Hello,

Currently, I have 2 750GB hard drives in RAID 0. Will I notice a big improvement in performance if I get a SATA SSD (preferably 240GB)?

If yes:

I have only 2 6Gb/s ports on my motherboard, others are 3GB/s. Currently, my 2 HDDs are connected to 6Gb/s ports. How would I connect existing HDDs and SSD without losing performance?

Thanks, regards.

Will you notice a performance bump over raid 0 HDDs - Yes. A noticeable one.
WIll your HDDs suffer a performance loos in SATA 3GB/s over SATA 6GB/s? - No. Hard Drives cannot saturate even sata 3GB/s.

There is a huge problem, though. There is a good chance those 6 GB ports do not run through a chipset, but through a dedicated SATA controller, if the mobo is old. You may loose raid if you reconnect them in other ports. Or even if it is a chipset raid you may still lose it if you reconnect them in other ports. Huge warning there.

Yes, you will. One SSD will always beat the pants off two HDDs even in a raid 0.

Great, thanks.

If I reconnect them and RAID is lost, will RAID work if I reformat the drives and configure them again?

If you reconfigure it again - yes.

Okay.

Any chance you may know what will happen with my exact (old) board: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/50101/intel-desktop-board-dh67cl.html

I will get an SSD anyway, but I wouldn't like to reinstall 16 games...

Regards.

  • 1 month later...

SSD (finally) arrived, thanks eBay... After backuping all my data and believing I will lose it, I changed the hard drive ports and connected SSD to the 6Gb one. I turned on my PC and Windows loaded from the old HDD - RAID was still working! Then I just installed Windows on my SSD and deleted the HDD one.

Thanks once more for all help.

Regards.
