Hello all, I recently bought brand new Mac for the first time new and it set me back like $2800. I am using as I finish up the last year and a half of college so it will defiantly be moved around a lot and I am trying to decide whether the apple care plus for $150 is worth it. On one hand I already spend a lot on the laptop so I want it to last if something happens, but on the other hand, I have never broken any of the other laptops I have used both in high school or college, asus gaming laptop and Lenovo thinkpad p1. Do y’all have any experience with apple care plus good or bad, and are there other inusurances that work do same thing for cheaper? I am really just looking for recommendations on what I should do. I have one day left to purchase the apple care plus but just can’t decide. thanks!

Hi guys, would like your thoughts on which to laptop to get, the XPS 15 or the newest MBP 15. Since there's been so much shit going around regarding the pricing/hardware of the newest MBP, I would like to make clear: -Price is not a constraint. -Ports are not a problem. Yes, I use USB type A only but I will make do with adapters for Type C. -Don't care about aesthetic features like the infinity display, touch bar, etc. I am concerned with only 3 things: performance, portability, and durability. Laptop will be purchased in the US and used in Asia. For this reason I need a solid machine that will not break down or give me problems, especially since I cannot avail warranty here. Both laptops are very portable and have excellent battery life, so that condition is satisfied. I am however worried about durability when it comes to Dell. I have read so many horror stories about their machines breaking down within the first month of use, if they don't come with manufacturing defects in the first place. Not sure about the state of Apple machines as I have never owned one and don't follow them much. My use will be engineering (MATLAB and electronic design/testing softwares) and personal use. Light gaming, if any at all. Was worried about things not working out on the latest Mac OS but I was delighted to find that Windows can be dual booted using Bootcamp (any many other ways) and it works near flawlessly (or at least it did for whatever reviews I read. if it doesn't work well, please let me know). Been leaning towards the MBP simple because I cannot take the risk of getting a/multiple bad XPS('). What are your thoughts, LTT?

Dear all, Bored at work i thought of this, the dash charger that comes with the one plus 5, is advertised (and does) charge your oneplus 5 from 0% battery to 63% in half an hour. Dash Charging uses USB-C and... WOW I think to myself so does the new mac book pro 2017, what would happen if you dash charge your Mac Book Pro 2017? Can someone do this (please don't sue me, I can't afford a mac book pro, and/or I don't want to buy you a $20 charger, because i told you to do this) I couldn't find anyone who had. Just Curious

Operating System: I love Mac OS's convenient transparent interface, lack of malware/driver issues/other problems and some of its exclusive software. I believe it comes with El Capitan but it is immediately upgradable to Sierra. Price: ~$500 used and plus ~$100 with upgrades. Pricy for an older laptop. However, for Mac standards, its the best value you will find for a Mac computer. Size/Weight: I have the 13" model. It's very compact in width/length. Average in height. The weight is light by 2012's standards, but average by today's standards. Overall portable. Resolution: 800p display is really outdated. My biggest gripe. But as a partial fix, with an HDMI/Thunderbolt adapter, it can be displayed on a television in 1080p. Chassis: The aluminum on the top accrues light scratches over time, but the interior aluminum is flawless (and feels premium). Since, we only interact with the interior, it's a positive overall. Battery: For basic tasks, it lasts 5-7 hours. However, with turbo boost, the power drains quick (about under 3 hours). Ration carefully. Processing: It handles almost all everyday tasks with ease such as MS Office, browsing and so on. It starts to chug if browsing 10+ tabs and other apps, but at least it can. It can run Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro well enough for light to medium editing/mixing. Not to a professional degree, but at least it can run them. Gaming: Skyrim is barely playable at absolute lowest settings. It can handle older games and emulation of classic consoles, but it's not for gaming. Storage: Comes with 500 GB HDD and a DVD player. However, you can upgrade either to an SSD, which is the best way to boost this machine's performance. RAM: Only comes with 4GB but can be upgraded. 16 GB is possible perhaps, but 8GB is plenty for a laptop. Ports: 2 USB3's, Ethernet, Thunderbolt, SD card reader. A good option for those who disagreed with Apple's removal of ports in recent years. Keyboard: Excellent. Backlighting is a plus. Keys are raised but thin. Smooth. Firmly adhered, easy to press but offers a perfect amount of tactile feedback. Trackpad: The soft aluminum texture, firm always responsive click. I never thought I'd like a trackpad better than an external mouse, but I love this trackpad. As a 5 year old laptop, it is very dated in some aspects. However, at the end of the day, in spite of the flaws, it's been one of the best laptops I've ever owned. It's great for school/work, browsing and some creative applications, with great notebook-like qualities and capability to perform more powerful tasks when needed. The keyboard, trackpad, UI and build quality all make my experience for reading/typing and using a wide variety of applications enjoyable and hassle free. 8/10

