Dual 1440p Dell Displays with MBP 2015 and T470s with Ubuntu

thomasdewulf

Hi

I've got something of a special problem.

Currently I'm using 2 laptops:

- A Macbook Pro Late 2015 running MacOS Mojave

(Relevant) Ports: 1 HDMI, 1 Mini DisplayPort, 2 USB 3

- A Lenovo ThinkPad T470s running KDE Neon (Ubuntu)

(Relevant) Ports: 1 HDMI, 1 USB C, 2 USB A

I currently own a Dell U2515H (1440p) and I'm looking to buy another one.

I'm looking for the best way to connect both the monitors to the laptops without too much cable switching. Laptops won't be used at the same time. Both the screens should be used with one laptop at a time.

Things I've thought of:

- Daisy Chaining -> Won't work with the MBP apparently

- USB A Dock -> Haven't found one that'll definitely work with Mac and Linux. Let me know if you know!

Does someone have a suggestion how to solve this?

Considering that you will be cable switching anyways when you move the laptops, if you can connect a monitor via USB-C you can do

- HDMI shared cable (always)

- DP > mDP (for the mac)

- Either mDP female to usb c male for the thinkpad or a dedicated DP>USB-C
