It's strange how both headphone jacks and expansion card slots have seemingly gone away on newer mobile phones. I can kind of understand in a lot of cases why the headphone jack is gone with the rise and advancement of wireless technologies for audio like Bluetooth, etc., but I liked using the jack for other things, ex. expansion recording microphone, Square payments device. Is it asking too much of a modern flagship Android-based phone for, at the very least, a microSD card slot AND regular updates to OS and security patches? Even on the newer Pixel devices and OnePlus devices I can get the updates but not the headphone jack or card slot. To that end, should I resign myself to spend $200 USD extra on the extra storage model (rather than $40-50 for a comparable microSD card) or is there something out there where I can get an unlocked phone with the current best-in-class or close to it CPU (ex. Snapdragon 865), card slot, and reliable support? Or is this conundrum basically the telecom industry and phone manufacturers collectively flipping me the bird?

There's probably someone out here that knows about this but instead of surfing through many websites that are wayyy too detailed, I decided to make an account on this. So my question is, when you buy a mobile phone from a network provider like EE (in the UK) your phone that you buy is locked to that network, so you can't get a new simcard into it unless you pay to have it unlocked. How does this lock work? Is it a hardware boundary or is completely controlled by software in your phone? Thanks in advance. xxx

Goog greetings to everyone! Just really need some good help on this one. My phone's camera glass cracked when I accidentally dropped it. Fortunately the module itself and the lens is fine. The only thing left is the adhesive and the glass covering the inner glass covering the camera module. I tried to search for different options, first I'm gonna find out if how much it costs for me to diy fix this using a tempered glass lens ( https://s.lazada.com.ph/s.q4pE ) liquid optical clear adhesive remover, and liquid optical clear adhesive to put it back. While my other option is to bring it to the apple service center or a local phone repair shop. Really need help on this one. Thank you!

Hello LTT Forums! My family changed service providers from T-Mobile to Xfinity Mobile, but when I tried to use my S9+ (purchased from Amazon as "factory unlocked" with Amazon as the seller), my IMEI comes up as incompatible. I was told it had to do with 3G or something by the rep, but their forums said that they do not accept any models with "U1" at the end. Is there anyone here who is knowledgeable in the field that can help me understand what is the truth? From what I understand, my S9+ is 4G LTE capable and is no different physically than any other S9+ sold by Xfinity or Verizon. Also, if I take my activated SIM from my new iPhone 7 and put it into my Galaxy S9+, will it work fine or will there be any issues? I was told by one rep that both phones would brick, and another told me that the quality on my S9+ would be lower than standard. I know this is the ultimate first world problem, but I saved up for the S9+ and I am really attatched to it. I appreciate any help and can offer any additional information as needed. Thank you.

A friend of mine is worried that her old phone's virus will get carried over to her new phone if she transfers the files. Is this something that can happen on mobile phones? And is it best to transfer the files using a USB and adapter or SD card or via a cloud storage solution like Google Drive or Mega? Is there an online cloud storage app that checks files for viruses as they upload/download?

I know this might be old news but I just found out the Vertu company hasn't been doing too well. I don't know what people (who still own Vertu phones) are going to do since they'll have limited support (I assume) and how will they fix their phones if it gets damaged (yikes). I personally myself don't own a Vertu phone never made had the money and even if I did I could never justify coughing up roughly $6,000 or $10,000 (at minimum) for a phone that felt like a fancy overdone Nokia 8800 (my dad owned the carbon edition). Anyways back to the topic at hand, The Telegraph a states that, According to The Financial Times The owner Murat Hakan Uzan (a Turkish exile living in Paris) intends to keep the company. This seems unlikely when according to Digital Trends states that: According to Digital Trends, the problems don't end there: According to Digital Trends, there is a legal battle between the former owner (Gary Chen) and the new owner (Mr Uzan). The news is pretty short (and sweet): Article from Ars Technica In short, HTC sold a majority of its phone division to Google for a little more than a billion dollars. Google officially announced the deal's closure (completion) today. Google wants HTC mobile employees to augment their existing mobile division. Both the Google Pixel (Standard and XL) and Google Pixel 2 were a collaborative effort between Google's mobile team and HTC. The article states that by purchasing part of HTC, Google wants to improved control in the design process and more unity between the pixel phones. In other words, Google wants to be more independent from third-parties. They don't want to rely on companies like HTC (and LG) to design and manufacture their phones. So why did HTC sell such a large portion of their company? HTC is hemorrhaging money. Their mobile division has had a couple big flops with the HTC One M9 and especially the HTC U Ultra. As a former HTC One M8 owner and a current Google Pixel 2 user, I'm extremely excited about this deal. I don't know if it will help Google improve the quality of their phones, but it at least implies that Google will continue the Pixel series. Maybe Google will even be able to compete with the Samsung Galaxy and IPhone (in market share) in a couple years...

