updating old tablets

hi, i have an old smsng tablet, what are some ways i can update it or refreshen it to put it to ok use again. would the another android os run smoother?

Depends on how old, if there are no further software updates (Which is very plausible) for that device you might have to either put a custom ROM on.

 

You could always hold the volume buttons while turning on the device to boot in the Android "recovery mode" if you will, where you can factory reset/clean the entire device rather than going through software.
