Dumb question about monitors!

Hey! So ive been looking to buy a 1440p 144hz monitor, I found the ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR 27” has G-SYNC and everything! So current my issue is I have a GTX 1060, so I wont be able to hit 144 fps in most games @ 1440p so could I lower the res to 1080p and STILL get 144hz via Display port?

Yes, also if you want an alternative I recently bought a 27" Samsung curved 1440p 144Hz monitor that only cost £300 which might be worth looking at. Had it a week and so far its been great for me.

Link? Seems interesting,  but im US so a bit of a price difference lol. I really do want a 27inch tho, I have a 27Inch IPS from HP rn which is why id like to keep the same size