I get my own voice looping many a time when I call people or they call me on my smartphone. I have a 4G SIM now, but this problem has been around since the very first time I got a phone in 2011 and even after going through multiple SIMs (few 2G, few 3G) and phones (even windows phone if that counts as a phone :d). One thing is consistent among all the hardware and SIM card changes, the carrier, Voda fakin fone. I mostly end up hearing only the voice input from my own phones microphone and not the user on the other end at all. Can I do something on my side to solve this issue, its so annoying. At times its 3 calls in a row and it gets frustrating trying to explain to the person on the other end what the issue is. Vodafone is almost ruining my life.

Source: Dixons Carphone Dixons Carphone has announced that the company will close all 531 standalone Carphone Warehouse stores across the UK in an effort to focus selling mobile devices and connectivity through its shop-in-shops in other Currys PCWorld stores physically and online. This comes after the company have analysed consumer habits in regards to how customers buy mobile devices, and insight that these standalone stores that were formerly spread across the UK represented only 8% of Dixons Carphone's UK selling space. This will hugely affect the employment rate of Carphone Warehouse, and Dixons Carphone has detailed in their blog post that they are expected that almost 40% - or 1,800 - affected employees will take new internal roles within the business (presumably migrated into Currys PCWorld stores as those are dime a dozen - with 2,900 redundancies with the new business shift. However, Dixons Carphone advises that they will try their best to recoup the scars that closing all their physical stores might entail. All is not lost however, as Carphone Warehouse will remain in the big stores such as Currys PCWorld, which is essentially the UK's version of Microcenter. Customers wil still be able to get customer support and connectivity services within these bigger stores that envelope the current Carphone Warehouse ones. The Group Chief Executive wrote a small footnote on the post, detailing what incentivized the change in business, detailing that the behavioral changes in consumer habits, Dixons Carphone must shift gears in their physical stores in order to turnover more profit for the business. Personally I am not with Carphone Warehouse, nor is anyone that I know, but I do have a particular soft spot for the employees affected. It has to be a hard time for them with COVID-19 axing their chances of employment after this. Currys PCWorld stores are huge and I'm sure a good majority of the affected employees will be able to migrate stores confidently.

SafetyFirst Samsung's Note 7 has been under a lot of heat lately *badumtiss* The recent string of user sub reports have claimed that the galaxy not 7 have caught fire while being charged or while it was left on charging overnight , Obviously airlines take firehazard seriously , last thing you want is a fire hazard at 35000 feet above with the nearest LZ miles away , Currently 3 aviation firms tell passengers to avoid using or charging devices due to concerns about fire-prone batteries that could explode & could cause chain reaction customers will still be able to bring the phones on flights, the ban extends to the phones being plugged in to flight entertainment systems where USB ports are available. Most of the affected smartphone has been call backed by the company firm directly, but it's been slow progress in asian region as earlier reported , , there are still reportedly between 1 million and 2.5 million devices in the wild that hasnt been returned or recalled even tho the company issued a ful refund of the returned product Samsung Australia said in a statement that it had liaised with Qantas and Virgin Australia following the recall. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is considering its response to the Samsung recall and “working on guidance related to this issue” Most probably they will soon issue some form of warning to users of the Note 7 @bear-in-the-air : Don't take your note 7 with you when you're in the air Post Your thoughts on this down below! After watching LTT videos for a couple of years now and I have noticed that for a while that phones and some laptops, namely the XPS 15 and then today the blade stealth (at least on vessel, I haven't checked youtube) have all come from or have at least been passed through DBrand before getting to Linus. Are the products themselves being supplied by DBrand themselves, or is Linus having them "fed through" DBrand to get a cool looking version. I'd find it weird that he would request or get offered review samples of products from a skinning company over the product manufacturer. Is it purely an advertisement thing or have all mobile product companies decided to boycott LTT (The latter of two is a joke before people take this too seriously) I know that almost all people are unlikely to know the answer to this (Unless it's been mentioned on social media and I've just missed it) so here's to hoping that one of the LTT team members reads this post. Also anyone else hoping for a HP spectre review sample? Maybe even in a DBrand skin