Ok so i got me and my fammily a NAS for christmas, but what OS do i run. iv heard that FreeNAS wants 8GB of RAM and iv got 4GB so i dont really know what to do, here are the specs of the microserver: CPU: Athlon II NEO N36L 1.3GHz RAM: 4GB(dont know the speed or brand) HDD: 2.5" 1TB HDD i was thinking of running the OS of a 4GB USB drive seeing as i saw a lot of people do that and i had one around so the OS needs to be no bigger the 4GB. i was told FreeNAS was the best around but also that it needed 8GB RAM and sticking more RAM in this machine is right now not an option. the NAS needs to be accessed from two OSX computers, two windows 10 computers and one windows XP computer and preferably also my android phone but thats not that important. thanks for any help and any replies

So i formatted my mac because i had performance issues and after i reinstalled el capitan i installed malwarebytes and then avast, should i keep them both or will there be a significant performance hit? I play CS on my mac so i'm wondering if there would be a fps hit and also a hit to battery life. If i were to remove one of them i would be removing malwarebytes.

So i have great luck with apple products ( every single iphone i have owned since the 5s needed to be replaced, except for my 6s plus) and i noticed when i plug in my charger to my pro 13 which is 3 months old, the magsafe light doesn't light up the very first time i plug it in. I've been able to repeat this day after day and i can't seem to figure out what's wrong with it, both the charger and port are relatively clean, and i do not abuse my charger, it rarely even gets unplugged from my surge protector, is what i am experiencing a common issue with magsafe chargers and is there a fix or to i have to go the apple store and talk to a genius to resolve it? thanks.

The new 15" macbook pro has fast quad core cpus in a very thin case. Has anyone tried themselves or seen a video online where they put a full load on all 4 cores and show the cpu frequency vs time?

Hey Guys, So I have a little bit of a problem with my gaming setup which I'm rocking in a city where I come to work every 3 weeks for 3 weeks. My first and major headache is that I have at my disposal an i5 MacBook Pro (TouchBar) from late 2016 - the sad dual-core one. For making it more graphically endowed I have gotten a Razer Core X with RX580 inside of it with an external screen. In order to run the game of choice - PUBG (no laughs there please) - I needed to create a nice external drive with Windows on it with Bootcamp drivers (not really hassle-free experience). Now I had luck running many games quite well, but PUBG seems to be quite heavy on a CPU which basically bottlenecks entire setup. So the help that I'm looking to get from you folks is - how to make things run a little bit better overall with a very tight budget (something like 200EUR - I'm Europe-based) and without the actual opportunity to sell any of the current parts :( I was looking into optimizing somehow cooling capacities of the MBP, but I think it won't do enough... So here it is - please help me the great LTT Community! Cheers, Janusz

Hi guys, So i managed to get a Macbook Pro 2012 laptop for ~$50 on gumtree and i just got it. It powers on and all but doesn't have a bottom cover and is missing the wifi/bluetooth ribbon cable thingy (it was removed by previous owner). I want to connect this to my network using ethernet and use it as a simple web browsing machine BUT...whenever i try going into recovery mode (as it didn't come with a hdd, i bought a 120gb ssd for this), it doesn't detect my ethernet and asks for my network which it can't find as there is no hardware connected. Does anyone here know how to use the internet recovery feature to re-install macos (hopefully capitan or something etc.) whilst using an ethernet connection? Thanks in advance!

Hey just a tip, I recently lose my USB-C charging cable, And the problem is to find other usb-c to usb-c to charge at full 86w instead of only 65w ( I have a 15" MBP 2016), I already tested Maxell, Ugreen, Huawei and other brands, so a bought a overprice apple cable again, the problem was that is very short ( like 90 cm or 2 ft), anyway I was with a friend to a Xiaomi Store ( I'm in Peru so here we have Xiaomi stores, Samsung store but not Apple Store) and I notice a 1.5 meters cable ( like 3.5 ft) I tested and it run at 86W power!!, its very cheap( like 10 $), and the built quality is very good, so if you lose ur usb cable, test this one.

