Why is my Internet speed halved via Port Bridged Modem/Router
Omega7ven posted a topic in Networking
I hope I am in the right chat/forum for this. I recently upgraded my Internet to Telus Purefibre 1GB. When I use the Ookla speed test when connected to my Telus Modem direct from my PC, I get close to 1GB up and down. But when I go through my router (ASUS RT-AC68U) via Port 1 on my Telus Modem and it is set to Port Bridging enabled, I only get about half the speed both up and down? I have some basic to medium understanding the technology and this is my first time on this or any type of forum but would appreciate help to understand why and how to try to get the answer to this issue. -
I have been trying FOR DAYS to get a home server up and running using the godawful ISP-provided ZTE F670L (Datasheet PDF Link). Not only that but the dashboard (or control panel) has so many spelling mistakes, sentences that make no sense at all, Wi-Fi devices cannot communicate with devices on LAN, etc. Since I live in Egypt, I cannot get another router/modem that supports a fibre cable (GPON). I thought about getting a new router/modem, connecting that to my ISP-provided piece of garbage, and using the better product to manage the network. The problem is, I am pretty new to all of this, and I did my research and narrowed my options to either the Archer C86 AC1900 or the Archer VR2100 AC2100, both from TP-Link (which I assume is a trusted manufacturer). Which of these options is better for my situation, and how can I connect the two devices (my ISP garbage and the new device) to achieve what I want? I would be very grateful if any of you wizards out there could help. Thanks!

Afternoon, all. I'm currently seeking a modem/router combo that won't start flaking on me in three years. I currently have a Netgear c7000v2 Nighthawk AC1900 modem/router that, for some reason, seems to only be able to hit 100ish mbps. According to my ISP (spectrum), I'm supposed to be getting 500mbps. I've run speed test right next to the router with my S21 and hardwired a laptop to the device, but it won't break 120mbps. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Well, after going on drunken tirades about how smartphones are terrible because they are capable of so much more than developers are willing to do, I decided to completely throw all of my phones away (not really, I just put them all in a closet, never to use them again), because they arbitrarily cannot run games and apps they easily are able to. I already knew fully well that what I wanted in a phone was a laptop, as smartphones are basically pretending to be them anyway. So anyway, because I absolutely hate phones now, I need a way to connect to a cellular network without them. How do I use a laptop to do this? Laptops with cellular built-in are extremely overpriced, to the point of making anything Apple or NVIDIA makes seem like the Costco hot dog in comparison. Why would I pay $2000 for what is a relatively basic $450 laptop just because cellular apparently dramatically increases its price? Remember, laptops have way more space to fit everything than phones do, so putting cellular features in a laptop is actually way easier than trying to cram every feature that phones have into their tiny size. I get that cellular hardware itself does technically cost money, but fitting it in even an Ultrabook (and I don't even care if the laptop is small) should not be difficult if phones can do it! I understand a maybe $50 price increase, but this is like a $1500 just because of cellular! How the hell is cellular hardware almost the price of an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 if phones are able to fit this and much more in a tiny package for $900? What the hell? I feel so stupid for being unable to comprehend this! Can someone explain like I'm five? So it was clear that the only way was to buy a cellular dongle to connect to a cellular network so I can call an Uber on my laptop. Except how do I go about buying one? I know they exist, but where? I could try asking my carrier if they have any. If you all know of any, please link them! As for the laptop itself, you know what they say about buying used... Cannot wait for a GTX 1080 Max-Q with 2 TB of storage!

Hi, I have a 100Mbps connection at home and when I do a speed test (Ookla), with lan, I get a reading of 80-90Mbps. But then I use the wifi, which is from a TPLink DIR615, in 2.5Ghz, I get a speed of only 30-50Mbps. (My model does not support 5Ghz and only has 20Mhz and 40Mhz channels). Any suggestions and insights would be welcome.

Hey everyone, I've been dealing with a puzzling issue with my modem since the start of July. It's been randomly restarting, causing my internet connection to drop. The twist here is that this only seems to happen when my PC is connected via ethernet. When I switch off the ethernet device or pull the plug on the cable, and then connect using Wi-Fi, everything runs smoothly. I've tried to troubleshoot this myself - searched all over the web, even sprung for a new ethernet cable, but no luck. The problem still persists. I've also been in touch with my ISP, asking for an upgrade since my current modem (a ZTE F612W from Telecom Egypt) is pretty old (late 2018 model). They're going to send a technician over to install a newer one, but that's yet to happen. In the meantime, I'm really hoping someone here might have some insights. Has anyone encountered something like this before? Any ideas about what could be causing this issue? On a side note, my PC is running on the latest version of Windows 11. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Can you make your own DIY cable modem out of old computer parts?

