Recently, I've been in search of a new mobile workstation for my business, exploring various options. One that has particularly caught my attention is the upcoming Framework 16. However, this weekend, while I was traveling to visit my family, an unexpected work task arose. In a pinch, I resorted to using my mother-in-law's Chromebook, which she had snagged as a Black Friday special. Through the wonders of Chrome Remote Desktop, I was able to connect to my powerful desktop workstation back home. Surprisingly, the Chromebook proved more than capable of fulfilling my requirements, without the need for the processing power found in a high-end laptop that typically costs over $1500. I'm curious if anyone else has embraced this setup in their own lives and can provide insights into its effectiveness. Given that my business demands the use of a top-tier computer for tasks such as CAD/CAM and rendering, I'm now contemplating the idea of forgoing the purchase of a high-end workstation and instead opting for a SIM card-enabled Chromebook. Any thoughts or opinions on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Is it bad that when I applied the default overclock of MSI Afterburner to my Quadro 3000m while playing Warhammer Chaosbane it freezed the whole laptop and then it said in the notifications "application access to graphics hardware has been blocked" and the whole window of the game turned white? it also fucked up the windows explorer and so had to restart it Also I noticed that the FPS's of the game where increased from 40 to 56 for a moment before it freezed and what I said above happend. I have applied the default overclock to the card before which is (core clock 450mhz to 585mhz and memory clock 1250mhz to 1625mhz) while playing League of Legends or gaming on a android emulator and nothing bad happened The machine is the Dell Precision m6600 with the i7-2860qm and 8gb of ram, hope you can tell me some things about this, thank you in advance

Hello, so, in not an extended period of time I'm looking to open, clean and repaste my machine but there's a thing, in where I live most of the shops sell mostly low quality products from unknown brands so.. Can you recomend me types of thermal paste (as cheap as you can get without being a thing that lasts a short period of time and its really bad) that will work just fine for my machine? I never bought thermal paste before. I'm from Uruguay, hope you can give me some advice, thank you in advance! NOTE: There's online shops anyway where I can find more variety so recommend me just what type or whatever will be adecuate to my machine if you have any idea, thank you

As far as laptops go, what sort of laptop would allow someone to edit in all of the Adobe applications without hesitation? Including having a decent grade IPS panel for good correction, and whatever else. Sort of a "Mobile Workstation". As I am a Certified Video Editor. So I will need something that will help me when I'm on the go. Obviously I'd be spending in at least the 2K range, or more. Any good recommendations? As far as footage, just assume 4K, motion graphics, 3D graphics with Element 3D in after effects, some what large timelines in adobe premiere. Obviously I have a main Desktop at home, but something that is powerful enough if I have to travel, or need to be on the go that it would work great.

Hi guys, this is one of my first posts here, i'm starting a new thread to ask you suggestions for my new notebook that i need to buy. First of all i'll use it professionally, so it has to be reliable first of all, than i need: 15 or 16 inches full-HD screen VGA output, 2 USB ports on each side, quick FN key to turn off the screen LED for hard drive load, (as i saw many these days are missing it) ram not soldered onboard same for the cpu, no bga but socketed, so no i7-xxxxU/H but i7-xxxxM/Q removable battery I can drop 1300usd max I noticed this kind of notebooks are not produced anymore, but i wish i don't have to buy a used one, like HP Elitebook for example Anyone has idea on what is on the market that fits my needs? I'm not able to find anything, only HP ZBook 15 G3 Mobile Workstation is close enough, but it's too expensive. Thanks, and sorry for my english, let me know if you need to know something else or if it is not clear

