Well, I've had some issues recently all of which culminated in a BIOS update and a fresh Windows install. Now, can't get Windows to update to the latest version (I'm still on version 1709), either through the auto update or Windows Update Assistant. Also I'm constantly getting Pfn_list_corrupt bsod now.

Had memory management come up, but seem to have fixed that.

So what does it mean, and where should I be looking for issues?

Why did you updated the bios?

Was there any issue?

Never update the Bios if everything run just fine!

I would have  to disagree with the ‘never’ part here.

I would test the memory (RAM) in the computer using a bootable CD/DVD or usb stick with memtest86 : https://www.memtest86.com/download.htm

If you get memory errors, that's your problem.

Alternatively, If you're running the memory at high speeds like 3200 Mhz, maybe try lowering at 3000 Mhz or increase the memory timings a bit in BIOS, and test memory again.

The Pfn_list_corrupt  error seems to refer to disk drivers (mechanical drives, SSDs) not being able to read some stuff from drives, which could be either due to data being actually corrupted on the drives or maybe the driver prefers placing the data in RAM as temporary storage and the data could be corrupted there (so bad memory could be a reason)

Try installing the latest AMD or Intel chipset drivers, which should update the sata controller drivers as well to the latest versions.

See the recommendations on this page : https://www.thewindowsclub.com/pfn_list_corrupt-windows

basically 2 use the sfc tool to scan for system errors  , 3. scan hard disk for errors by opening a command prompt with administrator rights and you type there chkdsk drive_letter: /F /R

/f means fix and /r says it's ok to restart pc if it's needed and drive letter ... it's the drive letter , type there c or d or whatever

Also try disabling OneDrive the page seems to think OneDrive could cause such issues... see hint 5

/r is 'repair', which for C: requires a restart; other drives won't. Repair is checking the drive for bad sectors and takes substantially longer and should be the last thing you try.

Okay, tried all the steps. Memory is fine, no disk errors, scannow revealed no problems.

I'm at a loss. My brother who's been building PCs since the mid 90's also has no idea.

Maybe it's my version of Windows (1709)? Auto update assistant and update fails to install the latest version of Windows.

I'm out of ideas. Maybe Linux? :)

Ran memtest again, multiple times. Different dimms in different slots, etc.

One faulty memory stick! Sucks, but at least I know what's up now. Thanks for the advice people.

Ps: As a fairly new PC owner, these issues can be daunting to try and figure out, but I love the learning process through problem solving!
