I tried doing as much with my computer audio a couple of months ago. I originally thought that I could just find some amp and sub that I could then feed with my sub out on my mobo. Doing some preliminary tests I couldn't make it work and according to my personal research online the sub out is only good for the LFE (low frequency effects) channel in movies. Games (as far as I know) and music don't use this channel so you don't get anything out of it. This manifested itself to me as getting output from the subwoofer out in sound driver software and nothing anywhere else.

What I ended up doing is running the amps for each off a splitter setting up separate passive crossovers for the speakers and sub to divide up frequencies. It's a little sloppy but it's about as much audio as I feel comfortable having in an apartment anyway.

If you wanted to do such a thing the easiest would probably get an active sub, run that off a splitter (unless there is a problem with such a setup that I don't know of) and set the crossover so the subwoofer covers what your speakers can't.

Though I'm not an audio expert so feel free to wait for feedback from others. This is just my experience.

My rig: 2600k(4.2 GHz) w/ Cooler Master hyper 212+, Gigabyte Z68-UD3H-B3, Powercolor 7870 xt(1100/1500) w/AIO mod,

8GB DDR3 1600, 120GB Kingston HyperX 3K SSD, 1TB Seagate, Antec earthwatts 430, NZXT H2

Verified max overclock, just for kicks: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2609399

In many audio forums, many people rave about BK's subwoofer line, saying commonly that they outperform other subs at twice the price point.

I have a XLS200  and simply run a 3.5mm Y splitter (one end to my speakers and one end to a 3.5mm Female to rca male which then connects to the sub)

Im in australia and got my xls 200 shipped and i couldnt be happier, you might want to consider stretching to the Gemini, It gets excelent reviews..

Good luck in your search, I hope my advice helped :)

  • 1 month later...

Thanks everyone for your input, sorry this is kind of late. But i ended up just taking a Y-splitter 3.5mm from my sound card, running a regular cable to my speakers, then using a 3.5 to RCA to the sub and it worked just fine!! Ended up going with a Polk Audio PSW10
