IHi,

I currently have a (horrible) laptop that I would like to upgrade.

I am very new to PC building, and I have never built a PC before. The only experience I have is watching LinusTechTips videos.

I thought I would upgrade to a desktop (for many good reasons), and so I began to look at some other builds and pick out some parts.

The problem was, everything was either too expensive or had old parts that I couldn't find.

Details:

I don't exactly have a budget for this build, so I'll just say $500-$600 (USD) should be fine, but as I said, that could be impossible.

I am planning to use this build for video editing, web browsing, and gaming as well.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Sorry I didn't mention this! I already have a 128GB SSD for my boot drive already loaded with Windows 10.

You do have a good point for switching to 8GB of RAM, since that leaves more budget for upgrading to the 4GB 1050 Ti version.

I also switched the case to a similar-vibing case, but for less $$$ (I didn't realize how expensive the other case was!).

Thanks to anyone who helps!

You may want to look into a 7200rpm hard drive for storage.  You should be able to get a WD blue or similar in 7200rpm for a few dollars more.  And as far as the video card, for the price a Radeon RX 570 is a better card and will likely give you better frame rates in more games but the GTX 1050ti can be a very decent card for budget gaming.

Another option would be to use the APU graphics of the 2200g and slum through games for a bit while saving up money for a 1070 or similar.  Depends on what your goals are. The 450 chipset should be good for you and should be a great upgrade path for when zen 3 processors come out. The power supply may also be a weak point in the system down the road if you plan on getting a more demanding processor or GPU.  Once again, it depends on your goals.  Even if you went up to a 550w PSU you would have power to spare for a more power thirsty GPU and CPU down the road.  Best of luck with your build though!

Thanks for the assurance! :)

I made the decision to scrap the graphics card (for now) to keep the budget down, because I looked at some benchmarks, and my tasks would (in theory) work just fine with the Vega graphics on the 2200G, while I wait to see what happens, and if I should upgrade.

Since that left me with more budget, I switched to 16GB of RAM, because that is my biggest problem with my current system (only having 8GB), and everybody knows Ryzens LOVE their RAM. ;)

I also upped the PSU to 500W, even though this current build sips power at under 100W under full load (estimate), but that decision is mostly for upgrade purposes.

I decided to switch to an M.2 SSD (500GB) instead of that SSHD, because I think it will be better off for me in the future, and also currently.

Keep this in mind: This is just a starter build, and my main 2 points are budget (I know, totally rich, right?), and future in mind. I want to have to upgrade as least as possible, and I think this build will do just that. Also keep in mind the specs of my current system:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU M 620 @ 2.67GHz

128GB SanDisk SSD

8GB RAM

???

Thanks for the help!