New Laptop, control fan noise? (2in1 144hz?)
Chris V posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hey guys, Ill make it short. First off: thanks for taking the time. Thinking of buying a new laptop. I produce music, and make music videos too. I have a powerful desktop if things should get real sticky (that Ill use, say if things get laggy or should I require faster export times; or other example, mixing and mastering my songs). For work I use adobe acrobat, word, excel, outlook extensively and do note taking / reading on an ipad pro (10.5 120hz). Since Im used to having the latter, a high refresh rate, bright screen would be amazing. My plan is to just ditch all the devices I got now and get 1 object that just does it all and period. Im sick of moving data around and not finding notes or reminders, cause devices dont sync etc etc (or apps just log you out after an update; like outlook on iOS). What can you recommend? "dream" laptop - bright, high refresh rate, touch screen; pref 1080p or 1440p - optimally 2in1 design (for writing on the screen, like on paper) - powerful CPU (thinking of H series, with a Throttlestop "power saving" profile for when im not plugged in); preferrably new ryzen tho (cheaper / energy efficiency? I'd have to read up this topic though, so dont worry about intel/amd too much now) - dedicated GPU (1660 ti - 2060 ish? I would not go for max q, since I think it takes too much of a performance hit) - pen - good touchpad, and keyboard - solid IO - excellent cooling - that if I use like a "save energy" profile under windows / equivalent manual setting in Throttlestop - doesnt make any noise when idle (library) or when in DAW (recording vocals) You got any ideas? I greatly appreciate your time and help! Greetings, Chris -
I just saw the video on the helios 500, Mr Linus you said the core processor R7 2700 was on a desktop socket. So far remember you saying these are upgradable : M.2 - x1 2.5 ssd socket - x2 Ram slots - x4 Will it be possible to upgrade the 2700 to the zen 2 processor when it comes out?

mobile workstation What laptop should I buy?!
vishal_adi posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hey guys, I'm an architecture student and I'm looking to buy a new laptop.. I'm confused as to what laptop to buy and what configuration would best suit me.. I need to run heavy softwares such as SketchUp, Rhino, VRay, Blender, Photoshop, Premiere and other such heavy sotwares.. My primary goal is to achieve workability on the device and gaming is always gonna come second to work for me.. Since most of these softwares render a lot, I got confused if I should choose between the server grade chips or the consumer grade chips.. and I'm a big big noob and I am not sure what configuration to settle in for either.. My budget is $1400 USD.. I need portability and hence the choice to settle for a mobile workstation.. Thanks in advance to everyone helping me out on this..- 5 replies

Hello everyone! Last year I bought myself rather powerful laptop (HP Pavilion Power 15-cb011ur: core i7-7700HQ, GTX 1050 4Gb, SSD - 128 Gb, HDD - 1 Tb, Windows 10). I had choosen this model because of low price and because of what I need in PC. Unfortunately, there are some annoying problems with stability work of this HP (not just in my case, other people have similar problems too). I had gave this laptop to service center twice, but it didn't lead to success. So I want to change this PC. I have a deal with some engineering / scientific programs, calculations, coding and modeling. Sometimes I game in computer games that not very demanding for GPU (Skyrim is a maximum) - it's not priority for me. I need high performance CPU, entry level GPU (such as GTX 1050, 1050ti, Quadro P1000, P2000) because i don't have a deal with complex 3D-modeling (but simple cases can occur). Ofcourse, I need a good cooling system and stability of working! Good battery and solid case are need too. Yes, I need exactly laptop. Lenovo ThinkPad P-series (now it's P52) and Dell Precision 75xx-series (now it's 7530) were always interesting for me, but have rather high price. Intel Core i7-8750H and NVIDIA Quadro P1000 are good for me, I think. So the question is does a workstations (such as ThinkPad P52 or Precision 7530) provide more stability and reliability of working compared to usual consumers laptops?

