Hi i have a Lenovo U165 primarly used for net browsing, watching movies and youtube. Specs are: Amd Athlon II Neo K125 CPU, Mobility Radeon HD4200, upgraded ram to 4GB and a Intel 60GB SSD. I tried: windows 7 -slow windows10 -still slow and has a compatibility problem with gpu driver. Ubuntu - better but still not much faster, same problem with gpu driver.. i dont know much about linux and the driver instalation in ubuntu was a nightmare. Is there anything not outdated i could use on this netbook?..where all drivers will work. Only software i need is internet browser and hw accelerated movie player basically.

A teacher asked me if I can repair her personal laptop, it's a Asus X200M Netbook. The first thing I noticed was the damaged cracked screen so I replaced it with a new one. Then, I replaced the battery because it was not charging and it was making a squeaking noise which I thought I was the Hard Drive but it wasn't. The CPU fan wasn't spinning at all so I snipped the blue wire so now it spins (working) including changing the CR2032 battery on the motherboard. I checked the videos on Youtube for this model on why screen wasn't working and I've tried every method including HDMI cable on TV and nothing shows up on the screen. The motherboard is responding to the keyboard because I can press the CapLock key. I have two prices, at Amazon the motherboard cost $129 to $198 and on Ebay the motherboard cost $55 to $98 (open box). Damaged Screen - Replaced with a New Screen Damaged Battery - Replaced with a New Battery CR2032 Battery on the MotherBoard - Replaced Any advice will do. Thank you

Hey there. Got an old Asus Eee PC Netbook (pretty sure the model is 1001PX-BBK301, not 100% positive though) that I want to squeeze some more life from before replacing it. Do you guys have any recommendations for distros that would be right for older and/or slower hardware? I know there are some other Ubuntu flavors geared towards old hardware, but I'm not experienced with them enough to know which may be the right choice for me. Inside is an Intel Atom N450, 2GB of DDR2, and a 160GB HDD. Thanks!

Hi guys, im after a little advice in recommending a device for a client. Basically they're after a laptop with a sim slot, very uncommon in our country at least so I'll have to source overseas. It's got to be current and quick enough that they won't need an upgrade for a while to come. im thinking just a surface 3 but the pro doesn't have a sim slot. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Hi Guys, After watching a couple of reviews on the GPD P2 Max, I immedietely got my card out and backed it on Indiegogo. The last few days I have been reading the comments a little, just to see the kind of things people say and if there are any details that come out which didn't in "review" samples, and something I didn't think about was the keyboard layout.... its US, and I'm in the UK. Having a pound sign available without alt-codes is a pretty big deal, and the @ sign being on the apostrophe key is also pretty importaint for general typing comfort... Im sure there would be other things I would eventually get annoyed about and stop using it... so unfortunately I had to request a refund. I am disappointed, very disappointed, because I think the form factor would have really been ideal for the travelling I do. I have a Thinkpad T480s currently, and it's hardly a bohemoth, but I really want a "backup" laptop for those business trips where I dont actually need a 4c/8t, and just need something ultra portable, with decent battery life to keep me going through long journeys, but that is capabile of a bit of heavy lifting in a pinch. So what else is actually out there in the sub 13" form factor that's worth considering? Thanks in advance! (edit: price isn't a significant factor)

Hello LTT community! Once again I am asking for your support. Things are like this, I have this old Intel atom tablet that I mainly use for media consumption (YouTube) and a bit of web browsing. Being an Intel atom I would aspect it to overheard a bit more than normal but not as much as untouchable levels. If the back portion of it is covered, it overheats like hell... It starts dropping frames all over the place and even the UI lags. Yes, it's true that the battery is old and the CPU is 32nm but when brand new it barely did anything like this, I was even gaming on it... The device in cause it's an Asus Fonepad 7 Fe170CG (2014) Does anyone have any ideas what is happening?

G'day Ladies and Gents, Whats the best option for an 2009-ish Netbook, that shipped with Windows XP? The specs are... Intel Atom Z520 2 GB Ram (Upgraded) Intel GMA Graphics And a 500 GB HDD (Also Upgraded) I'd prefer anything other then XP, I've tried Everything I can think of. What do you guys think? Should I throw it outside and run it over with my quad? Or, is there some kind of Linux or MacOS or Custom Windows thats optimized for Atom CPU's? Cause I'm lost.