Hey guys i just wanted to ask owners of macbook pros in this community if how often do u upgrade to the current gen mbp? I’ve purchased my MBP 15” mid 2015 last 2016 with discrete gpu and it’s working really good for me and am not looking to upgrade just yet even if the current refresh bumps up the core count to 6 with ddr4 ram as i dont have enough funds. I just wanna know if some mbp users are gonna upgrade with the new refresh or not and share them why thanks!!

This is probably the wrong kind of website to be asking Mac and Apple questions on, but I'm desperate, I'm not getting any replies on Apple Forums; so if there are any Apple people or Apple insiders on here, I'd appreciate some insight/help. So, I was given a CRU (Customer Replacement Unit) at the Apple store because I've been having Kernel Panic issues. They gave me a brand new computer and even gave me a receipt for it. My question is, does Apple treat CRUs like new purchases, and do they fall under the 14 day return policy? Is there any way I can return it for a refund? They did not give me the entire package, just the MBP itself, because I already had the charger. My plan is to use the money from that to get an XPS 13 Thank You in Advance

Hi! I’m using a 2010 MBP currently with Sierra again. I got the laptop without a hard drive. Thanks to my friend I was able to get a bootable USB with High Sierra on it. I put an SSD in and the installation went fine! After setting it up, I went through the settings and noticed that under “settings” the trackpad settings were not available. It says “connect trackpad” even though I’m using it and it works fine and is clicky. the laptop had a bloaded battery before, so several people online suggested that the inability to access trackpad settings is due to potential damage to trackpad ribbon cable. Because I didn’t like the performance on this 2010 machine, I downgraded to Sierra which I installed freshly, no backup used. After setting Sierra up, I did get into the trackpad settings and were able to customize the three and four finger gestures. Now I have 8gb of ram in it and thinking of upgrading to HS again through the app store this time though. Not via bootable usb. Will the trackpad settings be available after the upgrade to High Sierra? Why weren’t they in the first place? The ribbon cable seems fine, since it works under Sierra. anyone experienced a similar issue? Or would you even suggesting upgrading to HS or staying on Sierra? 2010 MBP, 248GB SSD, 2,4 GH, 8GB ram. Thanks very much!

Ok so I know that eGPU can be technically done with Mac but I'm curious to hear is anyone has done it and had good use from it. I will say that my current 13" Mid 2012 MBP is a warranty replacement and is only 3.5 years old but I would like to get more power out of it instead of having to buy a new Laptop. I'm not wanting to play games on it, I have an XBox for games, I do Graphic Design work as well as 3D modeling/Animation and game coding from time to time and would like to be able to get a bit more power from it. I am running 12gb of ram and plan on getting a SSD soon as well. I appreciate any help.

So at work I just got an LG 34UM88 monitor. It's a 34" ultrawide with Thunderbolt by LG. I seem to randomly get screen flicker when it is connected via Thunderbolt to my Macbook Pro running El Capitan v10.11.4. The MBP is a mid-2015 i7, 16gb ram, 512gb pcie ssd with an AMD M370X GPU. I've tried resetting SMC and PRAM. I'm using an official Apple Thunderbolt cable. Automatic graphic switching is disabled. I'm not sure if the problem is with the display or the mac or possibly the cable. The screen just cuts out and back on randomly. Sometimes it will go 30 minutes without a flicker, other times it will flicker 2-3 times in 5 minute span. I've tried googling around but I don't seem to get much results since the display is fairly new. I have a keyboard and Magic Trackpad 2 connected to the monitor via USB, those devices do not cut out which makes me believe the Thunderbolt cable is fine. Any help would be appreciated. Hello guys! I'm working on a battery mod for my rMBP 13'3. So far this will be my purchase list: Poweradd Pilot Pro 32000mAh http://www.ipoweradd.com/poweradd-pilot-pro-32000mah-battery-charger-for-ipad-air-ipod_p1273.html Magsafe 2 cord http://www.banggood.com/45W-60W-85W-AC-Power-Adapter-Repair-Cord-Cable-For-Macbook-Magsafe-2-p-914322.html But before purchasing the items i want to hear a few things. The "original" apple charger is 16.5v but the batterypack is only able to give DC 9V,12V,16V,19V,20V/4.5A Would it be okay to just apply 16v, when the original DC adapter supply's the PC with 16.5v? If so - I've got a 32000mAh/118.4Wh batterypack for about 100$.
