wordpress - making adjacent toggle display

Figured this out earlier, the problem was simple, youi dont put javascript into funtions.php...

Hi there, I'm  using underscores _s bare bones theme, and was wondering how I can get a div to toggle the display value of two other divs, at the moment I cant even insert custom javascript or jquery into the functions.php without a syntax error coming up, even basic generic code snippets.