Sorry for simplified English. Now it is time, I need to build my personal NAS server. But I do not wanted spend any rubles on this build, because I have enough scrap parts. So there is tree ways to approach my goal. The fast and simple solution. Raspberry Pi B3+ (not exactly a scrap) Advantages: good software, fast build, power efficient, rational. Disadvantages: USB 2.0 Power limitations to HDD, in best scenario you can connect maximum 1 HDD, other HDD needs power supply The fast and simple solution 2. Old netbook ASUS 1015BX Advantages: more good software fo x86 architecture, fast build, almost power efficient, almost rational. Disadvantages: 2GB of ram, USB 2.0, only 2 HDD maximum, One in direct SATA connection to motherboard, and another via USB, need to build case, I only have single motherboard. Not fast, not rational way. Build NAS from 775 socket parts. Advantages: no limitations in software, 4 SATA HDD. I can use quad core CPU or simple Celeron. Disadvantages: Not power efficient, not silent, not cool. I will try all of these. And will tell about them in this post. Which one build you wanna see first, or maybe you have some advices for me? teaser photo: "the scrap parts" silent 1015bx notebook.

Hi, I have been looking for USB stubs, sticks, and Micro SD, and SD cards using a boot main drive version of flash, that won't wear out quickly when used as the boot drive on a window laptop or embedded electronics. Is there any 3DXpoint USB/microSD/SD coming? Which would solve these issues. I'm also looking to use them for recording storage, high speed like an internal UFS chip. But can't find any devices with a ufs 3.0 or 3.1 chip. I'm looking at recording up to 2400MB/s, but hopefully less than 600MB/s. I know Linus covered the failure of normal flash storage device as main drives. So, I thought somebody might have found something? Thank you.

I currently have a lenovo w530 for school. It is still pretty powerful but I need a smaller laptop. Something that can pull its weight in running VMs, compiling code and 3d CAD. I would also like it to handle gaming decently. I have looked at the stealths and alienware 13 r3s but they are expensive and am trying to find if anything else exists. Requirements: CPU: 4 physical cores minimum (I am ok to go back to the 3000 gen for intel | does amd even have any offerings?) GPU: 970m+ (would prefer 980m, 1050ti, 1060) RAM: 16gb (or expandability to 16) Display: 1080p (would love high refresh rate but probably not realistic and only worth with better GPUs) Size: 13 inch (14inch if it hits all the reqs but def not going to 15inch)

Hi, I have an old netbook on which I wanted to install a leightweight OS for some web browsing / html editing / terminal usage. Since most of the default desktop configuratins of Ubuntu or Debian (even lxde) are already too much for that device, I thought about using a terminal Installation of Debian and using some different leightweight desktop and window Managers. Are there some combinations that you can recommend to me? It doesn't need to look fancy or have a bunch of features. Or all in all some Distri. who are well suited for low power Notebooks with good wifi support. Specs: CPU: Pentium M 753 1x 1.2GHz RAM: 512MB HDD: 60GB Display: 1280 x 768

HiI bought a USB soundcard for my recently bought netbook since its onboard soundcard is pretty bad.The soundcard that I bought is a Ewent EW3751 R1.I'm testing it on my other laptop now and it's terrible. The sound is shallow, a bit high pitched and not much bass. How is it possible that my laptops onboard soundcard is so much better than this external one?I don't get it. Do I realy have to buy a 100$ soundcard to get normal decent audio quality?Am I missing something here? Do you guys think that this soundcard (https://www.bol.com/nl/p/creative-soundblaster-play-2-geluidskaart-zwart/9200000029940468/) would provide good/decent audio quality or would I need a more expensive one? Thanks,Anon356

