I am considering converting my old pc into a file server, it had an i5 3570k in it and its running on 4GB of memory. The motherboard if you were wondering is a Gigabyte z77 ud5h and wont be able to do the kind of raid array i was hoping. I want to know my options for raid cards and hard drives for a 6 drive raid array.

My System Specs: (Short list) i7 4770k, GTX 780, many SSD's, a 2 TB HDD(deceased :( ), Corsair 650D. Full list: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/kchriz6097/saved/8dh7YJ

Upgrade Plan: Acquire some Black Noctuas then add 16 or 32GB of 2133MHz memory

I am considering converting my old pc into a file server. I can fit up to 6 drives in it and want to know the cheapest solution, but a bad way to get a raid array.

Don't get a raid card for home use, it's a waste of money. Use Linux and mdadm or ZFS (but really, use ZFS), they are both capable of raid 6.

As for drives, grab some WD reds or seagate NAS drives.

Workstation: 3930k @ 4.3GHz under an H100 - 4x8GB ram - infiniband HCA  - xonar essence stx - gtx 680 - sabretooth x79 - corsair C70 Server: i7 3770k (don't ask) - lsi-9260-4i used as an HBA - 6x3TB WD red (raidz2) - crucia m4's (60gb (ZIL, L2ARC), 120gb (OS)) - 4X8GB ram - infiniband HCA - define mini  Goodies: Røde podcaster w/ boom & shock mount - 3x1080p ips panels (NEC monitors for life) - k90 - g9x - sp2500's - HD598's - kvm switch

You dont really need reds since thats software raid.

You don't need their TLER capabilities, sure. But they're quiet, low power, good quality, and resistant to vibration. All good qualities for a home server/NAS drive.
