Hi, I am looking for advice as to whether to buy a tablet or a chromebook for my kids. My budget is £200 and the main uses would be for SeeSaw (app used for their school work. The app isn't available on Chromebooks, but you can access through the website.), and YouTube. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Before I got a new laptop last year I used to use a Toshiba encore write 2 Windows tablet for art. The other day I dug it up and decided it might be nice to have it to sketch on. Unfortunately after booting it up I remembered why I stopped using it. Some art programs, notably paint tool Sai (& Sai 2) have issues with the pen (Sai has no pressure sensitivity, Sai 2 has a really weird lag problem that looks like a you're using a spirograph when you try to do curved lines). After some searching, the biggest solution for these problems was to uninstall/reinstall the pen drivers. Problem is I literally can't find the drivers, Toshiba still has drivers for the tablet but I cant find anything for the pen. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place on their site? If I go ahead and uninstall the drivers will it automatically reinstall some or will I be stuck? Has anyone experienced something like this before? (sorry if this is in the wrong place, wasn't sure if I should put this in programs or tablets)

I am a student and want to get a tablet for taking notes in school. Obviously I want to be able to do things like gaming (emulators primarily) and streaming on the tablet. Which pick between the Samsung s6 lite and the Lenovo tab p11plus, and what are good notetaking apps for the later?

Well guys, the title pretty much states it all on this 1, but still, I would love to hear your thoughts/advice/opinions/experiences etc on this. So, like it says above, I have been thinking of using a tablet to replace a smartphone since i've heard that it IS possible. But I am also rather curious/interested to know if there are any cons or caveats to using a tablet as a phone... If anyone is wondering why I had such a rather bizarre or crazy idea with this, it's mainly because I myself am not a particularly big fan of using phones or tablets with smaller or narrower screens; In fact, I tend to prefer screens that are just wider & easier to use. [I'm sure some of you out there might understand my preference on this.] I should also mention that I am well aware that if I WERE to go this route, it would probably be best to aim for a device that supports cellular activity as well as haveing WiFi capability built-in. Anyway, I guess that pretty much sums it up. Do remember of course, that this post here is intended to be a general discussion on this topic. Hoping to here back from you on this since I'm looking for some insight/advice! Like always, if you happen to have any questions for me or just need more details, please be sure to ask & I'll get back with you! Thanks in advance to any helpful people out there!

Hi All, I'm trying to decide between getting an android tablet or a Chromebook for my mom, whose primary need for the device will be taking online classes, doing her other teaching duties using MS office(primarily word and excel) and entertainment. I wanted to know if anyone has experience using mostly the MS word and Excel apps full time on either Android, or via office web on Chromebook(now that MS has stopped support for the Android apps on the chromebook) i know that the feature gap is big between the full windows desktop apps and the options mentioned above, however, i wanted to compare these two because the budget i have for this device is a little tight, and i know that buying a cheap windows laptop wont help at all with the performance. The price gap between the tablets and the Chromebooks we're looking at in not very different, and i will buy a BT mouse and keyboard if we go for a tablet. Also, anything else to note about the Chromebook experience would be nice! Thank you so much!

tablets Samsung ATIV 500 Smart PC won't turn on.
Knilch posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hello, my Samsung ATIV XE500T1C-A01DE Smart pc will not turn on. After pressing the power button for up to 10 seconds nothing happens, the LED next to it is not lighting up at all. The following components are installed according to the official Samsung Website: Intel® Atom™ Processor Z2760 2GB of DDR2 Memory 64GB of eMMC Storage an Intel® SGX545 Graphics Media Integrated graphics card a Wireless Lan "Card" a 11.6" LCD Display It is running Windows 8 32-Bit The Tablet was purchased around 4-5 years ago, so the warranty already is void. So far I've tried to remove the battery and plug the charger in to start it without any success tho. I have already ordered a battery replacement yet it will take up to 16 days for it to arrive. I believe I can also exclude the charger being faulty since the green light on it is lighting up. Is there any other possible problem that would lead to this? Kind regards Knilch -

Hello everyone, Once again I have to ask you for help on a matter that I am pretty unfamiliar with. Thanks to anyone who will take the time to read my request! I am looking for an Android tablet for a relative. Here are some requirements: Budget 200-300 euros max (preferably around 200), around 250 USD or 320 CAD Must browse fast Must be able to play light games (such as Clash of Clans) Must be 10 inches or more Must have a SIM slot to use 4G internet And here are some optional ones: USB-C charging 5 hours of battery usage I don't know anything about tablets. Normally I would probably have redirected someone like this person (who is not tech-savy) to an Ipad, but they don't want to get a new one (they are currently on a 8 years-old ipad 2 and hate the ecosystem). I also know that I don't want Huawei hardware, I really like the brand but with all the legal issues, it is not very future-proof. Thanks to anyone who would be able to provide a lead, a model name, or even a brand that is worth looking for. I can read the specs of a tablet, but I don't know anything about day-to-day use and actual user experience. Have a great day, Tol

Is Linus ever going to review the new tablets from Samsung? I know there is thousands of reviews already on youtube about it but I would genuinely like to hear his or the team's opinion on the device. I think Samsung finally made something really cool and very appealing with android tablets wich doesn't happen everyday Just wondering tho

I travel alot and my laptop makes my photography gear too heavy to carry for extended periods of time. My shoulders start hurting. I am trying to find a 8 inch tablet with no gps capabilities that can transfer my camera raw files to an external hard drive. A lot of smartphone's usb charging ports only charge the phone and are not capable of transferring files. I am concerned that the small tablets usb port will not function to transfer files from a SD card to a USB hard drive. I am looking for the cheapest solution. WIFI is fine.

