My friend sold me his old pre-build for next to nothing. The memory [2x 4gb DDR3]  and processor [i5-2400s] were good enough for me, so I decided to upgrade the graphics card [AMD Radeon 6450]  (before doing proper compatibility research). Turns out the OEM motherboard is notorious for being unfriendly to GPUs that are less than a few years old. Something about the BIOS that can't be remedied (there's like a million threads across Google). So. I'm out like $150 (an insane amount of money for me), and am stuck with a GeForce 1050 (2gb) collecting dust. I figure I have 3 viable options.

  1. Suck it up. Eat the >$100 loss. Get whatever I can for the 1050 (like, $40), and apply that to an older - but still superior - GPU.
  2. Replace the motherboard. Swapping a GPU was already a solid level-up in my hardware skills. So. Essentially re-building my rig is a bit daunting. Especially when it is my primary form of entertainment and communication.
  3. Start over. This really translates to "give up on PC gaming for the foreseeable future". Stick to my blurry 30fps Overwatch, and games/emulators released before 2012. At least until I have a couple hundred to sink into a proper build.

Looking at the components I have, my next to 0 funds, and my next to 0 skillset; which option is most practical? If I buy a new motherboard, am I going to burn my house down trying to put my rig back together? If I go back a generation or two in GPU, will I still be playing AAA titles in 2021, or will I be throwing money at another graphics card? Am I just up Sh*t's Creek until I get less poor? Mobo and GPU suggestions are also appreciated.

My baseline goal (it will be sad) is to have Overwatch run, with all medium settings, and maintain 30-60fps at 720p 60hz (my TV is sh*t too). Right now, raising literally any FPS-relevant setting above the lowest option will drop my FPS into the single-digit range. So. I have to choose between playability and visibility. Having both is the goal. Fortunately, I'm old, with old-man eyes; 30fps looks buttery smooth to me. It's all about improving clarity. I'd rather play on Ultra with 30fps than on Medium with 60+fps.
