I am looking to get a new GPU. Right now I have a 600W power supply, an i5 3570, a Samsung SyncMaster 2223NW monitor (1680x1050 resolution) and 8GB of RAM. My GPU is pretty bad right now so I really need a new one. My budget is up to £150. Would this be a good choice?

  • That monitor isn't quite 1080p, so you're looking at 720p gaming (or the 900 variant could be available.) Are you intending to upgrade the monitor any time soon, or are you happy on that resolution? (I honestly have nothing against 720p gaming personally. Still looks nice.)
  • What titles are you playing / wanting to play?

Upgrading to 1080p or 1440p soon.

Mainly play simulators but want it to last for a few years at least.

Whoops, you beat me to it.

It's super hard to say what the market is like out there, as someone in the U.S.

I  have the powercolor RX 580 8gb, and I play new titles at 1080p on high or higher settings. If I recall, it's like a 15% improvement over the 570, which is to say that the 570 is a pretty dang good card for the price point.

That said, if you're in the used market, there are a lot of good options you could be looking at. Are you buying new?

Defiantly grab a 8GB card then :)

The 8GB RAM should provide some longevity and give room for hardware improvements for years to come (is my hope as well, having a very similar card lol). Games have richer and richer textures, and more of them as time goes on, and this is heavily what the RAM on your card is used for.

It definitely should! Especially with mostly simulator titles.

If I were to be in the market with the same situation I was in when I bought my card, I might be looking into used GTX 980Ti's, GTX 1060 6GB's, etc. But that said, I am also happy with the card I have.

Also out of curiosity, what GPU are you currently running that's "pretty bad?"

Yes, I want to buy brand new.

Newegg UK has a couple of deals I'd like to bring your attention to, quickly though. It doesn't show shipping costs for me, but:

https://www.newegg.com/global/uk-en/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137256&ignorebbr=1

£21 savings on that model

https://www.newegg.com/global/uk-en/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814930002&ignorebbr=1 (I'd go with this one! OC Edition!)

https://www.newegg.com/global/uk-en/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202278&ignorebbr=1

https://www.newegg.com/global/uk-en/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137244&ignorebbr=1

A few RX 580's for about the same price point you're looking at!

Ah, this will be... A MASSIVE step up. You've been waiting a long time for this!

Don't shy away from the links. That second one is an RX 580 OC Edition 8GB for £5 less than your posted GPU. That's at least a 15-20% performance increase.

Would there be a bottleneck though?

With the 3570? I mean there could be a little, but it shouldn't matter.

You want this thing for years, right? Are you planning to upgrade your CPU in those years at all? (Seeing how that's a pretty old gen model?)

MAYBE (and I'm not saying there is) you're a tad bottlenecked until the CPU is upgraded.

Linus has a great video about not fearing a bottleneck. Worst case, you're just not quite recognizing the full GPU performance, but you're getting the best your CPU can provide.

LTT answers this as well:

I was looking at some charts on the newer super high end GPU's and frankly, even the new flash CPU's bottleneck to some degree on them.

The cost including the VAT is £174 so I would be paying £24 more than my budget but it might be worth it.

Seriously, dude. Mow an extra lawn, eat more ramen and less eating out or whatever for a while to make up the £24. That's a small amount now for a large increase over time!

Yep, I think I will go with that RX 580 you recommended, cheers for the help! ?

In some CPU intensive games yes (you could also take this as a unoptimized games, i'm looking at you AC Odyssey), but not that severe, mostly you will be fine. RX570/580 are really fine cards for 1080p and even 2560x1080 (this is ultra wide 1080p practically), but for 1440p if its an upgrade intended for many years i would try to stretch towards an 1660TI/1070/RTX2060 whichever is cheaper.

Also sound advice. I personally don't intend to step up to 1440p in the forseeable future (I used 720 for a long ass time until my monitor just crapped out, and was fine with it. I'm now on 1080p.) So I rarely think in terms of resolution upgrade as an upgrade path. If OP does intend to: I agree with this! (I don't think the 580 would do poorly on 1440 by any means, but it would certainly start to taper off. Settings would start to have to be sacrificed for good performance.)
