  1. Budget (including currency): US$800 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: GIMP, Light adobe suite, Ardour, storage Other details: Hello! I am new to the forum but knew I needed to stop by after the recent LTT video, "He Spent 3 YEARS Begging me for a PC. Good Luck Finding it!" I have been hoping to build a new PC to share with my partner in the Fractal Terra for a while now, and it looks like I finally have got the money together to do it! Linus's build (below) in the case seemed to be pretty good for what I need, other than the price. As I have a restricted budget, I really need to stay around US$800. This is my first PC build for myself, but I have plenty of experience working with servers (ex-IT worker lol) so I'm confident I can build in a mini itx case. My PCs for the last couple years have been random 10 year old thinkpads that I keep limping along, so I've been very limited. My husband even more so - he has an ancient chromebook lol. I need a build that is decent with art software like GIMP and Adobe suite (this is for my husband, who creates digital art), can function as a basic coding workstation (I code in Java, C++, Python, etc - I don't do anything too intensive as I've left the IT world but I would like to be able to mess around), obviously can handle the browsing the internet, can handle a DAW (Ardour), and can function as a 2TB storage stop-gap for my music until I save up to build a NAS. I have a couple 1tb hard drives scattered around, so I don't need any more than 2tb. I game very rarely, and it's always games like Stardew and Minecraft (am a girl lol) so I'm not worried about that. I plan to dual-boot some debian-based distro for my side of the PC, (big fan of antiX for thinkpads, but will find something a bit more solid for the PC) and my husband will likely get a Windows license for his side at some point (therefore that's not part of my budget). I don't plan on buying monitors or other peripherals, already have a decent starter set. Will upgrade them later, and will probably check in again at that point :) If you have a question about 10-year-old tech, I've got you. However, I don't know anything about the current landscape of PC parts. Therefore, I'm a bit lost - I would love help on trimming the cost of Linus's build to maximize savings, while also investing a tiny bit more into storage. And of course, it all has to fit in the Fractal Terra. Approx. of LTT's Build (US$1233.69): https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tdTZ7R Thanks all so much for the help, it is so appreciated, sophietlav
  2. My laptop had an NVME with windows 11 installed, I took that nvme out and started using it on my pc(with a frehs windows install), then I toom out the SATA SSD my pc had and installed in into the laptop(currently the only disk in it) then I thought I should maybe try installing some linux distro and I tried linux mint but it didnt boot and instead I was getting booted into some file explorer which shows the SSD named as NO VOLUME LABEL and sone stuff below and now I tried installing ubuntu, windows 10 but no matter what I try it just boots into this (image attached) menu, I've tried restoring my bios to default but no luck, would greatly appreciate some help on this because now I have no idea what is going on and I need my latop in 2 days for a travel. thanks in advance
  3. I'm used to using automount, and it's reinforced by the fact that I use it in my job. Just curious to know which one you prefer, and if there's performance benefit of one over the other?
  4. I have an MSI GP66 Leopard laptop that I want to install PopOS on, but I have to disable secure boot. I can go into BIOS and change the option to have secure boot, but when I save changes and reset and go back into BIOS, it is re-enabled. If I try to reset my keys to default, I get an error that tells me that "secure boot is locked out" and it won't let me change it. I've even tried setting an admin password for the BIOS and after I reboot (I set it to check every time) it reset to not having a password. Do I just have a faulty BIOS? Or is there something I'm missing?
  5. Hey yall. I’m new to Linux, and ended up following SomeOrdinaryGamer’s guide for setting up Linux mint 21.3 with the Cinnamon DE. I’ve been really enjoying how easy and usable it is with the exception of *literally anything not included in the software manager app* For example, I tried to download an indie game on itch.io that runs natively on Linux. I follow the instructions on the site which was to extract the folder and simply run the file, but when I do that it asks me what app I want to launch it with. How am I supposed to know? It was a .ags file. I wish I could say this is the only time it’s happened but it’s not. I tried to install openrgb, again it asks me what app I want to open the file with. I have no clue. I’m used to just clicking on applications and having windows open it with whatever makes sense without input from me. What am I missing here? I just don’t understand how your average joe like me is supposed to have all of these things to open up different files on tap without knowing anything about what should be required. Do I need to update my software manager? Do I need to install some packages? I have no idea. I want to continue my overall good experience so far on Linux but this is particularly frustrating since I feel like I’m basically not able to do anything that’s not in the included software manager.
