I own an old surface pro 3 that i finally got to turn on after four years. I don't mind the cracks but some of the outer edge of the device is broken open and revealing internal components. I would like to cover this with a product to stop people from cutting themselves on the sharp edges (as well as minimize future damage as much as possible.) Are there options for such a case that doesn't cause internal problems, some sort of heat proof putty, cover taping etc.?

Dear LTT community, sorry for beeing new and never taking part There aren't many forums I take part in, maybe just overclocked.net And sometimes the microsoft community forums..... This took me here There is an issue with the surface pro 3 and the latest firmware disabling the wifi&bluetooth adapter. I posted a question there Surface Pro 3 Wireless adapter rarely works after reinstall https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/surface-pro-3-wireless-adapter-rarely-works-after/f89fc5fa-97ee-4199-aced-cbfdcff8c884 And a day later after I was sure it's a firmware issue this discussion Surface Pro 3 change BIOS version https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/surface-pro-3-change-bios-version/27c378a4-1fce-4c7e-a2fe-d5c77f58c886 Now both look like this: Maybe I got banned after trying to post this: I found a fix for the Wifi and Bluetooth issue on my Surface Pro 3 I wrote the text and clicked submit and nothing happend, for a few minutes, then I clicked cancel and tried again...... Nothing, and a third time, again nothing..... and now my other posts are gone too..... It's not like I post a lot there but this is strange, other posts are still available And this is what I was going to post: I see lot of people having the same issue I had and there was no help nor fix. I already posted two questions regarding this issue: Surface Pro 3 Wireless adapter rarely works after reinstall https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/surface-pro-3-wireless-adapter-rarely-works-after/f89fc5fa-97ee-4199-aced-cbfdcff8c884 Surface Pro 3 change BIOS version https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/surface-pro-3-change-bios-version/27c378a4-1fce-4c7e-a2fe-d5c77f58c886 I got this problem after formating and setting up the SP3 After some digging I was pretty sure it was a firmware issue, since there hase been a lot of bad firmwares for the SP3, most of the time there were issues with the battery But I remembered there was an almost identical error back in 2016 and it was a firmware error So I tried to install different drivers but my Wifi adapter was flashing in and out of existence I disabled and enabled it in BIOS and tried a lot of stuff One time I managed it to reinstall another driver from an older pack and I got the best error code ever, code 12 Not enough ressources for this device This also explained the funny boot loop and bsod when booting and beeing connected to a usb hub with serveral devices This might sound stupid and it took me a while to find this but the best way to fix this issue is, to set your UEFI Firmware back to 3.11.2550.0 What is the same version you are probably on, not intuitive I am using the newest driver package SurfacePro3_Win10_16299_1803002_0 On Windows 10 1803 17134.345 *Here is my fix without the story behind* Open the device manager Expand firmware Rightclick Surface Pro UEFI -> Propeties -> Drivers Click "previous driver" (sorry in my german W10 it says "Vorheriger Treiber") should be the button in the middle This starts a setback of the driver after you told ms why you are doing this The strange thing is, it's setting my driver back to the same version, but after a restart the code 12 is gone and the wifi device works again, at least for me : / I hope this helps! Well thanks for reading, I hope I get to people with the same problem this way And maybe I get unbanned from the MS forum, but it doesn't even tell me I am banned....

I am working on a Surface Pro 3 screen replacement for my family, and have removed the busted factory screen/digitizer. They don't know if the Surface is even functional, so I don't want to order a new screen to find out something else is busted. Does anyone know if a functional Surface Pro 3 would boot up and display to an external monitor without its screen connected? My thought was to get a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable and connect it to an external monitor and see if it will even boot before I order a replacement screen...thank you in advance!

Does anyone know if it would be possible to have a ghetto set up using an extra Intel heatsink attached to my Surface Pro 3? I have observed increased performance pointing a fan at the right upper corner (cpu area). I was just wondering how reasonable this would be to do. I have the extra heatsink sitting around so I thought "why not?". I'm not sure how mounting it would work nor how I would power it.

Hello everyone! My spilled some energy drink onto my surface pro 3, all the keys still work fine, but are very sticky. This is a problem because I use this daily, and the sticky keys are very fatiguing. I am thinking about cleaning by simple washing it with a non conductive liquid, but I am having issues coming up with a liquid I could submerge/spray/rinse the keyboard in. Thanks.

