Any of you ever used an online poster printing service? If so, which one(s), and how did your poster turn out? Did you get a matte, or glossy poster? Which would you prefer, matte or glossy? I am looking at PosterBurner.com for possibly getting a poster made of one of my pictures.

Thanks for any help.

Considered looking into local print shops?

They might be a few dollars more but you'll have closer interaction with the people printing, probably have more customization and variation of your prints and be supporting local small business at the same time

I use Loxley Colour on a very regular basis (semi-monthly) and have nothing but praise to give to their products.

That being said: printing is far more dependent on the work you do on your end, than the individual printer or print shop.

A checklist to run through before you click Buy:

  1. Are your photos the correct size and resolution for the end product you want to achieve?
  2. Do you have the original full-size files to hand over, as compared to a compressed .jpg saved at less than 100% quality?
  3. Has your file been mastered on a calibrated, accurate monitor for the medium you intend to have your image printed to? A reputable print shop will give the ICC profiles for the media they have on offer.
  4. Is the file's embedded colour profile the correct one? This is especially important to check if you've already converted the image to sRGB or another colour space.

As for the original question of matte or glossy, the choice is simply preference. Keep in mind available light in your intended display location, and how the colors might be affected by the finish. As a baseline, glossy tends to emphasize color. Matte tends to emphasize the texture.
