OS Encryption Experience?

I've been looking into operating system encryption for my Win 10 desktop. Anyone tried it? I'm unsure of the potential implications of it and if there would be any potential compatibility or performance issues from such encryption. Would restoring from backups or other operations that take place outside of the OS be hindered? I'm planning on using veracrypt, and I would love any feedback anyone has on their experience, with what program, and anything that could help me know what I'm getting into. Compatibility is a delicate thing nowadays, so I try to be careful about stuff I do in tech without experience or foreknowledge.
