I'm looking to switch to an AMD R7 2700X for streaming purposes. I'm coming from my first build being an Intel I5 76k, it just isn't powerful enough and I need to upgrade my MOBO anyways if I want to do a CPU upgrade.
What would be a good option for a Motherboard for my use case? I don't need the best money can buy, but I don't like to be under-upgraded if you get me. I bought a Z170 board for a Kaby lake Chip on first build... that was a mistake I wont do again.
Preferences are fairly limited;

  1. Budget: $300ish, also not in a rush to get it, sales are awesome.
  2. ATX form factor. currently using a NZXT H440 case. throw cooler suggestions at me if you wish, I doubt my Hyper 212 EVO will be enough in the long run.
  3. I have 3200 RAM, (8x2=16gb currently, may add 2 more sticks to 32 later on) I've heard that getting RAM to run at the proper hz on AMD boards has been difficult, based on previous forum browsing (unless this is fixed by updates, I'm a bit of a n00b with AMD so bear with me)
  4.  RGB is preferential, but not necessary. I like black and white primary, with blue / purple color schemes, so yes I'm avoiding the typical red lighting that MOBOS come with. i'm not that edgy.
  5. x4 SATA ports minimum, as I have 2 SSD and 2 HDD, and may need more slots soon enough. (I have a lot of games)
  6. Thunderbolt 3 would be nice, but not necessary I guess
  7. x7+ USB ports would be great, but I can deal with less by using the outputs on my monitors

Thanks a million, LTT forum!

So I'm clear, you have $300 for CPU/Mobo combo, or just for the mobo?

Just the MOBO, lol i cant get a 2700x for less than 300 unless there's a sale i'm not aware of and it's like $50 lmao.

https://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.aspx?Ntt=2700x

There are some $319 bundles if you have a Microcenter near you.  Also, you don't need the 212 EVO or any other cooler, the 2700x comes with the Wraith cooler which is good.

But if you just need a motherboard, $300 is like saying you have $500k for a car.  :)   You can buy almost any motherboard with that budget, outside of the real crazy stuff.

As for USB slots, you can always get a hub, so don't look at that for the motherboard limitation.

I'm looking for a solid motherboard that's stable and wont give me tons of issues. i've enjoyed that from my current rig. I'm not big on OCing, but it's not out of the question.

I do in fact have a microcenter close by.

Totally understand.  I would forego the $319 bundles, but wasn't sure if you had $300 for CPU and mobo together.

So, the 2700x is $239.99 at MC with bundle savings... but I'd probably go with that ASRock Taichi bundle for $429.98 as I hear it's a solid board.

I'm sure others will chime in with other options too.

I have seen the Taichi being highly recommended with B450 boards from Asus and ASrock coming in next. thanks for the input!
