Plugged a mobile M.2 network card out of a dell inspiron into my desktop and smoke started billowing out of the port? I don't think I've damaged the port but I'm assuming I fried the network card, anyone have any ideas as to why this may have happened? I'm more curious than concerned

Probably not meant for anything but a low power slot and got overvolted or fried due to dust or w/e

In that case I'm assuming it probably wouldn't have caused any damage to the slot, just the card?

Both are possible. The only way to know would be to properly test the slot.
