Hi Guys,

New Linus fan over here, and I'm just learning so much about computers! I'm going to build a PC in a couple of months, and I just want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing with my money and I'm not causing any problems. I would really appreciate your help in this!

My budget is around $1200, but it can go up and down depending on if it's worth it. I live in Canada, so everything is in CAD.

I want to use the system for gaming. The games range from League of Legends to games like cyberpunk 2077 (AAA, high graphics, super excited for this one). I don't need peripherals, and I'm planning on using my TV as a monitor.

I am upgrading because I want a PC that can handle the latest games as well as infrequent and light video editing. I don't know anything about overclocking so I am leaving that out as a concern (but as I learn more I would like to explore it). I know my current build isn't great for temperature with the stock CPU cooler (so I've heard, anyway.)

I looked at the Build Guide Recommendations Thread and chose the $1100 CAD guide as a starting point. I didn't like the case, so I upgraded it. I also changed the MOBO to include WIFI and Bluetooth. Here's the list from PC Partpicker:

CPU   $224.00       $224.00 Canada Computers Buy
Motherboard   $184.99       $184.99 Memory Express Buy
Memory   $58.99       $58.99 Newegg Canada Buy
    $58.99       $58.99 Newegg Canada Buy
Storage   $87.99       $87.99 Mike's Computer Shop Buy
Video Card   $469.99       $469.99 Mike's Computer Shop Buy
Case   $120.10       $120.10 Vuugo Buy
Power Supply   $69.99       $69.99 Memory Express Buy

Total:

$1275.04

Thanks so much for all your help. I'm taking a giant leap of faith on the PCpartpicker BB Markup, so I hope everything looks alright! If not, I will go through and make it not disgusting to look at. Edit: it looked disgusting. Any help on how to format it would be so appreciated! Apologize for my first time posting errors.

Cheers,

erthwormsam

Cyber Punk 2077 hasn't been released yet (to my knowledge at least). However, the E3 Demo System they were using had the following specs: i7 8700k, 32GB DDR4 @ 3000MHz, GTX 1080ti. You won't be able to hit those specs on a $1200CAD budget.

Also, inb4 someone rips me a new one for opting a GTX 1070 over an RTX2060.

GTX 1070 Variant:

RTX 2060 Variant:

Couple things to note here. I've chosen to use a cheaper SSD, as you'll hardly notice the difference between the MX500 and the A400 (It's comparing 1s to .75 seconds. You won't notice unless you're timing it in slow motion). They're both decent for booting Windows and loading some games. Note my use of a high quality PSU. EVGA (and SeaSonic) have amazing support systems for faulty PSU's if one were to occur. They're also rated 100W above yours, and are Gold+, not Bronze+. It's also fully modular, as opposed to semi-modular. Video Editing (even at 1080p) can take a lot of storage space. Trying to play games, record, edit and render to a single drive, a 500GB SSD is not a great idea. 2TB Drive added for games you don't play often, and a place to record/archive videos too. The motherboard is also based on the X470 chipset. Might be overkill. Also has integrated WiFi/Bluetooth and SLI/XFire support if you want to go down that road at some point.

Edit: You haven't specified any additional requirements (RGB, Color Scheme etc). Therefore, I haven't included any of that. All prices listed are CAD.

If you say in a few month I would say just wait for 3rd Gen ryzen. They are expected to launch july/19.

Ram and ssd pricing seems to be changing a lot lately so there is no point about recommending you something when you are going to buy a few month from now.

And I would get the 2060 over a 1070 100% of the time. It is just the better and newer card. If you want 1070 like performance get a 1660 ti

Thanks so much for getting back to me! I didn't know about the difference of the SSD's. I'll look into that, as well as SLI and the PSU stuff (my least knowledgable area). I apologize that I didn't mention it, but I would love RGB, especially on the case. This is why I chose the h500.

When it comes to gaming, I don't expect to have next gen graphics on ultra, but I would like to play them at 60 fps with medium-high settings. I'm hoping this build will accomplish that.

I'm guessing that your TV is 1920x1080 ("1080p" @ 60Hz)? Game debate is saying that the Predicted System Requirements will be a Ryzen 5 1600, 16GB RAM and a GTX 1070. I'll post back in a few hours, with an updated list to reflect RGB. I'm about to head to class followed by my Info Sec lab.

I really can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. Yes, my tv is 1080p and it says "50/60Hz". I should be more than fine with the RTX 2060 right?

I've also looked into SLI, and I don't think I'll be doing that any time soon. If I could get a different board with RGB instead, that would be awesome. I: haven't found much luck in finding that with a similar price point, but maybe you know what to look for better than I. I picked up the PSU and the motherboard today, but I might return the MOBO if I find something better (sale ends tomorrow and I can always return in the next two weeks).

Gaming on a TV usually sucks. High input lag, pixels response time, tearing and some other stuff usually ruin the gaming experience.

Yeah you're not wrong, but I'm used to it by now and I'd rather a better computer than a monitor + office chair. I can't afford everything in one go, and the new PC is the priority right now. Also, I'm going to look into the 3rd gen ryzen. I wanted to have this build finished by may, so I was going to start buying parts pretty soon (next week or so). I didn't make that clear, sorry!
