I have a decently beefy pc (RTX 3090, ryzen 7 5800X3d, and 32GB 3600MHz cl18 RAM) and I like to install programs that I occasionally use and pretty much not delete them. The vast majority of them only launch when I click on them, and I never let them open on startup. Will having tons of programs that aren't open in the background affect the pc? I also have a decent amount of programs that DO open whenever I start up my computer which are: NVIDIA settings, MSI afterburner and riva tuner, AutoHideMouseCursor, remote mouse, steam, and razer central (which have razer synapse and razer cortex)

So I’m planning an upgrade and i have about 800 bucks to spend. I recently got an 1440p monitor and in some games my current setup struggles. I mostly play Warthunder, Factorio, Star Wars Battlefront 2. I’m not sure what route to take. Should i dump it all in a 7900XT or should I split it up and go with an 14600k and a more modest 7800XT? These seem to be the best bang for your buck options but maybe I’m missing something. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks Current Specs 5800x asus b550 3600 cl16 16gb 3060 ti 1440p 165Hz

Hello all! I need a little help on this one! I currently have a machine that has a R9 7900x and a Zotac 3090 with 16GB Ram running off of a 1000w NZXT PSU. I only play on a 1080p monitor which I'm aware is overkill but lol. I have had so many performance issues with this machine from constant DirectX crashes to games sometimes playing at 20 fps and when someone starts shooting or calls in a killstreak in CoD, it freezes the system from anywhere from 1-5 seconds meaning I'm already dead and spectating my teammates from the time the freezing stops. its becoming annoying to the point I've been playing on my Ps5 more then this machine. ASWELL AS THAT, even if i leave the machine on for over 24 hours, windows becomes unresponsive and games run at such low fps that its not even worth playing; while a quick turn off and on again fixes the issue i would love to maybe understand a fix for this. Game crashes also causes whole system crashes causing the machine to turn off and on again randomly. I've updated all my drivers on the GPU side and I always do a clean install. I just feel like I'm missing something that's causing such low performance. If anyone can leave suggestions that would be beautiful! I've left MW2 Benchmarks to maybe help a tad Thanks gamers.

Hey folks, Reaching out today to see if anyone may have some troubleshooting for my performance issues with my setup: Laptop - Samsung GalaxyBook 360 with Intel i7 1255U and 16 gb of ram eGPU - Radeon RX580 8gb connected via Thunderbolt 3 with Akitio Node Titan GPU housing I often get solid performance out of this card, but one of my most frequently played games, Destiny 2, seems to test my card a little more than it should. On medium-low settings, I often struggle to maintain a solid 60 fps, even when the enemies aren't populated so heavy. I have tried some solutions including moving the game from a HDD to SSD, optimizing my settings in AMD Adrenaline, and making sure the power mode is correct and Destiny is prioritized. I ran a 3DMark Timespy trial, and got around the normal performance for an RX580. I haven't really seen much regarding my issue, and I'm beginning to think it may be an issue in Bungie's notorious spaghetti code that my card is not being properly utilized. Overall, just looking for any insight. I can make a log in HWinfo while playing the game if anyone would like to see that. Thanks.

I´ve tried playing far cry 5 and ghost recon wildlands, my fps arent terrible but they are way under what is expected from my setup. I cant get afterburner to work, but the wildlands benchmark says my gpu usage is average 76% and i get only 50 fps on mixed high/ultra. On the far cry 5 benchmark i get only 75fps average on high. I´ve tried to change some settings but nothing worked. Nvidia setting is set to max performance, system too. I´ve tried everything but nothing works. Im running a msi gtx 1080 with an r7 2700 and 16 gigs ram. Im playing in 1080p.

So, I bought an ssd to upgrade my laptop's hdd, BX500 250 GB, a few months ago and a few days ago I noticed extremely low transfer speeds up to the point that my hdd is upto 4 times faster than the ssd. When I transfer a file, I get speed upto 1~8 mpbs, in both Arch Linux and Windows. I tried the same with a Linux Mint live disc and the result was still the same. I tried reformatting the drive thinking maybe a corrupt partition, but didn't work either. Then I install Crucial Executive Software and looked at the smart data, no red flags either. The ssd showed 90 % life remaining and a good health. The speed however returned when I manually went to defragment and optimize in Windows and trimmed the ssd, but dropped down soon back to 1~8 Mbps. I don't have any clue to why it's happening. If anyone can help, then please.

