Hello everyone,

I'm a bit new to this forum. I'm an LTT youtube subscriber so I figured this would be a great place to ask!

I'm looking to make some significant upgrades on my current system below and wondering if I there are any other suggestions to the upgrades I'm looking to buy.

Current build:

GPU: AMD Radeon R9 270x
Mobo: ASRock H97 Pro4 ATX

Memory: 8GB off brand from like 9 years ago
PSU: Thermaltake 700w (keeping)
Processor: i5-4590 3.30GHz

Storage: Intel SSD (keeping)

Case: Riotoro CR1080  (keeping)

Budget is around $900

This is loosely built around the CPU I'm getting from a friend which will be the i5-9600k or i7-9700k.

I do plan to buy a 1440p 144hz monitor soon but that will be a separate purchase.

Upgrades:

Stick with i5 8600K if you can. Both have almost same performance and imo 9600K is not worth extra money. Also for a K series processor, you will need an aftermarket CPU cooler.

Thanks! Would it much of a difference if I got the i5-8600k or i7-8600k? Also, would there be any other options for MOBO or Memory that would

be a cheaper alternative but get the same performance?

Look up a z370 MB and for RAM this one will give you better performance for the same cost

As far as 8600K and 8700K is concerned, that depends on what you want to do with your PC. if you are just going to use the PC for gaming, 8600K is more than sufficient.

Awesome, and thank you both! For the Mobo z370 I see several options at different price ranges, any specific one you can recommend?

I myself have the MSI Z370 TOMMAHAWK for my i7 8600K. It works perfectly well and was kind of the bang for the buck mobo for me.
I wouldnt buy from ASRock, also these ones are recommended by some and not recommended by others.

For MSI the TOMAHAWK and GAMING PLUS board are really good quality. used both of them in rogs.

As for the CPU cooler, I do have the Intel one that came with my i5. If that won't do the job do you have any cheap alternatives?

And just to confirm, if I were to buy something like the ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q, this setup shouldn't have any issues with a monitor like that?

This has been a huge help since I feel lost every 5-7 years when I upgrade.

intel stock coolers are only viable on i3's imo. The Cooler master Hyper 212 EVO is the msot popular bang for the buck CPU cooler. Its a rather small cooler but as long as you are not overclocking it will do just fine.

For my own builds I alwasy go overkill on cooling, there cant be enough. The be quiet Dark Rock Pro 4 is my recommendation. but it is more expensive of course.

The Hyper 212 EVO will be noticeably louder tho.

Asrock does one of the best overclocking motherboards you can find. The MSI is a hit or miss...

Now I'm conflicted! Asrock or MSI Gaming Plus. Can I get a third opinion?

Gigabyte or asus, although asus only gets real good at higher prices