This problem was solved by using a alternative browser called QupZilla. I Still don' t have any idea how to solve the problem with midori so if your system can't run it like mine Go try it out!! Goodluck Shenkie Help guys, I' just got a old hp Compaq mini CQ10-500 netbook, This device has a atom N455, 1gb ddr2 ram and an (updated) windows 7 starter os. I just installed the ''light'' web browser Midori but whenever i try to run the browser i get a popup from Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library (what?!?) and it says This Application Has Requested The Runtime To Terminate It In An Unusual Way. Please Contact The Application's Support Team For More Information. now i don' t know how to contact the midori developers and i just want to run a browser that looks great and doesn't kill my 1gb of ram. Chrome just uses to much ram , QT browser can' t even play a youtube video and it's hud is just outdated and ugly and light firefox didn' t run because i was missing something... I' m trying to update my windows, it has been searching for updates (via ethernet) for hours...... I have no idea what's wrong but i think that I'm going to upgrade this thing to windows 10 32bits as fast as i can (the upgrade panel didn' t show up the last update soo I' m still waiting...) But until then Can Someone Please tell me how to run this browser!!

Hi everyone in the community! First, I want to apologize for any spelling/grammar mistake, since English is not my main language. That being said. It's been ages since my last post (?), partially because exams and stuff, so it's good to be back! I'm currently attending what you guys on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean call "a degree" on computer science,to be an engineer, to be more specific. Why do I tell you this? Well, my old, crappy laptop broke a few days ago, and I currently have a "powerful enough" desktop PC for my daily needs (mostly gaming, viewing Netflix and light video/image editing), and of course programming and testing algorithms. What I am looking for, is not a BEASTLY POWERFUL 4K GAMING LAPTOP WITH BACKLIGHT KEYBOARD. No, seriously, I'm not. I am looking for a swift, small, 10"-15" netbook/laptop, capable of running my beloved Fedora WS 23 (I know, there may be better Linux distributions out there, but I like KDE-Fedora, ok?)... and anything else, since is going to be used to take class notes, web browsing and probably programming. And that's why I am here, I want you guys to help me find that piece of hardware that I need. I am not on a "small budget", strictly speaking, but the best price-per-performance ratio, the better. And I think that's it, if you need more info on my "problem", just ask. Keep rockin!

My cousin's son was given an Acer Aspire ONE D270-1375 upon completion of a govt program and I was asked to "see what I could do with it". I performed a factory reset, did a bit of decrappifying and installed a few useful programs. He tried to play a few movies I'd DLed for him a while back but they stutter horribly and the sound constantly goes out of sync. Task Manager showed GOMPlayer, VLC, and even SMPlayer alone using near 100% CPU capacity and 75% memory. I don't know enough about how different media gets processed to know what I should be changing in terms of file conversion (or what to look for DLing for them in the future) to make the files more palatable to a 1.6ghz atom processor w/GMA 3600 integrated graphics and only 1GB of RAM. Could someone please tell me if/how to play a movie on this Netbook. Thanks.

Guys I need your help, so my friend asked me to troubleshoot his netbook because upon startup a BSOD appears, so i tried to see if it can be repaired using windows' automatic repair and as expected it fixed nothing, and every startup option safemode etc. is no use it still generates BSODs, then i tried to use my win 7 bootable usb stick and heck i can't even go to the installation menu every attempt generates different errors, so i assumed it was the ram and then i ran memtest86+ and halfway through the test i noticed that the errors are too many, so my question is, am i right to assume that the ram is the culprit or i just misinterpreted the memtest logs? i attached a photo as a reference of what i meant... thanks in advance LTT community, and greetings from the Philippines

I upped my budget for a school laptop and I can't decide what to get, I was looking at the dell Inspiron 11 3000 or the yoga 2 11 but I know there's others out there and I can't seem to decide what computer to get. I don't mind used laptops or laptops that are a couple years old, as long as the battery and performance are good. The only requiredments i have are nothing above 13.3 inches and the battery has to last at least 6 hours for school and I would choose a more powerful older laptop as long as it meets the requirements than a brand new one with a slower performance , I'm willing to make certain exceptions with the battery life if the laptop has a dedicated GPU though , thanks to whoever post I just really can't make up my mind. Oh and yes sited like eBay are allowes

The netbook in question: Packard Bell Dot S The specs: 10.1" 1024x600 display, 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450, 1GB RAM, 250GB disk, Windows 7 Starter 32-bit. After years of advice telling my grandma to get a new laptop, she just recently bought one. I've fixed it up for her, installed MS Office, removed bloatware, transferred all her files from her old computer. Now I'm left with this Packard Bell Dot S notebook that has a 10.1" 1024x600 display, 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450, 1GB RAM, 250GB disk, Windows 7 Starter 32-bit. I have no use for it in it's current form, but since I know that a Raspberry Pi can run XBMC, I figure that a more powerful intel-based machine should be able to do so too? Thanks in advance! -Zonus EDIT: By this I mean a downloadable lightweight android/linux based stand-alone version. Either this or installing Android and use it with a touchpad and keyboard for navigation... Then install the android app.

