mixing sticks

Could I have 2 8gb sticks and then 2 4gb sticks? I thought I was putting in 16gb of RAM but in reality I accidentally put 24gb of ram in. Its detecting all the ram in windows. Is that bad? Its the same speed. Should I not do that or will it work fine? I just put together a pc with old parts. Did not realize that the sticks were not all 4gb

depending on the age of the machine it may not all run in multichannel mode but if they all are detected then its ok
