970 or 1060

Kristiaan

Hey guys,

I am wondering what would be the best buy.

A MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB or a MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GB.

Thanks

Depends on what MSI cooler you're talking about. In my opinion, don't bother with the unimpressive MSI cooler designs, I know that PNY and EVGA coolers are all over the market for these cards at the cheap levels, and they're not unnecessarily heavy. The 970 is not as capable as a 1060 6GB, it's closer to a 3GB, so I recommend the 1060 instead.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

It's hard to answer when you aren't telling what games you want to play or already to play, what CPU you have, and what resolution you play at.

From first glance I would pick the 1060

8086k

aorus pro z390

noctua nh-d15s chromax w black cover

evga 3070 ultra

samsung 128gb, adata swordfish 1tb, wd blue 1tb

seasonic 620w dogballs psu

Depends on the price.

In some benchmarks the 970 beats the 1060 by a few frames. If I had the choice I would get the 1060 given that it is a newer card in general. Are they both used, or is one new?

TBH, i hardly play games.

Sometimes i play RS3, but it's more for like Trading stocks and Forex on multiple screens in the future.

I can get the 970 for 120€ and the 1060 for 150€

I'd go for the 1060. Newer card, more VRAM.

I assume you're getting a used 970? If so, I guess I'd pick it up if I wasn't playing games, but at the same time I would consider getting the 1060 because it's newer and has more vram

I would get the 970. Save some money and it really is very close in performance. Since gaming is not a huge priority it should do fine. This is coming from a guy who still runs a 970 in my main PC. Great card overall. Hope this helps.

Here in Belgium both of those are like €200+ ;)

Ahh, I didn't localize the shipping, indeed.

I understand.  At least over here in the states the older R9's are the way to go.   In your shoes, I'd take the 1060 over the 970, mostly because of age and more VRAM.

Guys, i just got a message from a guy, he is selling a Asus STRIX RX480 4G for €70.

How do you guys feel about that VS the 970 or the 1060?

I'd certainly be a little cautious as the 970 is getting on a bit now and if the previous owner were heavily overclocking it, you never know how long it will last.

Getting a used card for longevity seems an oxymoron for this reason.

A quick Google suggests the 970 is 50-115% FASTER than the RX460.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

Meh at those prices I'd just get the 1060. 30 euro's is jack all when you're spending that much already.