Here are the specs from Speccy Operating System Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit CPU Xldebuntu 14.04 Kali Linux 1.0.9 Wifiway 3.4 CPU Intel Atom N450 @ 1.66GHz Pineview-N 45nm Technology RAM 1.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 (5-5-5-12) Motherboard Dell Inc. 0GHG2G (CPU 1) Graphics Generic PnP Monitor (1024x600@60Hz) Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 (Dell) Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 (Dell) Storage 232GB Seagate ST9250315AS (SATA) 36 °C Optical Drives Im going to upgrade the RAM to 2gb, and I was thinking about adding an ssd. i know that it will cost a lot for the 128+ ssd id need. i am a high school student and i love the size of this laptop and i just want it to be faster. the only problem I have with it is the screen resolution is just terrible. im typing on it now and teksyndicate is not formatted for it. So my questions are: 1. Do you think it will improve the speed at all? 2. Would it be worth it? 3. Are their other options in this size range that are modifiable (so not apple)? 4. Know any lightweight window apps? im stuck on ie... Help 5. tips for optimizing windows 8? Thanks for any help

Hi Guys! One of my first posts on here so go lightly ;p I'm a student who is currently studying in a high school, I have a gaming PC which I use for my school work and gaming but I need a portable option for when I am not at home and I need to do a bit of work. I will obviously use it for a bit of recreational stuff, chromecasting and watching youtube etc. I can afford an Ipad but to be honest I prefer the formfactor of an Ipad Mini which I could get a keyboard for. So, what would you pick? Ipad Mini, Chromebook or Netbook? Edit: I have an Iphone 5 by the way

Hello everybody! So, Iv decided I need a new laptop for school and basic on-the-go stuff & maybe a SNES emulator or something & I really like the design of the Dell Inspiron Mini Duo. My idea is to buy one on the cheep used & put a bigger Hard Drive & 6 gigs of some old mobile RAM I have from my Moms old busted laptop in it to give it a bit more umff, then load Windows 8 (only for the better touchscreen support) & Linux Debian on it as a dual boot. I was just wondering if any of you guys have any tips for me, or maybe know of a newer similar netbook I could get with some more power from the start, but equally cheep. $400ish is about my limit, so thats why Im looking at going older right now Anyway, Thanks again guys. Love this forum

I have an old Lenovo S100 netbook, which I haven't used for like 2 years now since I got my Note 2 back than. It has Windows 7 Starter pre-installed on it (Considering switching to Linux), an Atom 455 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM. This is what I want to do: To print something from anywhere in the house, by having my printer be shared by the netbook. Add/delete files wherever I want in the hard drive for storage Use the Bluetooth to automatically connect to my phone when my phones BT is turned on and automatically stream my phones music to a sound system the netbook will be connected to Have remote access to the netbook via TightVNC or something (Though not a big deal) I want it to be a web-server for my internet connection, so that it caches my downloads of the week. So that whenever I download updates on my phone, my brother and mom don't need to download them again, instead have it downloaded from the netbook's internet cache. Same for Windows updates and videos ofc. (I got a 1M Unlimited plan and it's not enough for our needs, and no there no better offers available) Share the Wi-Fi connection to the LAN port to connect it to an old original Xbox which is going to be used for streaming movies on an old CRT TV I got in my room. Being able to scan something on the netbook and have it automatically be saved by a press of a button in a folder where I can get the file via network. Have it be on all the time. So that when I close the lid, it doesn't go to sleep or something What I need is, help with Linux, since I have minimal experience with the platform. BTW, only the netbook will be running Linux, every other PC in the house will be running Windows 7 and 8.1. So, first things first. Based on my requirements above. What distro would you recommend?