Hello, I started college this fall. In high school, I used to take all my notes on paper, but it became a lot more difficult in college because teachers mainly use electronic means to teach. For the first semester I used my laptop, but I find that its an awful way to take notes. So I'm looking at a different way to take note. The best one right now seems to be writing on a tablet with a stylus. I have three options: (all prices are in Canadian dollars and they include taxes and the 10% student discount) (these are all the lowest end models) 1) Buy a surface 3 and the new stylus =750$ (It has the new stylus, but some people say that the screen is inferior to the pro version, not only in terms of resolution, but also in terms of writing with the stylus) 2) Buy a refurbished surface pro 3 and use the old included stylus =850$ (since I will mainly be using it to write with the stylus, I don't now if the old stylus is good enough) 3) Buy the new surface 4 which comes with the new stylus = 1200$ (seems like the best in terms of performance, but that options is incredibly expensive) I will only use the tablet to write on top of power-points, take notes in class and write so random stuff at home. For these usages I only want to use the stylus. I won't even be buying the type cover, because I already have a laptop and a desktop that I can use to write my essays. Money is actually an issue and I would really like to save as much as possible, but if the 4 is really worth it they I can use all the money from my winter grant to buy it. I am more than open to look at any other alternative. I also looked at the HP pro slate, but the overall consensus seems to be that it is overpriced for its specs. Thank you for all your answers.

Yes, I know this is a rather common error and there's a giant reddit thread about this. However I have yet to find someone with the same error code on Windows 10 (Only finding ones with Windows 7 with that code). So here I am making this thread. Onto the problem itself. I'm trying to reinstall a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro on a Surface Pro 3 i3 version. The current 10 was upgraded from 8.1. Now I'm experiencing some issues and would like to reinstall for a fresh install to hopefully solve all the little issues I'm having. The error has popped up with every install I tried. Here's what I have done from the beginning. At first I went to the Recovery page and tried to reset the computer that way. I got "Could not find the recovery environment" error. Moving on. I used the Media Creation Tool x64 from Microsoft to create an installer with a USB stick. The surface I have is the 64gb model so there was no way I could squeeze out 20gb free of the main drive. I then unplugged everything off the Surface (including the keyboard), leaving only the USB stick plugged in, and proceeded with the install. The computer restarted to the installing page, it goes to around 9% before restarting itself and restores the previous version of Windows with the error "0x80070070 - 0x2000c The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during APPLY_IMAGE operation" I have tried deleting $Windows.~WS and the Download folder under SoftwareDistribution. I also tried clicking Keep Settings, and all combination of don't find update option. All to no success. Same error code every time. I could try booting from the USB itself and starting the install there and formatting my PC beforehand, but if the install fails I risk bricking the device so this'll be the last resort. I'll continue researching for a solution but if anyone here knows something I can try, that'll be much appreciated! Thank you!

I've started using a Surface Pro 3 recently. And I've been testing out Microsoft Edge and comparing it against Chrome. One thing I noticed is that Youtube plays very smoothly in Edge while it does drop frames in Chrome. Upon closer inspection I found out when youtubing in Edge, the cpu usage is nearly 0%. Even when watching a 4K video of which Chrome drops frame really badly and cpu usage is high. This leads me to believe Edge is using some sort of hardware decoding within the i3 4020y chip to decode youtube videos. I'd like Chrome to be able to utilize that as well. Anyone knows how? All suggestions are appreciated thanks!

Ever since I have installed the Win10 upgrade on my SP3, Touch gestures such as swiping from the right side of the screen to bring up the action center has disappear after a few update patches have been installed. I’ve already tried to reset the surface with a fresh windows 10 installed, these Touch gestures came back for a day or two but disappears again after update patches installed.

Hey guys! So I have a serious issue with the Surface Pro 3 touch pad. It has two clickable buttons at the bottom for both right click and left click, but the issue is that they are also apart of the touch pad. So when I go to left click it moves my cursor off the thing I'm trying to click. This also means I can only use the mouse pad with on finger.. As having on finger moving the mouse and one finger clicking confuses the damn thing.,. I have read that HP has a Synaptics software that allows you to section of the touch sensitive part of the mouse pad... Although I have yet to find a solution for the SP3.. If you know of anyway to solve this issue please advise! Thanks in advance!! My so-called certain usage is mobile, of course, working with graphics tools such as; Maya, ZBrush, and photoshop. What I do is modeling, texturing, and sometimes painting. I have a pretty solid desktop set up thanks to you ppl of LTT, and now I need a mobile platform to keep working on the go. With Windows 10 and SP4 launching along with it(most popular speculation, but w/e) I've fell into a dilemma, and I need your advice big time. What I've researched so far fit to my needs were SP3, Cintiq Companion2, and some other none tablet laptops. My budget allows me to get a full spec SP3, about 2K, but not full spec CC2 besides how beefy and less mobile CC2 is, but both have some heat issues when running the programs in my needs. Other laptops are nice, but I do need some precision touch pen for drawing/texturing/sculpting(ZBrush). The other reason I was hesitant to this point for this purchase was a hope for SP3 upgrade when SP4 launches, or SP4 itself being better in performance for my needs. Yet, from what I've learned so far SP4 will likely to have all the other better things but slightly less powerful computing power. Could I have your go-sign for this purchase? Speculations or advice from experience are both very grateful. Cheers.