Please Someone HEEEELP Ive had this laptop a year and ever since I got it, when I game, every couple minutes fps drop to 10 or so and then go back up after half a minute. I tried changing the graphic settings to medium, still happening, and low, still happening. I monitored what was happening and realised that my GPU MHz were dropping from 1500Mhz to 150 Mhz when Fps dropped. I tried undervolting both my GPU and CPU (even though its a GPU problem) this only dropped temps to around 75cº, but same problem. I tried uninstalling existing drivers of my GPU and installing latest versions and the manufacturers' drivers, NOTHING I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO ANYMORE I KNOW MX150 isnt a gaming card but I should be more than capable to play some GTA every now and then. (IT DOESNT USE THE INTEL GRAPHICS WHILE GAMING BTW) I have an Aus UX333FN: i5-8265U NVIDIA GeForce MX150 8Gb Ram -1st pic is GAMING WHILE FPS BAD -2nd is GAMING WHILE FPS GOOD (bare in mind that when i exit the game MHz drop because Im not in the game) -3rd is NOT GAMING -4th is GPU SPECS

Hello Good Folks, I have bought a new laptop from Asus (the asus duo), and the battery runs out too fast. From reading online and getting in contact with people who have the exact same model, my models seems to be getting a much shorter battery life. I have tried everything, including playing around with settings, reinstalling windows, getting everything (including drivers) up to date, and even going to the service center to install a factory level OS copy. The battery life was too variable. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a safe (not shady) battery monitoring app that displays graphs and tells battery use by apps/services over time. It would be wonderful if anyone can suggest an app for RAM, CPU, and GPU monitoring with similar features as well. Any help is really really appreciated, even a discussion would be wonderful.

Hi there, I am in need of some advice. My RTX 2080 super (Rog Strix by Asus :} ) likes climbing to the 83 °C range and I don't like it. I will say my ambient temperature can sometimes raise a bit (approx 18 - 25 °C year round). But, I have 3 Corsair intake fans, one exhaust fan and two fans pushing air out through radiator at the top of my case. Airflow in the case isn't the problem, not from what I have seen and tested. I believe it could be the thermal paste and pads needing replacing (owned the card since 2020). Any ideas what could be causing this other than that mentioned. I have a full sized case as well as AIO for cpu. Everything tells me it is the card itself. I can only imagine what the dram temps are. But since I am slightly out of warranty I wondered if maybe I can check pads and paste. Any advice LTT forums? Thanks

Hi, I discovered a device at home still dont have the patch for Intel-SA-00088 (Meltdown & Spectre) and wondered how dangerous it is. (no online buying, no sensitive work data is actually being done). Actual use. E-mail, telework and gaming. The thing is, the processor falls short at some gaming and already bottlenecks the gpu (according to some pages at around 15 %). Will the patch destroy the only main use this device has: gaming? Is it now clear the % of loss of the processor? (i.e: is there a page that shows the performance loss for each cpu model?) An last question, if I install it and the performance becomes horrible, is there a way to uninstall that bios patch? lil edit for grammar stuff.

So Luke has now mentioned multiple times on videos that he wants to switch to Linux over Windows 10 due to some shady work by the overlord Microsoft. While I absolutely love Linux and all the flavors it comes in; I just can't leave Windows do to the lack of game support and direct x support on Linux. I would love to use Ubuntu or Linux Mint as my main OS I just play too many PC games and have a $3000 gaming computer to go with it. There just isn't many options for the Linux world and gaming... running games in WINE is a joke, most new games don't run on OpenGL (or well on OpenGL), a dual boot system just for games is a joke and time consuming switching OS'es, and lastly Virtual Machines are just not good enough on any playing field. This got me wondering if there were any other legit ways to have linux as your main os and enjoy the great gaming performance?? With Luke's recent comments this got me really really excited to see how he was going to try and pull this off? Is there anyone on the forums that have a better idea then mine or who have taken the step away from Windows, but somehow worked out the gaming ordeal. My future hope is that with the amazing performance VulkanAPI is showing, and how its made around OpenGL, we will see AAA games come to Linux with that top tier Vulkan performance! But I know I am just dreaming...