EDIT: I have gone with the Lenovo X1 Carbon. Lenovo's outlet had an amazing deal on a $2,000 spec for $1,200 brand new. Thanks for your help! Every time I look for this answer, people keep recommending larger format laptops and I cannot seem to find a review that has helped me figure out what computer is right for my specific use case and hardware desires. I've also read through some of the stickies on this forum, not can't get a clear guide to what I should get. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give! Size & Portability: I want a 13-14" inch laptop. Portability is key here. Power & Use: In addition to basic every day tasks, I will use this laptop for some graphic design, so it'll need to handle the following programs (in order from most to least critical): Illustrator, In-Design, Photoshop, After Effects/Premiere. I have a desktop for heavy loads, so this is more for when I am with a client and they want to tweak something or see an alternative layout, or if I need to do some basic work on a plane, or when I want to work at a coffee shop for the day. I am pretty set on having at least 16gb of RAM (dual channel, please), as I often have a lot of instances of chrome open while also running Illustrator and Photoshop simultaneously. As for the processor and GPU combo, this where I get lost. I have no idea what processor is really right for my use case. I feel like a dedicated GPU will help with some of my workloads, but I honestly cannot tell if something like intel or AMD's integrated solutions would actually be enough. Keyboard & Touchpad: Touchpad feel is REALLY important to me. The last laptop I had was a Mac, and I've never used another computer that felt so good to use. But I refuse to buy a Mac now. So instead, I want the most fluid, accurate pad possible on a Windows platform. And the buttons shouldn't shake, wobble, or otherwise be a nuisance to use. For the keyboard, my biggest concern is that I do NOT want mushy keys or a flexible chassis. I'd rather not have a number pad, and back-lighting is a plus. Screen: 1080p is fine (don't need 4k at this size). However, it absolutely needs to be bright and color accurate. I prefer a matte finish, thin bezels, and 144hz if possible, but those are not critical. FutureProofing I like to buy nice and buy once. I am not interested in budget items that will last me two years and then fall apart. I want to buy hardware that will last me several years without falling apart or getting bogged down by future applications. Battery: I cannot stand laptops that die after a couple hours. It doesn't have to go all day, but it needs to get me through most of it. Budget: Rather not spend more than $1,600. Doesn't mean I want to spend that much, but am willing to if that's what it takes.

Good afternoon Team, I am seeking some opinions on what CPU you guys and gals think would be better in a laptop, I will be using this for primaryily for Virtualisation (and other IT Pro stuff), maybe some light video and photo editing (family fun vids), and some light gaming/streaming with friends (1080p Screen), but not heavy on the latter. Most reviews I have seen on the i9 is for video editing, wondering what IT Pros are thinking? I know the i9 is 400mhz faster than the Xeon, I won't be using any ECC RAM, I don't know how the CPUs will be responding to the heavy virtualisation. Any education appreciated. i9-8950HK vs Xeon E-2176M Video card: Nvidia Quadro P2000 w/4GB GDDDR5 (1080p Screen) 32GB RAM NVME Hard drive (Laptop Dell Precision 5530) Thanks!

I'm looking for a mobile workstation for software development and running VMware. The machine will be used for my schoolwork. The required specs are a quad core i7 and 16gb of RAM. I'd also like a good keyboard. The trackpad doesn't matter quite as much, because i'll mostly be using a mouse. My budget is really no higher than 2000 EU after taxes. What are the best options on the market and why are they good options compared to others?

Hey all, I’m looking for a new laptop for work. The one they gave me really isn’t cutting it and I want to go to our IT guy with a recommendation for what I should get. Basic requirements are a fast quad-core, some type of dedicated graphics, a good keyboard, and decent portability. Also, it needs to not be too “gamery” as it needs to be approved on a PO and not embarrass me in a meeting. The programs I use are mostly CPU dependent and can run at 100% CPU usage for long periods while optimizing so decent cooling would be a plus. The programs do benefit from dedicated graphics to display the simulations but it isn’t super taxing. Being said, I would like decent graphics because I’d love to be able to game on it on the weekends or on long work trips. My first instinct is a Razer Blade or a good ThinkPad but there may be other good options out there so just looking for some good recommendations. Thanks!!