  6. Hello guys, I am planning a switch to Arch when my new SSD comes in, I have been testing it for over 4 months now, and to my relief it is actually getting worse performance than my Ubuntu 22.04 LTS install for the first time in Quake Champions which is one of the games I love to play in my free time. On Ubuntu it gets 300FPS (300 being the cap which is the maximum cap for that game) and on Arch (as of recently) it gets 67-80FPS which is really unexpected, as there has been no change in the software I run on Arch (unless you include the updates I did). By the way I just did a sudo pacman -Syu and the system is up to date as of 11th April. My GPU is an Nvidia card, I use proprietary drivers on both my machines, most specifically the 550 drivers (Arch has the 550.67 drivers and Ubuntu has the 550.54 drivers). My DE on Arch is Plasma 6 and GNOME on Ubuntu. I use Wayland on both systems and it pretty much is the only thing that can help me, a person who has multiple mixed refresh rate monitors. Especially with the Explicit DRM Sync merge and the upcoming 555 drivers implementing Explicit Sync in May (according to Nvidia at least) the future looks really bright. Do you have any suggestions on what may be the reason of these problems? Also, if you do have fixes you implemented or you know of tell them. Thank you very much for reading. If you have any questions regarding my configuration, do not hesitate, put them in the comments. Here are the clone posts I made on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/1c1e9n2/has_anyone_noticed_any_noticable_performance/ https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1c1cg1p/arch_gets_less_fps_200fps_difference_on_my/ Here is my post on the GamingOnLinux forums: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/forum/topic/6057/page=1/#r41987
  7. Summary Nearly 20 years after the debut of LiMux, the project where the city of Munich, as well as Lower Saxony, migrated the majority of their computer systems from Microsoft Windows to a custom Linux distribution before being cancelled in 2017, someone else is now ready to take on the challenge. This time, it's the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Citing the goals of independence, sustainability, and security, the state is planning on migrating its 30,000 computers to Linux and other open source software. Quotes My thoughts I hope them the best. Chipping away at Microsoft's business monopoly is always a good thing. 8. —-SKIP TO THE ANYWAY IF THIS IS IRRELEVENT—- Hello all, I’m sure this isn’t an uncommon question but what’s the most profitable software or service used to mine? just looking to make some passive income. My PCs are on 24/7 and all hardlined through my house. I doubt thru-put is relevant but my office has my modem, main pc, and an 8 port switch (the modem has 2 Ethernets, ports cannot be bonded/aggregated) then two lines coming up from the basement, one’s connected to my server for file transfer among other things and other to a 16 port switch. from that switch we hit the ten ethernets on my server - yes a real server, a 2U rack (U2?). Then it goes to my living room which has a 8 port switch. all of them are tp-link unmanaged switches, same model except the 16. That guy is weird because I can’t do anything with it, that is to say punching in the IP, I can’t access a login page or change anything (found manual online, Deff can’t) anyway here’s the specs, not including the handful of laptops that would probably be better off not mining, rather doing server stuff. Load balancing, ADDS, blah blah pc -5900x overclocked (sorta) to 4.3 steady, I won’t let it go higher cause yesterday my 1000w seasonic suddenly pooped outta nowhere as I was mining and doing stuff -asus/ROG crosshair viii WiFi (whatever’s on their site, x570 NOT the dark hero) -asus strix 4090 RTX OC 24g -PCI 1x to 16x, xfx quik amd 6600 8gb -xfx merc amd 6700 xt 12g -dell nvidia quadro 4000 rtx (Nicehash says dell, I dono, sure lol) ^these are in order as placed in the motherboard. Config can’t be changed as the cards are 2 slots wide except for the quadro, which has to stay on the bottom otherwise my headers aren’t accessable -4x Corsair vengeance (I think, I forget cause I bought diff ram due to the QVL) but I do know it’s 18cl, 3600mhz and 16 gig each putting us at 64 total. All we’re hand picked as I wanted nearly matching serials and most of all made in the same country -2x Samsung 980 pros, 1tb. Main drive is on the top slot, obviously. The