NVMe SSD Sequential Read/Write Regression

Hi all,

 

I recently purchased a Samsung 970 Pro 512 GB NVMe SSD, upgrading from a Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SATA SSD. When running benchmarks using Samsung Magician the 970 Pro had substantially slower sequential read/write speeds.

 

Is this performance typical? Did I miss something in setup? Where could I begin troubleshooting?

 

I did some searching of this forum and online but wasn't able to find a similar comparison or issue.

It's not always accurate, I have found.  

 

The 970 numbers are in line with spec, the 840 is wrong.  It can't get those, the interface doesn't support those speeds.

Did you have the RAPID mode enabled? That uses RAM as a buffer/cache, which would explain the higher speeds.

Yeah, you may have RAPID on, totally forgot about that as well. Just reran my 750 EVO with RAPID on...

The 840 Pro has RAPID mode enabled, RAPID mode is unsupported for the 970 Pro. After some more reading, it does appear that this may explain the difference. I'm a little confused as to why that would be unavailable on the latest models or interface (even if it's arguable if there is a real-world experience difference).

 

Thanks for everyone so quickly sharing their insights, it's reassuring to know something isn't necessarily wrong with the hardware or configuration.
