Which cable do I need?

I have a Ryzen 5 1600, RX 580.

 

i want to run my games at 1080p 144hz, do I need a DisplayPort or hdmi cable?

 

yes my monitor is 144hz

Depends on what inputs your monitor has and what outputs your GPU has. Can you provide a picture

For best result go with displayport. But it doesn't really matter.

You can use DisplayPort for 144 Hz. HDMI may also be capable of 144 Hz, but that depends on the specific monitor.
