Hello,

Since at the moment we only have 1 desktop in our house and my brother wants to play fortnite every day, I need a second PC, and a laptop would be great. But the thing is I'm trying to improve my ergonomics so I would like a setup where I can use external peripherals when I'm at my desk. So Thunderbolt 3 is a requirement, and it'd be great if you guys could also recommend some docks.

The uses for the laptop would be:

Casual gaming, nothing mega competitive so a high refresh screen isn't at the top of my list. Favorite games include: Forza Horizon 4,DiRT 4, X-Plane 11, rarely GTA V.

Photo editing, nothing serious or professional but it'd be very nice if I could edit pictures on the go. So a nice accurate display is required.

Writing, as in documents and school stuff, so the keyboard is pretty important.

And of course media consumption and all the other normal laptop uses.

The size should be around 15", since 17" is a little too much to comfortably carry around.

Battery life is also a priority.

Aaaand it must have a SSD. Or at least a free spot.

As far as what I've looked at already, I'd love a Dell XPS 15, but from what I understand I can get better performance for cheaper if I sacrifice on size. Idk tho, which is why I'm asking.

I hope I didn't forget anything important, and thanks in advance.

I would look at the Gigabyte Aero 15x or the MSI GS65 if you want more gaming power (you could get away with out an external dock which is expensive).  Otherwise I would go with the XPS 15. its a solid laptop with a good display. Apparently there are small issues with thermals that you can fix if you really want to game on it. However, if you are using an external gpu enclosure for gaming that shouldn't be an issue.

I think you misunderstood me... I don't want a gpu dock for gaming. What I do want is pretty much a "dongle", where I'd keep my external monitor, keyboard etc connected, and then I'd just need to plug 1 USB C cable and it'd all be connected to the laptop. Gaming isn't the most important thing, it's more so on the 2. Slot. The thing with the XPS is the cheapest new model I can find is about 1500€, and while I can get that, I'd rather get something a bit cheaper so I can get a good Monitor etc.

My bad, I would look at the Dell G series laptops then. They are Dell's price to performance options. The G7 starts with a 1050ti and a 1080p 300 nits IPS display.

I took a quick look at them and they look very promising! I'll take a deeper look later. Thanks!

With 1060 GPU:

Dell G5 5587 - OKish keyboard, low sRGB IPS

One Gaming K56-7K / Hellfire 8 (Clevo N950TP6 / N957TP6) - not sure about display quality, no TB3, no OS

PCZentrum Vyper (TongFang GJ5CN6E) - low sRGB IPS, no TB3, short battery life, no OS

Unfortunately you have to sacrifice on some aspects. Would you mind increasing your budget further? (if yes, give an absolute max budget)

Thanks for the reply! Absolute max budget is 1500€. If it's really really really worth it i might go up to 1700€. Right now I'm pretty much set on getting a G5 5590 for 1400€ ( https://www.dell.com/de-de/shop/game/dell-g5-15-gaming-laptop/spd/g-series-15-5590-laptop/cng5503 ). Later I'll get complete external peripherals, including a better display. I'll probably be getting whatever I get about 2 months later, so there's still time.

If that's the case, I will help you to find the best options when you decide to make the purchase. No use finding the best options now since prices will change over time and there might be new models coming in. Just remember to tag me
