Hey everyone,

I have tried for a long time to access my home network through the build in vpn on my router but I cannot seem to get it to work. Every ip explanation I found on the internet was pretty good but none of them could explain to me what was going on with my network.

What I have found out so far:

- Using 'tracert 8.8.8.8' in cmd from my home network gives the result shown in the tracert8888.PNG screencapture.

    - When I use nmap from my home network on the first jump IP I get the result shown in nmap46[1]FromHome.PNG.

    - When I use nmap from my mobile network (Using my phone as a hotspot) I get the result shown in nmap46[1]FromMobile.PNG.

- When I google "WhatsMyIp" I get a slightly different ip adress from my first tracert jump, only the last digits are different. I will name this ip adress in my screenshots with a small [2].

    - Using nmap from home gives nmap46[2]FromHome.PNG.

    - Using nmap from my mobile network gives nmap46[2]FromMobile.PNG.

- On the RouterTroubleshootingDiagnostic.PNG picure the IPv4 adress is 172.xx.xxx.xx, IPv6 is blank (This is just an image I got from google images because I could not get the Linksys SmartWifi pages in English, but it is the same).

    - When I use nmap on this ip address from my home network it says there are 8 ports open and 992 closed, the result is shown in the nmap172FromHome.PNG screencapture.

    - When I use nmap from my mobile network I get the result shown in nmap172FromMobile.PNG.

When I download my OpenVPN profile, standard over port 1194, and try to reach my home network from my mobile network it get stuck on 'MANAGEMENT: >STATE:1544656134,WAIT,,,,,,' and then gives an error of 'TLS Error: TLS handshake failed'. When I connect to my home network with OpenVPN while on my home network it does work. (This might seem trivial, but just yesterday I could not connect to my home network via a VPN while I was already on my home network)

My goal is to be able to use the drive I have connected to my router when I am away from my home network. As you might have guessed; the FTP server, also standard over port 1994, does not work from my mobile network either. It does work form my home network. I have followed the few instructions on the linksys website but they don't get me very far. The router was reset yesterday so all settings are standard.

Can someone explain to me what is going on with my network and how I might be able to fix it?

Thank you.

Little overwhelming amount of ambiguous information. In summary I assume this all simply means you cannot connect to your VPN from outside your network.

I haven't seen you mention that you created a firewall rule to allow 1194 UDP (by the way, nmap tests TCP by default). I'd also suggest using a website like ShieldsUp (https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2) to test yourt ports externally - but it also is only going to test TCP. The TCP protocol allows status/information about the connection, UDP is more of a stream - so testing it is harder. Without a response, you don't have a way of knowing if your packets got through or not. So to test your VPN you're better off just trying to connect.

It also worries me a little that you have any ports available externally other than 1194 UDP, you want to minimize/reduce this.

I think that you are just trying too hard.

Just potforward port 1194 UDP to your computer hosting the VPN server and test it trying to connect to the VPN, things like Nmap or port testing websites probably won't detect your VPN because it runs on a UDP port and most apps and services test TCP.