Hi all, My engineering curriculum is heating up and my Surface Pro 4 with Skylake i5 isn't doing the trick like I thought it would. Particularly, it struggles with Solidworks and Fusion 360. I've been in the market for a high performance or workstation laptop for some time, but I've been waiting for just the right one. Enter Dell Precision 5520 Anniversary Edition: http://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and-notebooks/new-precision-5520-anniversary-edition/spd/precision-15-5520-laptop/xctop5520hwuscaanv1 It's got everything - Quadro graphics, 7820HK, solid battery battery life, light enough to take to take to class every day, and is currently over $1,100 off - down to $1,999. It's also black and limited edition, which is badass. Why haven't I bought it already? The concern is that I don't need a new computer just yet and Coffee Lake 45W CPUs are coming to the XPS line next year, and are rumored to be 6-cores at 4.2GHz. If the Precision is the way to go, it means having last gen hardware (both CPU and GPU) in a couple months and buying before I'm ready. If I chose the XPS, I'll cut Solidworks modeling performance in half, lose the cool black finish (that I really like), and maybe save a couple of bucks, but have the latest and greatest crap. Thoughts? *edit - It's worth mentioning that the bulk of my CAD work will be done on a desktop anyway, and buying a desktop Quadro card is an option (a very expensive one).

I was thinking of building a new pc. I saw Linus's Tiny PC video then I thought of doing it, so more portability. Then i thought why not just buy a laptop? I will carry it around alot (hence being portable) but i should have an outlet all time. I will be doing some Heavy video editing and 3d graphics so at least maybe 8 gb of ram (or changable ram) and maybe 3 Ghz. My budget is around 1000$-2000$ USD. Thank you

Today Lenovo announced several new workstations on SIGGRAPH 2015 Conference and Exhibition. In those workstations, the 2 mobile workstations, the Thinkpad P50 and P70, are the most interesting ones, as they both featured new chips and next-generation hardwares. Thinkpad P70 Thinkpad P50 Firstly, these 2 notebooks will be the first of Lenovo's new line of notebooks, the Thinkpad P series. Lenovo ditched the old line of W series notebooks, and started a new line of mobile workstation with these 2 notebooks. The ThinkPad W550s is still available for purchase, but from the datasheet it seems there are no hardware upgrades for the W550s. Secondly, the P50 and P70 are 15.5" and 17" notebooks. They both featured Intel Xeon E3-1500M v5, the Xeon processor designed for mobile workstations, together with up to 64GB of DDR4 ECC ram (with 4 SODIMM Slots), and up to 1TB of PCIe storage. Also both notebooks will feature NVIDIA Quadro graphic cards, and 3 different type of IPS display: FHD display (300 nits), FHD Touch display (270 nits), and 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) display (300 nits),with 100% color gamut and X-Rite Pantone color calibration. (so somebody finally has made 4K panels for 17" notebooks! yeah! ) Both notebook also features Express card reader (34mm), Integrated 4-in-1 SD Card Reader, 802.11ac WiFi, a new dual fan cooling solution called "FLEX Performance Cooling", and etc. The dual Thunderbolt 3 ports on the P70 The dual fan "FLEX Performance Cooling" system Besides the screen size differences, the differences of the 2 notebooks are on ports and optical drive. The P70 features an optical drive, which can be swapped with HDD or SSD with Bay Adapter. Also the P70 features 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports, while the P50 only features 1 Thunderbolt 3 port. Unfortunately there are no USB 3.1 ports and HDMI 2.0 ports on both notebooks. *update: According to PC World's article, it seems there is a fingerprint reader on the P70, not sure if it is on P50 as well. The fingerprint reader on the P70."Lenovo’s other new piece of hardware on the P70 includes a new fingerprint reader that you press rather than swipe." According to the press statement from Lenovo, these 2 notebooks are scheduled to ship in Q4 2015, and pricing for the P50 begins at $1599, while the P70 begins at $1999.
