Hello I'm kinda stupid when it comes to networking and fiber. I'm moving in to a dorm in about a week, and I want to set up wireless internet. There is one RJ45 plug in the wall with (presumably, because the DSL copper network has been permanently shut down in my country) fiber internet. I bought a small D-Link wireless router and plugged it in, but it didn't connect to the internet. I immediately felt stupid, thinking It obviously didn't work because it was just a simple router and not a multimodem combined router and modem. In the instructions manual it also said I needed to plug the router into a separate modem. We used to have a separate modem and router set up at home before DSL was shut down, and now we have wireless broadband over 5G at home through an antenna connected to a wireless router. I just want some clarification because I don't really know what I actually need to get it to work. The internet already works just by plugging a computer directly into the wall, so do I need the modem part if It's fiber? I ordered a TP-LINK ARCHER VR400 Modem Router, but do I really need it, and would it even work since it's designed for DSL? Thanks for any help

I know I don't have much to choose from but anything but satellite internet please!! Right now ive been using mobile host spot and it is super slow!! I don't know if any good wireless networking exists but please give me my options for someone with no cables in America

On my PC I connect to a wifi network. It says connected, internet. And it works for a few minutes. For example, I'm trying to download Forza Street from Microsoft Store. It says downloading, 11 mb/s or whatever for about 30 seconds then the download speed disappears and the progress bar stops. I'm still connected to internet. Pausing and unpausing the download gets it to start again temporarily. I've checked for driver updates for the device (Linksys Dual-Band Wireless A+G PCI Adapter ver 1.1 #2). Thank you. note: ps3 controller for reference pcie mini wireless 802.11g card is broken, had to attache cable to a make-shift bunny ear reciever. Got an effective 9000 less ping than without the reciever! works like a charm! The wire reaches ~4ft tall

Source: Ars Technica, AT&T I'm not from the US but judging from the looks of it, AT&T might be using their higher frequency bands like band 30 to do wireless broadband together with femtocells for improved coverage. Higher frequency bands may have shorter coverage and poor building penetration but they can carry more data than low frequency bands which has good coverage but carries less data. That data cap looks a lot like what my parents are using before but with much lower data cap before I switched them to fiber internet just a few months ago. My country's average internet speed is abysmal at around 3 mbps and I'm just one of the lucky ones who have FTTH (20 down, 20 up) but it probably would have been better if they deployed more fiber optic cables as a backbone and have DSL to extend services because copper is still cheaper than fiber optics. So 160 GB is probably enough for 10 hours of YouTube videos at 1080p and couple Netflix movies at 720p/1080p but not for gaming or constant downloading of games from Steam. Also, you probably should forget being a YouTuber on this wireless internet since the upload speed is terrible at 1 mbps and the data caps are low. A couple 10-20 minutes of daily vlogs in 1080p 30 fps is already at 1.3 to 2.6 GB and not to mention the waiting game because of that upload speed but I don't think the people subscribing to this are vloggers or YouTubers. Some might say this is a good stop gap before deploying nationwide fiber but I think it would've been better if they just deployed massive fiber infrastructures now to future proof America's internet and keep it fast when it's being needed even during peak times. But hey, at least the US entered the top 10 for the first time as countries with fastest internet speeds in the world with South Korea at top 1.

