Hey all, need some input on what is going wrong with my current setup. Backstory, built this system (specs at end of post) and the CPU was running hot, shocker. Bought a Corsair H150i and that brought temps down but was always idling at stock speeds around 35-40C and would hit mid 70's after a few hours of streaming and gaming, with core 1 hitting mid 80's. Delidded, applied liquid metal and resealed the CPU with silicon gasket stuff and let it sit in the vice that came with the delid kit for 2ish hours and another hour in the system as I was reassembling. I'm running a stable 5ghz OC at 1.335v to the CPU, but the temps are stupid. Max of 75-80 on a run of Cinebench, and after half an hour mid 80's with core 1 hitting 96C once. With a 360mm AIO I would think this is too high. The other thing I noticed is that my temps fluctuate, from mid 60's to high 70's/low 80's on core 2-6 while 1 hits high 60's to low 90's. And it does this rapidly. I've redone the thermal paste on top of the CPU once and had a perfect amount the first time, would this need another liquid metal treatment again or do I just have a bad chip? Using both HWMonitor and Corsair Link to track the temps as it runs.

8700k

32gb DDR4 3200mhz (It's Corsair Vengeance sticks)

Corsair H150i

Asus ROG Strix Z370 E mobo

Running OS off of a SSD

NZXT H700i case, all panels are off during this testing

If I can't resolve this I'm about to buy a 9940X and an X299 mobo to use for streaming, I was hoping to use this chip for the next couple months but it's beginning to piss me off.

*Asus Multicore Enhancement was turned off for all of this

Is your cooler tightened all the way? Did you remove all the old silicon from the IHS? Did you apply a bunch of new silicon adhesive (you don't need ANY, by the way, and too much could increase distance from die to IHS too much). What is your room ambient temperature?

I'm running a much less robust cooler on my chip and with more voltage, and i get about 20c less than you on Realbench/A64

Cooler is tightened all the way down, I did remove all the silicon and used 4 small dots of it to reseal. Ambient room temp is about 20C.

That's really hot man. I dunno. Are your radiator fans oriented in a good way?

For reference, I am in 23c ambient temp and right now with a couple back to back R20 runs i max out at 80 on a Cryorig H7 Quad Lumi, which is a very modest air tower cooler. This is in an NZXT S340 with 5ghz @ 1.355v.

Been playing Division 2 for an hour now, and average CPU temp is like 65 at around 40-50% utilization.

I just redid the liquid metal and this time went with the free floating method as my PC isn't going to leave my desk, hitting a max of 79C at 5.2ghz with 1.37V. Seems stable with Aida64, going to let it burn for half an hour and see what happens. I think it was the silicon I used to seal it, I used barely any but that must have pushed the die every so slightly away from the IHS and caused issues. Sitting in the mid 60's with random mid 70's spikes at 100% load, I think this is it guys. Don't reseal your CPU if you don't have to.

yep half the delid benefit is bringing the IHS closer to the die.

I also didnt reseal the IHS when I delidded LM my 8700K, I leave it to the stock CPU retention tool on the motherboard to hold the IHS, and it just works. Temps are amazing under 30C ambient temps 5GHz 1.34v averaging 77C and spikes up to 83C under few hours stress test with air cooler.

Running 1.41v and 5.1ghz with no offset atm, temps stay right at or under 90 with 2 hours on Aida64. If I had a better mobo could probably hit 5.2/5.3 stable but I'm happy as hell rn. Streaming/gaming is right around 75C constant
