I'm building a new PC to replace my 2011 Mac Book Pro. (yeah, it's time) Here is my parts list (see below)

1. Budget and location:

2500 USD America. (UT)

2. Aim:

4K rendering with Davinci Resolve & Blender.

3. Monitors:

 I already have a 1080p monitor. But I'll Probably upgrade to 4k + 1080p monitors.

4. Peripherals:

Shoot. I think we have a keyboard around here somewhere. And I have a mouse and Headphones.

5. Why are you upgrading?

Macbook Pro 2011.

Hello, great Config by the way. If i would change anything i'd would buy a regular 1TB hard driver and try getting a 1TB SSD, but honestly i'd be confortable using a 500GB SSD + 2TB HD.

Change the cooler. The Kraken will fit on the threadripper, but the CPU is so fricking big that the block won't cover the whole CPU. There are coolers that are designed to cover the whole CPU.

Noctua, be quiet, cooler master, and deepcool all make air coolers for threadripper

enermax makes a water cooler for threadripper

8086k

aorus pro z390

noctua nh-d15s chromax w black cover

evga 3070 ultra

samsung 128gb, adata swordfish 1tb, wd blue 1tb

seasonic 620w dogballs psu

Thanks, that helps a lot! I'm going with the enermax.

Maybe wait a few hours for the AMD keynote. Rumors are, it could be game changing (But than again, rumors are rumors).

The rumored Ryzen 9:

  • Ryzen 9 3850X: 16-cores, 32-threads, clocked at 4.3GHz to 5.1GHz @499 $
  • Ryzen 9 3800X: 16-cores, 32-threads, clocked at 3.9GHz to 4.7GHz @449 $

If you haven't heard, AMD might announce ryzen 3000 tomorrow so wait that out. If you need a PC now, then this is a good choice and you'll be fine.

Now that I'm looking over the list, you might want to try and get one of those windows keys off of eBay. $124 is a steep price for windows...

Well, this build isn't scheduled until Mar or Apr... I should have mentioned that. So I'll wait with bated breath.

Yeah, we might even be able to take that off the budget and assign it to an office expense.

The threadripper 2 stuff might be cheaper by then, too so keep that in mind.

If the rumors a true you will get better performance with a cheaper motherboard on a more reasonable sized CPU (cooler)

That would be awesome! This is my first build, so I'm excited to start with the big toys.

It would be better to use a 4x8GB kit instead of an 8x4GB one. This would leave four slots available should a memory upgrade every prove necessary. Corsair - Vengeance LPX 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 is on the motherboard QVL.

Good catch, thanks! But what about bandwidth, would I really notice a difference by only using half the slots?

Your bandwidth is depending on your max memory frequency and if it is in dual channel or quad channel [only high end or server hardware], you don't get a benefit in populating all slots as far as i know.
The benefit in only using half the slots is, that you can upgrade it down the line if you need to double your memory because your demand has changed

The memory controller has four channels.

Threadripper does have some interesting behavior with respect to memory and there is a setting that can affect performance depending on use case. You may want to do some research into this to see how it might affect your usage.