The retailer "Geekdeal" sells quite a bit of stuff on Rakuten & eBay. Today they have a sale on their eBay store on the Surface Pro 3 for only $650. The same unit is $799 at the Microsoft Store right now. Cheapest seen by $25. Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Core i3, 1440p, 64GB + Surface Pen — $649.99 (list $799) Free shipping in the continental US

I need a mouse for my Surface Pro 3 that uses bluetooth only, no usb dongles or wire, preferably a gaming mouse (because they feel nice and i have $ to spend...) Reason is because the SP3 only has one USB port and I use it to connect my dslr to it already

Hi guys, I am a college student and now I need a new laptop to use at the university. I Study computer engineering and so I need something powerful enough, as I have, as well as take notes, use compilers and virtual machines sometimes. I have two candidates, but I do not know which to choose, so I wanted to ask your advice. Which to choose between: 1. Dell XPS 13 2015: i5, 256GB SSD, 8GB Ram and non-touch display 1080p (price € 1099) 2. Surface Pro 3: same configuration. (Price € 1,322 with Type Cover) I really like both, but I do not know whether to sacrifice the touch screen to save € 200. The touch model of the Dell for me is not viable, because i don't find comfortable a regular laptop with a touch screen. In long term(it should be my study machine for the next 4/5 years) wich is the best? Which would you recommend? Thanks in advance P.S. : I've a pretty powerfull desktop at home, so if you have other suggestion or combination

I just found this, thought it was really interesting, the geeky side of me loves it, so I just decided to share it with you guys, hoping it might end up in a productive discussion. How do you feel about x64 Linux on mobile? Would you like to see a "touch optimised distribution", or do you believe Linux should stay an OS for proper desktop / old school laptop use only?

Hi guys. I wanted to uninstall panda internet security with free antivirus trials, because it is just a horrible program, slowing my Surface pro 3 down by alot. Now mid uninstall everything freezes, forcing me to do a hard reboot. not even task manager or charms would work :'( Now everything turned on again but the frigging panda program is still here. When i try to uninstall it through the programs menu a Spanish error message pops up telling me that something went wrong and pointing towards some error log in the temporary data of my pc How do i get this program of mah damn PC?!?!?! PS: Panda bricked my surface already back in spring when they released a bad update, but i thought they have learned from their mistakes so why not try it out again? http://www.zdnet.com/article/panda-antivirus-mistakenly-flags-itself-as-malware-breaks-pcs/

I use a surface pro 3 and have been unable to find a way to disable the sort of "wake on charge" functionality. Basically when plugging or unplugging the ac power the device will (after a few seconds) wake up to display the lock screen. I hate this, but have been unable to find any discussion on this or really even a good term for the function. Thanks. Edit: cyanogenmod calls this "wake on plug".

So, the thing is I'm thinking of buying my mom something that can replace the old laptop and old tablet. The pricing is a bitt harsh on the surface, but it will be so much faster even in the i3 version. The SD card slot is it possible to run programs and use it as a normal drive? But with that in mind i3 64gb and so on, is there anything in the same price rang that is better and / or cheaper and can replace laptop and tablet? Thanks for you help

I am looking to purchase a new laptop. I want it to be a 2-in-1, <14" screen, <4lbs, and I'd rather not spend more than $1000. I would really rather the computer/tablet/2-in-1 would come with a stylus (good one), but if not, please recommend one. Alrighty then. I've been looking at a few different choices at this point and they are: Lenovo Thinkpad 10 Lenovo ThinkPad Helix 2 (2014- new) Surface Pro 3 My main use for this device would be typing notes in class, but preferably using a stylus/digitizer to write notes (I'm a sophomore in college in the USA). Along with that, the laptop (or whatever I end up getting) will need to do the most basic things like Netflix, simple games like Bloons Tower Defense 5 (I'm young at heart, what can I say?), and other on the go things. As a side note, this computer needs to run a full version of Windows 8.1, rather than any RT version. I think that's all I got. Thank you in advance for any advice. I really appreciate it. OH, and one last question would be should I bother waiting for Black Friday or Cyber Monday to purchase, or would it not matter too much? Thanks again!

The title really says it all. I'm looking for a 2 in 1 laptop that would be good for taking notes by hand with (so needs active digitizer), while also having the option for a keyboard. I narrowed it down to these two since they do what I want are around the same price point. Any suggestions? Which is better? Different and better option? Thanks everyone!