Hello, I know this is a pretty big suggestion, and would obviously require a lot of work to be put into place, but I, and I believe many other people, would enjoy a Linus Tech Tips Forums App for mobile phones. Yes, you can access the forums from a browser from a mobile device, but having a dedicated app would be really useful in my opinion. Thanks!

Hi, I am currently looking to either upgrade my PC or get the Moto 360. I eventually want both, and by the end of the year (hopefully), I will be able to get that. What I want to know is what should I get first, or in case I can't afford both. I'm only looking to spend £100-£150 on my PC anyway, so it won't be a massive upgrade, and I can currently run new games like GTA V. Thanks

I'd like a new phone in the £200-300 range. The main requirements for me are 1. Large Screen 2. No Bloatware (preferably stock) 3. Good Camera 4. Good clean looks The original 1+ fits this, or at least I think it does. The 1+2 also does, but are there any other ones that fit these criterion? Obviously, cheaper is better, but I'm willing to pay more for a better phone as a whole. Thanks.

Hi Linus Media group and Forum members, I've been a avid watcher of the Techtips and Techquickie YouTube channels and over the years I have come to find that you are a pretty big fan of sound quality and high resolution audio. On to the question at hand, my father recently forward me an e-mail containing and Kickstarter for what essentially looks to be a mobile device DAC! Pretty cool I think, they have one for Android (Lollipop exclusive) and one for Apple devices, I don't know if there are any competing product out there like this yet and I'd be interested in getting better sound out of my mobile devices. The company looks legit and the product seems promising but I'd be interested in your feedback! Thank for reading this and your much appreciated feedback. Samsung Galaxy A7 images are apparently leaked & it kinda looks good is a thin, all-metal, mid-range galaxy smartphone, if this turns out to be true it's Samsung's slimmest model ever, and also sports afull HD 1080p screen, The apparent leak could be a possible hype stunt since samsung is loosing tracton in markets on it's mid range mobile phones everywhere other than the US, They are cutting sales on the smartphonemarket from next year br a whopping 30% on mid range/low end phones. Specs List Screen Size : 5.5” 1080p OLED, CPU : 64-bit Snapdragon 615 CPU, Memory : 2GB of RAM, 16GB (non-upgradeable) memory and Camera : 12MP main camera/5-megapixel rear cameras. Weight : 133 grams Dimensions : 150.9 x 75.9 x 6.3 mm Supported : 900MHz,1800MHz,1900MHz,800MHz,Band 41,2555-2575 MHZ,2575-2635 MHZ,2635-2655 MHZ,Band 3 The device will join the likes of Samsung Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 in the company’s new mid-range family. Here's some larger image: device looks rather snuggly imo love the slim form factor, What are your opinions on this? poat your comments & rants down belooooooooooe... The popular messaging application, What'sApp now has over 400 million monthly users. http://www.theverge.com/2013/12/19/5228656/whatsapp-now-has-over-400-million-monthly-users It seems as though these free messaging applications (such as this and BBM) are becoming really, really popular because of the exorbitant cellular charges. I personally have friends in India, a majority of whom use What'sApp because sending a text message is so darn expensive. I think they talked about this subject at length on The Tek too.
