USB 3.1 Motherboard and USB 3.0 case

mealto

So how will things work when using a Z270 MB with USB 3.1 but the case (Fractal R5) only has USB 2.0 and 3.0. Will NCIX paid set up just plug the 3.1 headers into the 3.0 ports on the front of the R5 and these will just be 3.0 USB ports?

The 3.0 (now called USB 3.1 Gen1) will plug in to the USB 3.1 Gen1 headers (previously USB 3.0). The USB 3.1 Gen2 headers are physically different to the 3.1 Gen1/3.0 headers.

EDIT: Technically, USB 3.1 Gen1 is actually an upgrade of USB 3.0, but there's no major changes, so it's basically just superseded 3.0 but is mainly the same thing. No idea why they decided to name it in such a confusing and ultimately misleading way.

So at the end of the day, with aZ270 motherboard and the Fractal R5, I will max out at 5gbps on the 3.0 ports? Therea re 4 ports on the front. 2x2.0 adn 2x3.0. And the 2.0 will max out at 0.5 gbps right?

Yes. Any rear 3.1 Gen2 ports will still run at 10Gbps

It doesn't (assuming you mean 3.1 Gen2 10Gbps). It has 2x USB 2.0 ports and 2x USB 3.1 Gen1 ports (basically 3.0 ports, but it changed name for weird reasons)

I see. So rear USB ports will also max out at 5gbps. Got it. Thanks. I am now assuming USB 3.1 Gen 1 is the same as USB 3.0?