Hello everyone. This is my first post on LinusTechTips. I needed your input. I have i5 2400 processor with an Intel DQ67SW motherboard. I recently bought it and got scammed as well. (Not relevant) The Intel board has a PCIe 2.0 slot and I want to run a 750ti on it. As you guys know, 750ti is a PCIe 3.0 card. So, my question is will there be any performance drops when I will use the card in PCIe 2.0 slot? I have seen many videos all around the internet telling me that the performance drops are minimal but I want you guys to give me a verdict. I am looking to play AAA games on medium settings at 1024x768 resolution. Also, please suggest more graphics cards similar to 750 ti. I have a 500W PSU with a six pin connector.

Heyho peps So after upgrading my GPU to a brand new rtx 2080 super i get severe lag/bad performance. Cant get 60fps stable on nether Overwatch nor League of Legends even on lowest settings @1440p. I even lag just moving my mouse on my desktop. Monitor is connected to GPU. CPU: i7-6700k MB: Asus Z170 Deluxe (BIOS updated to 3801) RAM: HyperX Predator (no XMP enabled) GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GeForce RTX 2080 Super (Dresh installed new drivers) PSU: Corsair RM750i OS: Win10 64-Bit Version 1803 (Build 17134.885) CPU temps go too around 50°C and GPU hits 55. Can you guy suggest further Troubleshooting steps? Many Thanks

I KNOW!!! PC building simulator isn't insanely accurate as far as how close it is to building a PC in real life. BUT! How accurate is the simulator in simulating PC performance? If I build a computer in the game, and build an identical computer in real life... Will the benchmarks on 3D Mark be similar to the real life rig, and will over clocking performance equal real life output with the settings set the same? Any one have PC builds that are able to be repeated inside PC Build simulator and run benchmarks in both to give comparison? Basically, for very simple performance comparisons of different build options, how much can PC build simulator be used as a test bed without breaking the bank?

Hey there, I Have some performance issues when I play PUBG. The game will stutter, And drop FPS. I have tried some Nvidia Inspector Profiles from other forum posts, But I get this error when I try to apply them, Here is what the error says. "DRS_savesettings failed: NVAPI_ACCESS_DENIED" Here Is my setup. Intel i9-9980xe, Dual 2080ti Founders edition, Samsung 970 Pro 1TB, 64GB DDR4 3200MHz Corsair Dominator, 1200W Corsair AX1200i. The Display I use is a Asus 2560x1440 165hz IPS. I have read that PUBG runs bad with SLI, I tried playing with one GPU disabled and it still will stutter and drop frames. I have used Nvidia Inspector on other games like BFV to get better performance out of both cards and it worked great I went from 80-90 fps on ultra settings to 140-160 on ultra by using a profile I found on a forum. But now I get than error. On PUBG I get around 90-130 fps on medium settings but then it will drop to 20,30,40,50 FPS at random times. I know the game runs like crap but my buddy has a PC with a 2080ti, 9700k, 970 Pro and I think 32 GB ram and his game runs much better than mine he has a 2560x144, 165hz monitor. he says he has around 150-165 and he has some settings set higher than mine. Any help will be appreciated, I don't know much about working on PCs. I bought this PC from Digital Storm. I Feel like the SLI was a waste of money, And I think the 9700k would of been a better choice but I already ordered my PC When that was Released. Thanks.

Hello there, I have now for about half a year experienced a phenomenon which I am completly lost to understand. What happens: I fire up my computer and everything is fine for the first 2-3 hours. Then, my GPU (2080 ti Black) has sudden performance drops. Drops happen under slight to heavy load - only browser usage is fine. I attached a screenshot in the attachmentts where you can see what I mean. all my 3 Displays (2 x 1080p, 1x1440p) freeze for about 1-3 seconds, and everything is back to normal. Therse performance drops happen about every 30 seconds to 2 minutes. What is my setup: CPU:Intel Core 8700k Motherboard: MSI Z370 Gaming M5 RAM: 2 x 16 GB GSkill neo 3600 CL 18 GPU: 2080 TI Black PSU: BeQuiet Straight 11 1000W Harddrive: 512 GB SSD (98% remaining "health") GPU - Cooling: Standard air cooling - Lian Li O11 dynamic with 9 case fans (6 in, 3 out) What I have tried so far: - I already reinstalled windows and all programms - tried a different harddrive as bootdrive - lowered gpu power usage and temperature - scaled down graphics ingame for less load (but as I said the amount of load does not matter) - opend up case while gaming for more air flow - checked if all fans work correctly - cranked up gpu fan speed to max - upgraded from old 2400mhz ram to 3600mhz - upgraded PSU from 650W to 1000W - different cables for power delivery - used different PCIE slot on the motherboard - resetted all bios values (no OC whatsoever) - updated BIOS - (ofc checked drivers and tried different versions) - (ofc cleaned all the case fans, gpu fans from dust) Additional Information: - screenshot was taken during Borderlands 3 gameplay - the second smaller drop was when I tabbed out - the performance drop is highlighted yellow - a restard of my system "fixes" the problem for about 10-20 mins - then the same problem occurs The last thing I can think of is: motherboard or gpu is broken. If you got any experience here or any kind of suggestion what I could try to fix this problem I would greatly appreciate that. Thank you for your time and have a great day, PhotonMan