other is used as a global spare for my RAID setup -8x Samsung uhm… 870s, 1tb each ^4 are on raid 10, 4 global spares including the NVMe. Hey, had data loss before, won’t happen again! -seasonic 1000w bronze whatever, that’s in the case (anyone wanna buy a 1500w platinum / Corsair? Hsx1500i, something look it up on their site. It’s the EU version, won’t get into why except apparently it’s more efficient) -another PSU, a “game max” 1050 bronze. The seasonic didn’t have enough ports for the 4090 AND the rest of the cards ^that config is well, pretty logical. Seasonic is powering the motherboard, 2 cpu headers and the 4090 the ”gamemax” is ONLY powering the other gpus, the riser, and the SSDs should also mention I’m not daisy chaining any power. So that little guy with 2x six pin plug? Just using one plug for each card NOT both the server has 394gb of ram? Something crazy, 24x dimms, all Samsung ram (I think) again same serials, close enough and all same country/year/date of manufacture. It’s Deff DDR4, forget the speed who cares 2x intel Xeon 6790s? I forget, long story. 2.4ghz, I beleice 8 cores and 16 threads each for sake of this post, won’t get into the storage as it’s irrelevant. 8x iscsi (right?) and a plethora of other drives via usb, I know there’s 6 sata SSDs in there. Plus I have a arourus (?) asus something or other that houses 4x Kingston furies (or rampages, whatever was the fastest) at 1tb. Yes, transfer speeds are bleeping crazy, a gb a second from the iSCSI raid setup yeah their all on raid, each drive aside from the usb 3 ones. Can’t lose data! ANYWAY Nicehash is pulling in about 4$ a day between the server, 4 GPUs and my cpu its all water cooled, overkill water cooled. Ain’t getting into that lol. I have a 500ml/dc5 pump, 1L “fish tank” with another dc5 just helping the top radiator circulate water. It’s using the drain plugs so it’s somewhat not in the loop. That’s connected to a 420mm by 60mm (yep) pulling air out with 3x thermal take 140s. Whatever the fastest fans are, 2000rpm. They’re like 80$ a pop, something crazy Custom water blocks for the motherboard, 4090 and 6700 couldn’t find any for the 6600 (really it don’t need it) or the quadro. THAT needs one, she’s a beast! so without the 4090 going I lose like 3$. Kinda strange cause before I had it, I swear I was pulling in 3$ or so just with the server/6700/6600/4000 ANYWAY to the point whats the most profitable service, don’t know too much about mining so apologies if I’m a dummy. Nicehash I’ve seen ads for so I went for it. I look on forums and ppl say use XMrig. Ok that’s fine and dandy but…. Don’t I need a service to manage my junk? Like my wallet, it deposits idk every 4 hours. if not, how do I step away from Nicehash assuming their taking a fee of some kind? should I sideload nicehashOS? Maybe Ubuntu or Kali (it’s lightweight that’s why I mention it). I’m assuming I can’t use virtual machines and have direct IO with my cards then as far as the overclocking goes (nice hash settings OR manually), which route to go? If I’m mining I won’t be using the pc at all, so that could serve as a reliable stress test. Leaving cpu where it is, I do anything more it’ll blow up as I’m at 86c then the “extra parameters” - what else can I do if anything to increase profits? If that isn’t related, what’s it for? Nicehash just says “go” and makes it foolproof, if I can utilize the extras, sure. Maybe a cheat sheet would help? oh and is there a cheat sheet as far as overclocking my cards go? Say overclock-cheating.com, look up my 4090 and bam, there’s a starting point? the quadro won’t get overclocked at all, at 100% load I’m at 86c, any more and it’s useless in hashing also any other relevant information or education would be great. I suck up knowledge like a sponge when it comes to IT stuff OH OH, as it’s setup now, pump, 2 360s (one 60mm), then my cpu motherboard block, the 420x60 on top, then a slim 120 (ran outta room lol), then 4090 to 6700 and pump inlet. ill be putting the pc back together today as it’s been an open case for months now. Don’t ask lol. I have a spare 140x60 I can put under the pump now that I took out the 1500w - too long for the radiator. Would it serve any benefit to go 4090 out, into the 140, out to the 6700 then into the pump? That 4090 kicks some heat, figure it couldn’t hurt. I’m using soft tubing and it would take maybe ten minutes to shove it in there. any knowledge/education would be awesome!!!!! whoop whoop, keep rockin peeps, thanks!!!