Up until several weeks ago, I had no internet issues. I frequently lose internet access to all of my devices, now; wired and wireless. My browsers and Windows network adapter diagnosis say that the DHCP server can't be reached. I use an Arris SB8200 modem and a TP-Link Archer C7 v4.0 router. My desktop is hardwired to the router. I have tried the following: Rebooting the router (no change) Connecting the desktop directly to the modem (no change) Using a different router (no change) Using a different modem (no change) I used a new modem for a week and returned it after the first disconnect happened. Calling the ISP (no problem identified) Having an ISP tech visit (no problem identified) He checked the coax cables and grounding. Of course, the internet was fine while he was here. Rebooting the modem (this usually works, but the problem returns in anywhere from a week to 5 minutes) I'm going nuts. What should my next step be? What could be the root cause?

Hi, yesterday my modem was taken by my isp to change the account binded to it to a new account that I made On returning, I saw that many of the devices in my hopuse are not getting internet from the router even if it is connected and I can even login to the router settings - but no internet. I left it as I thought it will be over when the DHCP resets itself. Today when I woke up the problem still exists and when I went further looking, I found this The NTP config was disabled and the time was 1970?! I enabled it and when applied, it didn't change anything, it is still showing 1970 and not updating!! On further looking I found that the modem ( which my ISP reset) was also having the same issue and was locked to 1970 January. I tried to manually change the date by adding NTP servers, but it still resets to Jan 1970 and not budging from that. Now these are my questions. 1. Can only my ISP change the modem time? 2. Are my router times affected due to this modem time? if not why is it not changing when I change it? 3. Are my device connection issues due to this time discrepancy? 4. If i tell the ISP to come are reset the time, will the devices be start working fine?

So basically my problem is that I want to see how to improve my internet speed on my Ps4. I just moved into a rental house where the owner provides wifi. At my old place, I just plugged my router into the wall port and ran an ethernet cable to my Ps4 for a Lan connection and it was super fast. Now I cannot run a long enough cable to the owner's router and the 2.4 GHz that the Ps4 connects to is very slow and unusable. The 5g connection from the owner's router is fine on my computer and phone, but the Ps4 internet is slow. I have my own router here and when I tried plugging it into an ethernet port on the wall in my room it didn't get any internet connection. The router the owner has is a gigaspire connected to what I believe is a modem provided by the ISP that is connected to a GPON thing on the wall. How can I either hook up my router in my room or improve my internet speed?

Hello! I finally convinced my mom to get rid of our landline so that we are not charged a stupid amount from Comcast for their Modem/Router combo. Currently we are waiting to start a new account under my name so that we can get their cheap 2 year contract and it will still be cheaper after contract when it ends. I do not want to use the ISP router again! We already have a TP-Link Archer AX50 router (I am willing to swap it out). The internet plan we are going for is the 200Mbps down 10Mbps up plan cable internet. Even though I'm a gamer its just 2 of us and the max devices online at any time is 2-3. We live in a 3 story approx 2200 sqft house. The only Ethernet wired connection in the house is to my PC. I'm hoping to get the knowledge and recommendations from this awesome community to find a worth while Modem to replace the ISP one and if needed a compatible router. As far as I got was looking at Asus routers and modems as I have had good luck with their gear in the past the only thing to fail on me is an asus rog power supply. I was looking at the CMAX6000 Modem by Asus and wondering if that's worth while since I need a coax connection modem. Thank you for any recommendations!

I added some new computers to my home network and trashed some others, so I was editing my static DHCP table. I forget what reason I restarted my router but it no longer communicates to the modem. I've had Bell 5G wireless internet for a couple years and its pretty good compared to my alternatives. It came with a crappy Bell home hub 2000 that has crap wifi and extremly basic interface. I wanted to have my own router and just the modem. I poked around in the modem and its basic as well but has info that says " IP passthrough host MAC 54:64:D9:2F:A4:D7 " witch is Sagemcom Broadband (HH2000). I told my router to clone that MAC and left it on DHCP and it worked for the past few years till today. nothing I have tried from factory resetting or firmware downgrading has worked. Am I missing something? I know running the home hub 'works' but I just dont want an extra thing in the hops using power, not to mention 3 networks I forgot to mention that I factory reset the Home hub too and it just workes as is without any user ID or password for internet only MAC. Also when it was running as I wanted without the HH in the mix, my router displayed my public IP as 'gateway', this correctly corosplonds to what DHCP says in the modem "As IP passthrough is enabled, DHCP must be enabled. When WWAN is in connected state, WWAN IP address is assigned in DHCP responses to the LAN device." If I reset my modem my router recieves DHCP ip's from my modem but quickly become invalid, also the gateway never becomes my Public IP, only 192.168.3.1 (modem)