I own a HP pavilion n209tx laptop. The hp website states max RAM capacity is 12gb. Currently I have 4gb*2 on both slots. I would like to know if replacing one 4gb with an 8gb stick of same frequency will affect performance? I see that running photoshop+lightroom and adobe Bridge at the same time slows my system down. I understand a better processor would solve the issue but since the memory often requires more RAM, does that mean that the 12gb will improve performance by at least 10-15%? What happens to dual channel? Should I stick to the 8gb?

So this is my first post in the forums but I'm confused about optane since its dissapointing launch the only times I've seen it is conveniently next to a sponsored by Intel logo, So my current rig has 2 4tb hard drives one blue for movies ect 5400 speed, and 1 black 7200 speed for games and some software, I only have a Samsung 960 evo as a boot drive and a hyper x fury ssd for mostly bethesda games and mods. So my main question is I've got a spare m.2 slot on my motherboard (maximus is formula) is it worth getting an optane drive to speed up my slower hdd's and does it take pcie lanes Thanks in advance

Hello. So I have been dealing with micro stutters on my computer for some time now on this computer. I finally got a USB drive to run memtest with and found that I had errors when all 4 slots were filled with 8 gb Corsair DDR4 ram running @ 3000mhz with XMP enabled. Individually no sticks or slots had any problems. When I ran with 2 and 3 slots filled I also did not get errors. What could be the cause of this? I have a feeling that this is what is causing my microstutters to occur. One thing to note about the problem is that they only occur after prolonged use, and restarts sometimes help the problem. The only thing that 100% fixes it is leaving the desktop off for a period of time. Some things I have noticed about the stutters: - It never causes audio to freeze as well, only visual - They only last for 1 to 2 seconds - It only started after moving to a new dorm. I was thinking of upgrading my GPU, PSU and storage soon in the hopes that maybe the problem is related to those. Any thoughts?

Hey guys! I am going to university, so I am on a really tight budget. I current have an ASUS ROG GL-552VW gaming laptop, but I really want a desktop to get work done in my dorm. I work a lot faster with a bigger screen and a mechanical keyboard so I really want a desktop. This is mostly going to be used for doing work (emails, office, excel, etc) and playing league of legends. I can bring my pereferals with me even my monitor. I currently already have a spare 500W PSU and a HDD. here is my list! Please let me know your opinions! http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/C8gp8K

Hello! This is my first post on the LTT community forums. I noticed that my Radeon HD 7990 has been way worst than when I first got it and is worse on the benchmarks that I have seen for the card. I have Crossfire enabled, MSI Afterburner says that GPU 1 and 2 are both at 1000 Mhz while gaming. The temperature stays around 76 degrees celsius. At 1080P and Ultra graphics setting on the Hitman: Absolution benchmark I get an average of 44 FPS, a minimum of 32, and a maximum of 56 FPS, I ran this benchmark multiple times. Star Wars: Battlefront Beta got around 80 FPS on low without the AMD Catalyst BETA drivers. It would sometimes stutter and go down to 50, but that was rare. My Specs: AMD FX 8320 @4.3 GHZ Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 7990 (of course) Motherboard: AsRock 990 FX Extreme 4 12 GB RAM Corsair TX 850 PSU OS: Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit Storage: Sandisk 240GB SSD (OS, GTA V, Dying Light) WD Blue 1TB HDD (Games and files) Random 400GB HD (Videos) I did try dusting my computer and reinstalling the graphics drivers, but that didn't do anything. I don't know my power consumption. Thanks, Ferret
