 8 G.skill RGB DDR4 2933 Mhz
  • GPU
    EVGA GTX 1080Ti SC2
  • Case
    Fractal Design Meshify C
  • Storage
    Samsung 960 EVO 500GB
  • PSU
    EVGA 750w G3
  • Display(s)
    Dell SG2716DG +  2xDell U2515H
  • Cooling
    Corsair H100i V2

The SSD was definitely overkill and the memory I purchased wasn't B-Die, but otherwise it was a solid build. Going forward, what should I upgrade or replace? My graphics card is great but the 1700x does hold it back some, though it's less of an issue at 1440p. Would a Ryzen 3000 series chip be worth putting in this motherboard, considering it is X370? I'd like to get more out of my graphics card if possible. Are there any other upgrades that might make sense?

Everything is good except your CPU.

This should be your priority for gaming (and fast) :)

It's hard to say without any benchmarks or tests with the new chips yet. You do have a high end board but I wouldn't really try out the new chips on that board until someone else does. The only upgrade I would consider is CPU/mobo maybe, everything else is completely fine.

Yeah gaming is my only issue at times.

I'm wondering if it's even worth running a newer CPU on such an "old" board since XFR won't work quite right if I remember correctly.

Or perhaps I could get a second 1080ti used on ebay. It'd give me a more solid fps in games like destiny 2 and fortnite (where I don't want to lose any fps at all) and would let me disable sli and use one dedicated for rendering.

You'd be better off saving up and then seling your current 1080 ti for the 2080 ti.

Most games don't even support SLI and last time I checked I don't think anyone is going to anytime soon.

That being said the 1080 ti is still great. You'd be better off just upgrading your cpu and mobo. New Ryzen chips are coming out and even if you don't want to spend money for the new 3000 chips the price on the 2000 chips will, most likely, drop so you could see what the discounts are like and buy a 2700 and a x470 mobo comco at a microcenter for like $400-$500 and still have the option to upgrade to a 3000 chip down the line.

Yeah good point. Still though, my 1080 ti is definitely plenty for now, especially if I get a Ryzen 3000 chip. I'm considering getting the 12 core one, possibly with the same motherboard but I might also upgrade. About the RAM, though, it's not B-Die and it's 2933 Mhz, but perhaps Zen 2 cares less about memory than Zen 1. I love microcenter though!