Hi guys. Basically, as a university student, I don't spend that much time at home. But when I do, the WiFi connection here is bloody abysmal. My parents are still on copper wire broadband (despite the fact that fibre optic has been in our area for years) and the WiFi router is still the crappy Sky Broadband one that was supplied when they got the service like 7 years ago. I believe Netgear were the manufacturer partners at the time. I've tried moving the router closer to the centre of the house. I've tried changing the WiFi channels (router's so old it only uses 2.4ghz) to avoid interference from neighbours (rural area, interference has never been an issue) but I still average about -75dB signal strength with it fluctuating severely. This is with the signal travelling through the floor directly up to the bedroom. It's even bad in the room next door with frequent quality drops and poor speeds. This isn't really affected by the number of devices either. During heavy load the family can have 4 phones, 3 tablets, 2 laptops and my desktop all connected to it at once. However, even when home alone with just my phone and my desktop connected, it makes no difference. Just for completion I'm using an i3 6100 on an Asus z170-p. The WiFi card I'm using is a TP-LINK TL-WN851ND. My operating system is Windows 10. However it's important to note that this issue affects all devices in the house, not just my PC. The connection speed itself isn't bad, about 10-15mbs with decent ping. Checking with a wired connection the quality of the connection is fine, so it has to be the WiFi of the router itself. The issue is most obvious when gaming over this connection. I'm always getting good ping numbers, but my character jitters around the place with severe rubber-banding. If this was my house the solution would be simple (get fibre optic and smash some cat6 around the house) but as this is my parent's house i can't just drill holes in walls or change the internet package and provider. I also can't run a 20m cable downstairs to the router from my PC, so I was curious if anyone had any solutions and can answer the following questions:1. Would my signal be improved by buying an aftermarket router?2. What would the approximate cost be for a worthwhile router upgrade? 3. Would I also need a modem if I upgraded? 4. Would a powerline socket solution work well for my described situation?5. How hard would it be to run a Cat6 cable down one wall to the router below? Thanks for any help you can provide! Hi everyone, I recently moved into a new home and wanted to have a capable setup. I decided to splurge and get a good router and modem as I have xfinity (the only real isp in my area). For a modem we got the arris surfboard SB8200, and router we got the netgear AX1800. We have gigabit internet through our isp and while I recognize that we won’t always get gigabit down I did expect more than 300 mbps while right next to the router. When I first got everything connected I only got 90-120 mbps but after changing some setting in the router admin portal I was able to get 350 mbps. This worked for a couple of days then I tried to tinker with everything some more to see if I could get it back but now I’m back to getting 100 mbps even after putting everything back how it was before. So my question is what kind of settings should I be focusing on to change and tweak to get better speeds and what should I not change?

First time poster! I think. LOL I have my internet through a rural electric co-op since that's all I can get right now. Currently, my wireless bridge is on my roof which points to another house's bridge on their garage roof. That person's house is at least a half mile away on a hill. Lately, I have been having issues with packet loss and it's really hurting me since I work-at-home on occasion. After having the electric company come out a couple times, they have been unable to do anything and they suggest I pay someone else to have this fixed. :angry: I want to just do this myself and save some money. After observing things, I have come to the conclusion that the tree line is causing the frequently issues. Luckily, the person's house has a taller roof than his garage, so I could just move the bridge to the roof of the house and be perfectly fine. I have already talked to the person on the hill and they are OK with it being moved as long as it doesn't affect his connection and I don't cause his roof to leak. My question is this... If I disconnect my internet and his, then move his bridge from the garage roof to the house roof, reconnect everything and put power back to it, will I have to do anything else to make sure it works? I don't know what brand or model these bridges are. I do know that they have an ethernet cable that runs from the bridge to an adapter. The adapter then has another cable running to my router, and then an AC adapter that runs to an outlet. I have looked at some Cisco docs but I don't think any of that would apply to this. Any assistance to this would be awesome!

I'm assuming this is the right place, but I see a mix of "Can I run multiple router?" threads and other things about NAS and stuff... I feel so puny in this world. *Ahem*... anyway, I decided that I'm in the market for a Wireless Internet adapter, after I pulled my previous one, a TP-Link TL-WN851ND, as it caused my computer to crash and restart at random, as shown here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/231595-computer-reboots-without-warning-no-bsod/page-2 Wired ethernet is not an option. I know it's the best, but where I am right now I can't do it, and there's nothing much I can do about it. My house is a bit old, so powerline won't do. I have only three parameters: -Needs Win8.1 support. This is why my card kept failing, since it didn't have native support for the OS. This is really my only demand. -PCI slot is preferred, since I have nothing else using that slot at the moment. An audio card would be the next contender, but that's not a necessity. -Budget is up to $40-45. That's how much I spent for my previous card, and am aiming for a refund on that. So far I found a few, how do these look? Hello. I have an old Dell PC that used to use an Ethernet cable with, but now since I have it far away from my route I use the integrated wireless card and its incredibly slow. I used to get 30 mbps internet with the Ethernet cable, but now with the integrated wireless adapter 0.40 mbps. So, I want to buy a separate wireless adapter for it, but I don't know which to buy.

Google will partner with wireless carriers to make Project Loon a reality So it looks like this wasn't just some fantasy Google's actually going to do it. Hopefully with more people in rural places/countries being able to have access to internet those places will finally be able to get better information and build up to not be so rural anymore. There's alot of good that can come from this..................and alot of bad if it gets exploited (looking at you US with your fake social networking sites)