Hi, I am looking upgrade my wifi system, at the moment I am using the modem that my internet provider (TalkTalk UK) with an Netgear Extender EX2700. I have researched Mesh WiFi and getting a better router that 'takes over' the orginal modems function and come up with lot of option. I personally was looking in £150 range for any improvement but can see a max of £200 depends on spec and future proof. I was suggested website below but its a little steep, https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-wireless-satellite-extender/dp/B01N4F1192/ref=sr_1_9?crid=21Q55MNV8OZP6&dchild=1&keywords=netgear+extender&qid=1613769178&sprefix=netgear+ex%2Caps%2C178&sr=8-9 My Problem: - there are more than 20+ devices on the wifi network including smart tvs, alexas, laptops, etc - signal is weak upstairs - i pay for 70mbs and as my house is an older one and electric not updated, I don't have ethernet port or wire coming upstairs to connect to extender so acts as a repeater - I looked into what frequency my wifi was on and matched with other peoples wifi near me so there is interference there but not really sure how to interpret data tbh and how to chnage what channel my 2.5+5 GHz runs on Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can improve it? Any suggest of alternative or comparison tables that I can view myself?

I've been looking for a VERY cheap Coaxial Gigabit Modem that doesn't have a router for about 3 hours now lmao. I have a Nighthawk X4S Router which can do Gigabit but I need to upgrade my modem. I've been looking and I cant find one cheap. I don't need name brand or one that looks nice. Anyone have any ideas or modems?

So basically we are getting a new wifi router and wifi provider, we have a nbn cable that runs through the house into our modem and we want to get this router https://www.pccasegear.com/products/52558/asus-rt-ax55-ax1800-dual-band-wi-fi-6-router, will this work if we use a (I think it is a RJ45 NBN) cable or do we need something else?

Hi, I'm having problems with my internet connection. Some of the symptoms: Some pages load slowly or don't load at all for the first time. After waiting a bit and doing some refreshes, it usually loads, but it's still slow sometimes. My samsung tablet could not update because it could not connect to the update server to check for updates It could take tens of minutes to launch League of Legends. When I try to launch it, it usually brings up something that indicates that it's loading (e.g. the Riot Client logo), but most of the time it just goes away and does seemingly nothing. If I close the Riot Client from the task manager, I can start it again from the beginning. When the game client loads, it usually can't load the things inside it, usually with different errors. I'm attaching a screenshot of one of the error messages. The speedtest is usually not working. I tried it using the webpage, using the Windows application and using the Android application. I'm attaching a screenshot of the error messages. However, I can watch 4K videos on youtube without distruction, for example. The first symptom I noticed was the one with the League of Legends, and I thought that it's the fault of my PC, but the same thing happens on both my laptop and PC using my home internet, and it does not if I use my mobile data, for example. The speedtests are also working with my mobile data connection. What did I try: restart the router several times test it with both wifi and ethernet (using different ethernet ports as well) test it with different devices check the router if there is any port/ip adrress is blocked wait a few days hoping that it would go away I'm also attaching the result of pinging google.com on windows (with the "ping -l 512 -n 100 www.google.com" command). It had fluctuation, but no packet loss. My internet speed, according to my provider: 500Mbps down, 22Mbps up. I contacted my ISP a few days ago and all they said was that they will look into it, but I don't expect anything from it anymore. Note that I'm using another router in my room connected to the modem provided by the isp, both for it's switch and ap property (to get better wifi here, and to be able to use more devices with cable). I don't think that it can cause the problem, but you never know. Questions: What could be the source of the problem? What could I tell to my provider to look into? This might not be relevant, but I used to have the internet from the same provider at my previous house. Back there, I had a problem with not being able to connect to a vpn provided by my work place. They solved the problem and they told me that the problem was that I had in ipv6 address but not an ipv4, and some services require it. Could it be the problem this time again? Now I'm able to connect to the same vpn. Thanks in advance, Botond ping result.txt