A look back at the gadgets and gizmos I've had over the years
Mira Yurizaki posted a blog entry in Yurizaki's Tech Ramblings
I usually try to avoid buying the latest and greatest technological thing that's "in". Like when smart watches were all the rage last year, I avoided them. When the iPad came out, I saw it more as a novelty. I avoided wireless things, since I didn't want to deal with charging them up and such. But all that's changed, since now I've owned these kinds of products (well, except the iPad). So here are my thoughts about the gadgets I've purchased over the years, and whether or not they're still important to me now or not. Since there's a broad range of "gadgets" I can cover, I'm going to limit this to either portable devices or small knick knacks (game systems not included because I'm a gamer so of course I have them :D). 1. Laptop I got my first laptop in 2008, a Dell Inspiron 15 whatever number that was. I purchased it for school since I somehow got a grant in the middle of the semester so 1. I had nothing else to buy for the semester and 2. it's a school grant, why not get a laptop? It was that year I did discover the joy of having a portable computer to lug around winter and summer break. Two years later I passed it on to my dad and replaced it with one from ASUS that I'd say is one of the first "ultrabooks", since it was smaller (13") and lasted a ridiculously long time (12 hours). The next one after that was a Dell XPS 15z, which I thought was a great laptop, but it died two years later. I lulled around for a few months without a laptop since I didn't really need one at the time... until I decided to get a gaming laptop, an ASUS one. At first it was nice to have a gaming computer to take around with me since my desktop at the time was a pretty large beast that was awkward to carry. Then, I decided to sell it and get a Dell XPS 13, which at first I enjoyed, but I really wanted gaming performance and then finally settled down to my current one, a Dell Inspiron 15 7559 (I sold the XPS 13). So after all this, I'm finding that my sweet spot size is 15". The gaming laptop was starting to be come inconveniently large. 13" is too small. And since I'm still a gamer, I want something that has graphical chops to it. It doesn't have to be amazing, but anything's better than Intel's iGPUs. 2. Smartphone My first smartphone was the original Motorola Droid back in 2010. And I still have a smartphone. So I think there's a no brainer about the impact this device had on me. The first feature that smartphones struck out at me that I found useful was Google Maps and navigation. Funnily enough, when I got the Droid, I was about 6 months in my first car too, so it was pretty handy to have that feature. Eventually being able to surf the internet and use apps caught on. The Droid was replaced with an LG Spectrum, then a Motorola Moto X, and now an LG G4. Since I seem to have this Motorola-LG-Motorola-LG pattern (actually, the phone I had before the Droid was an LG phone), chances are my next phone's going to be a Motorola one :3 My usage hasn't really expanded much from how I used smartphones from the start. I don't watch YouTube all that much. I don't stream from internet radios. In fact, I like to not use my phone as much as possible... except if I'm standing around then I'll probably poke on the internet and Skype. However my phone has become my camera, so that's been my biggest desire when looking at phones. I haven't really been worried about the size, but I do like 5" phones. 3. A Camera I did buy a digital camera back in 2011 or so, probably the equivalent of a Canon P&S, but with an optical zoom. It used AA batteries which I thought was a useful feature (I bought rechargables for them). It also didn't get much use. I found my phone more than adequate for the task, even if it took a long time for the quality to catch up. 4. Tablet The first tablet I purchased was an ASUS Transformer Infinity (TF700T) back in 2012. When my XPS 15z kicked the bucket, I started using this as a sort of replacement, but then I soon realized Android has its problems. So slowly it started losing its use and I eventually sold it in 2014. However in that year I decided on another tablet, an ASUS T100, the Windows based tablet. This was during the time I had a gaming laptop, so it was to work as a more portable computer if I wanted it than the laptop. It did see quite a bit of use at first, but it lost its purpose once I got the XPS 13 and I sold it last year. But I wasn't quite ready to toss the hat in for tablets. I purchased one more earlier this year: an NVIDIA Shield K1. And I think this cemented what I like about a tablet. It's 8" is nice to hold and it's still workable. I use it mostly for a watching movies, either from YouTube or what's on my media server. It's actually getting a lot more use than the other tablets I have. 5. Raspberry Pi/STM32L Discovery ("project" boards) I bought a RasPi in 2013 as a curiosity. I tinkered with it for maybe a few days but that was it. I wanted something like a small Linux machine. The most use it got was later that year when I was working as a contractor and the system on a board we were using pooped out. So I brought in the RasPi as a replacement. Not only were we back on track within a day, the fact that it worked as well if not better for $30 instead of the $150 the project board cost saved the thing we were working on. I also bought an STM32L which is a more basic version of RasPi. It's more like a semi-advanced Arduino. It was for a silly project that I wanted to work on that lasted about a month before I got bored of it. Both boards haven't received much love for at least a year. I'm probably going to keep the RasPi but at work and I'm going to toss the STM32L. Project boards like these probably aren't my thing. 6. Smart Watch Well, something smart watch like... I bought a Fitbit Blaze a couple of months ago since I was looking at getting a fitness tracker for a while. Part of me felt like I was going to use it for a month, then go "eh, whatever" and not care about it. Well, I'm still wearing it and one of the things I love about it versus an actual smart watch is it lasts a long time. I clocked in at 5 and a half days before plugging it in, but it didn't actually die, it was just running on fumes. -
Hello, wonderful people of Linus Tech Tips forums! I recently purchased a Nextbook 10.1 from a second-hand shop it was originally a display model from a Walmart. However, the issue I am encountering is due to it being a display model all admin abilities are locked behind an admin account that is password protected!Sadly they did not provide me with the password for said admin account.I do have access to a local account which gives me the abilities to do basic things, however, installing programs is out of the question on this account. So is there any way I can get into the admin account or possibly gain admin rights somehow? Hi, Just lost my wacom pen for my CTH-470k tablet. Just been looking on the internet for the same one and had no luck. I found some great pens like " Wacom Intuos4 grip pen " and wondering if it will work with my tablet. Cheers.

