So I have this old pc that I was trying to get working. I noted that for some reason ram slot #4 kinda works kinda don't and the pci-e slot doesn't work at all. It just supplies power and doesn't accept data. This pc has a dual core athlon at 2ish ghz and also when I try to install windows on a known working hard drive it just reboots and I want to know if any of you all know how to fix this. I'd rather show off a 1060 6gb dual core system rather than a pentium 4 540 1 core system with a 1060 6gb.

The first thing to try is hard reset the BIOS. If that doesn't work, find the updated ROM and flash the new BIOS.

What motherboard do you have?

I'm amazed that thing even works at all, Acer's a piece of $H1T! Aaaaand of course it's 2nd gen technology... Definitely update the BIOS.

actually hp but yeah ill try a bios update. wait. Can you update the bios by using a cd? I dont have a usb stick and my phone does weird shit to any pc of mines usb ports.

It's absolutely possible. But since technologies have changed you'll need a bit of expertise in creating a boot disc loaded with the right files. As long as you do that and flash the BIOS with the newest image it should help.

Also, try replacing the RAM entirely.

And if you have an extra CPU laying around that would work, try that too. Otherwise just reseat it (take it out and put it back in) then make sure your heatsink is securely in place.

Don't forget to clean off any dust on the board by vaccuuming-- DO NOT BLOW AIR!!!

Wait............ I know the board has no cmos battery. Would THAT really cause these issues?

It's likely only part of it if your PCIe slots have issues. Installing a CMOS battery would be a good starter fix though.

but no extra cpu and the ram that was on that board is currently in this Optiplex GX 280 (throwback eh?)

You're saying you got the RAM from a GX280? I didn't know anyone even had those anymore...

If you got the RAM on your HT2000 from the GX280, that could be another part of the issue; anything from or inside the GX270 and GX280 series is notoriously defective, and I speak from experience on that.