I'm a new member here to the forums and not very well versed in networking setups. I'll go ahead and apologize in advance if this topic has already been covered somewhere else in the forum. I am moving into a new house and we have a new internet plan that is up to 500 mbps coming in off of a fiber optic line. My questions generally are related to what is going to be the bottleneck and what sort of speeds should I realistically buy hardware for to harness the max amount of the speed I'm paying for, such as: If I get a modem that will handle XXXmbps speed and then connect a router that's capable of 1gbps to that modem, is that 500mbps that is flowing through the modem and router now going to be split across all the connected devices? (example: 5 devices connected to router and now each one would be capped at a theoretical 100mbps) I'm worried that if I go out and buy the latest and greatest super modem and router setup that most of the potential of the setup will be wasted along with the money I paid for it over a more tame system. Thanks in advance!

So we were using a wifi router/modem for a while a 2 in 1 device but the wifi range was horrible. So we bought an asus wifi router and set the old device into modem only mode. All my devices are running ethernet cords but for some reason my PC internet speed slows down from 8-15 when i plug it into the new asus router, And when i plug it back in to the modem i get my usual speed from 250-400 mbps. This problem only occurs with my pc becasue my roku, ps5, and smart t.v. are all using ethernet cords plugged into the new asus router with no problems. Any help guys ? Also idk if this helps but on the back of the motherboard where the ethernet port is there is a green light when it is plugged into the modem and then that light switches to orange when plugged into the asus router.

So when I signed up for Xfinity service( ot because I wanted to but because it's the only 1gb bandwidth in my area) was advised against buying my own compatible modem. The reasons stated by reps were: 1. xfinity's protocol often changes around the end of the year, so if I bought my own modem I wouldn't be getting full use of the bandwidth I'm paying for. The rep told me that if I was concerned about bandwidth, I would need to buy their advertise compatible modems that are up to date once a year which would be more expensive than the $15 rental fee. 2. Security Firmware updates I have to do myself. 3. I wouldn't be able to take advantage of xfinity xfi or the xfi advance security. The thing is xfinity's 2021 modems do not allow any modifications of mode, security mode, channel selection from auto to manual, channel number, and channel bandwidth. I used to have control over these features from my old place with an older modem. With these features locked out it makes it hard to properly set up my smart home. So I am debating if I should just buy my own modem instead of renting Xfinity's modem. But I don’t know if what Xfinity is telling me is true about being locked out of full bandwidth speeds if I buy my own modem/router.

I have a tp-w8901n tp link modem router. it doesn't work anymore. the admin page (192.168.1.1) doesn't show up and the lights look like a boot loop situation. here's a 30 sec video of the lights (I'm not holding any button, the status doesn't change at all, even after a few hours): 20210906_163604.m4v and a picture of the back of the device:

Hi everyone, because of some ISP fuckery i have a very horrendous internet line (7 down 0.4 up) and no way to actually get anything better, now for my new job i find myself having to upload files on server quite often and with my upload speed even 15MB file can take a long time so i need a solution. My current setup is the standard ISP modem downstairs in my office that connects to the phone line, my PC is directly connected here and then i use a weighted switch to split the bandwidth and send it upstairs thru the electric line where i have another modem that i use as wireless AP for my family to use. I thought about getting a 4G modem and a phone SIM (data is very cheap here so i can get 120GB for 9 euros), but phone reception is terrible downstairs in my office so i can only place it upstairs and then send it downstairs thru the electric line but then i'd need some form of AP since my ISP modem doesn't support dual WAN, i need to maintain my wired internet line because i doubt i can play online games at a decent ping with 4G connection. I'm sorry if this is very confusing, just wondering if anyone has a better solution for my problem, mine sounds pretty sloppy, every bit of help is greatly appreciated

I'm operating a small business and we just got internet for our 4000sqft office space and we need some access points for our 1GB internet. We have Comcast installed here and we would rather not use their access points so that we don't need to pay their monthly lease on it. Are there any recommended access points for a unit of this size? I've heard of Ubiquiti AC Pro being good but not sure if there's a better alternative? Our budget is to keep it under $400 if possible. Would a range extender be better or an access point is more suitable? Also, what modem/router would be good to use as well so that we don't need to use Comcast's devices?