Hi. My sister bought a Yoga Tab 3 a few months back and it was working brilliantly up to recently. One morning she turned it on to find that it was going to the lock screen and then the screen turned black and then to the lock screen again. It was stuck in a loop and when I say screen turned black, I could tell the display was still on and that it wasn't off. I had a look at it and tried rebooting it by powering off and on again as well as hitting the reboot button. I had an old phone that ran android 4.2. When it went bad I held down the power button and volume buttons for about 5 seconds and I could do a hard reboot. Would you guys recommend doing the same on this? Bearing in mind it's still within the warranty period. Any ideas on how to fix this and prevent it from happening in future? TIA

So I was wondering everywhere I look I find third party shield tablets for 300 to 400 new, but I can't find them for 200 dollars like on the Nvidia site. They have been out of stock for a while and I can't find anything useful online. Are they discontinued or just on a temporary hiatus?

Sup folks, I'm looking to buy myself a cheap compact tablet for on the go, say using it whilst traveling. I've found a couple of nice ones but I'd like to hear your thoughts on what you think of my choice and or other suggestions. What are my needs? - It needs to be compact enough for me to be able to take it with me easily - It needs to be good enough for video playback, such as Netflix and YouTube (basic web browsing as well) - It needs to have a good battery life (optional) Currently I've got my eyes on the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0 (2016) What are your thoughts/suggestions? Thanks in advance, Cheers, TJ

Hello everyone, I'm thinking of buying this Tablet for myself. I plan on using it mainly for reading manga, web browsing and social media stalking. I needed the screen to be big and has a lot of space or has and SD card expansion. However as i read through the specs under storage it says "can be upgraded with up to 32GB of micro-SD card for file storage", why cant it only be upgraded up to 32gb? is there anything on this tablet that's stopping me from upgrading it with a 64gb or even a 128gb of micro-SD card?

Hey, me again, can someone suggest to me a laptop that's around $350 (Hopefully much less) that will allow me to download Krita software and the like for digitally drawing with a 13 inch Wacom Cintiq Pro? I would really like one to use in school when I don't have time elsewhere. The only thing that really matters would be a color accurate screen (maybe IPS) ((but even then, the tablet I have has a screen)) and -- most importantly -- enough processing power to keep up with my brush strokes so they don't lag too much behind the pen. Oh, and I should add that I don't want anything related to Apple. As if they could make a $350 laptop anyway lol.

my old tablet recently broke so i am looking into buying a new one and i am wondering if the tablets i am looking at are any good (and if you know a better model for a reasonable price let me know) the 2 models i am looking at are Huawei Mediapad M3 lite 8" https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834324025 and Huawei Mediapad T3 8" https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834324023 i am wondering if they are worth it (is it worth getting the more expensive M3 lite 8" or is the cheaper T3 8" just as good) and i have a question about the model sold on newegg.ca (links above) do they have a MicroSD card slot (this is necessary due to them having only 16gb of internal storage)

Hey guys! I looked for a thread like that but couldn't find it. I was recently looking for some game to play on my Android tablet. I own Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1. I figured there should be a place to make some suggestions and list your favourites. My favourite types of games for tablet were usually simulation ones. But my all time favourite is Badland. Anyone played it? It's awesome!!! Here's Badland trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kQInAlUs7E I'm looking forward to your suggestions!