  9. Hi there, I have been considering switching to dual booting Linux & Windows on my desktop. I was wondering if there is anything important I should know before going through with this. I plan on using full drives for each OS. Here is my planned setup: 2TB NVME SSD for windows (mostly because games take up so much space) 1TB SSD for Linux 2TB HDD That can be shared between the two. All of those drives above are connected via SATA with the NVME drive being the exception. My largest concern would be the shared HDD between the two. Will I still be able to access data on both operating systems without the need of reformatting? In addition, would I have to worry about windows screwing with my connected Linux SSD? To provide more context, I planned on using either Fedora or Ubuntu with either KDE or LXQT. I am not new to Linux because I use it all the time when working with my home server, however this will be my first time using it in a desktop context. If you have another suggested distro for this type of setup, please let me know. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  12. Linux users have been unable to under-volt NVidia GPUs since the Kepler days when NVidia removed that facility from the System Management Interface (SMI). In essence, under-volting allows you to run a higher clock frequency at a lower GPU core voltage and thus at a lower heat load making GPUs more efficient. The same effect can be had by lowering the power limit and adding a positive Clock Offset. The issue with this approach is when a Work Unit (WU) checkpoints, or something else occurs which reduces the GPU load for a longish interval, when returning to activity the offset tends to apply to an already fairly high clock frequency typically causing the WU to fail. However, there is an often over-looked switch for the NVidia SMI that can be used to prevent this from happening. -lgc --lock-gpu-clocks= Specifies <minGpuClock, maxGpuClock> clocks as a pair (e.g. 1500,1500) that defines the range of desired locked GPU clock speed in MHz. Setting this will supercede application clocks and take effect regardless if an app is running. Input can also be a singular desired clock value (e.g. <GpuClockValue>). So one could do something like: nvidia-smi -pm 1 nvidia-smi -i 0 -pl 160 nvidia-smi -i 0 -lgc 1830,1980 DISPLAY=:0 XAUTHORITY=/run/user/121/gdm/Xauthority nvidia-settings \ -a [gpu:0]/GPUFanControlState=1 \ -a [fan:0]/GPUTargetFanSpeed=75 \ -a [fan:1]/GPUTargetFanSpeed=75 \ -a [gpu:0]/GPUPowerMizerMode=1 \ -a [gpu:0]/GPUGraphicsClockOffsetAllPerformanceLevels=75 to: Set Persistence Mode for all GPUs (so power limits "stick" across WUs) Set the Power Limit for GPU0 to 160W Set the Minimum GPU Core Clock to 1830MHz and the Maximum to 1980MHz. Enable manual fan control Set both fans for a Turing or later GPU to 75% (Pascal and earlier only have 1 fan control register which controls both fans) Set GPU0 to "Prefer Maximum Performance" Add a +75MHz (5 x 15MHz Turing "bins") GPU Clock offset
  13. I recently bought a BC-250 server blade as a project to play around with and I'm a bit at a loss, the software compatibility overall is pretty terrible, most Linux distributions not even booting up their installers properly, I managed to get Ubuntu server 20.04 running and I even managed to get the graphics drivers to install, which hadn't worked on Ubuntu desktop 20.04 or the newest version but even there the initialization failed, I've been wanting to get it running games to help make some mining hardware not ewaste but I've run into a bit of a brick wall and any help would be appreciated. I'm trying out some other Linux distributions while I write this to see if they have any luck Tldr It's a bc250, it uses a cut down Ariel/Oberon chip with a cyan skillfish GPU section. Windows drivers flat out don't exist as far as I can tell and the Linux ones don't seem to work, the furthest I've gotten is various states of failed initialization in Ubuntu server and would appropriate help from anyone who might be knowledgeable with the hardware or Linux in general. Thanks!

  15. Free and Open-source Alternatives to Common Programs Revision History 1.0 - Thread created 1.1 - Thread revamped with new info and added links. 1.2 - Added Index (placeholder) Introduction With the advent of SteamOS, a good portion of gamers will likely switch to using it for their gaming needs. It won't really be long before more games start supporting Linux natively; newer games will definitely be supporting it as early as 2014, older games are constantly being ported over. Gaming on Linux is gaining momentum, but what about other productivity tools? Windows is still the king of OS's due to the wide range of applications natively supported, from Office to Graphics tools to 3D modelling, CAD/CAM and many other areas. Most of these applications are proprietary and closed-source and won't run on Linux natively. The purpose of this topic is to highlight some of the many free and/or open-source alternatives to many proprietary Windows programs. Free doesn't necessarily mean open-source, and that difference will be highlighted where applicable. Open-source software isn't restricted to Linux only - many of them can be cross-platform. Many of them can also be cross-compiled from Linux source to run on Windows. Proprietary alternatives are only included for programs that are both low-cost and worth paying for. One caveat to be aware of: The programs listed are merely alternative options to proprietary tools. In some specific cases, they won't act as replacements for the paid programs, due to paid programs having a vastly superior feature set. However, for the average user, the free alternatives are more than adequate. I personally tend to look at what people have done using the free alternative and compare them to the paid option, comparing their capabilities and not their specific feature sets. Of course, this may change in the future, due to the open-source nature of most of these programs: the necessary functionality can be added in my anyone. So, let's begin! Index 1.0 - Microsoft Office 2.0 - Adobe Photoshop 3.0 - Adobe Illustrator 4.0 - Adobe Premiere/After Effects 5.0 - 3D Graphics (Modelling, Animation) 6.0 - Digital Painting 7.0 - Development Tools 8.0 - Desktop Recording/Streaming 9.0 - Media Player 10.0 - Gaming 11.0 - CAD/CAM/CAE 12.0 - Torrent Clients 13.0 - Instant Messaging/Chat Clients 14.0 - Email Clients 15.0 - Linux Terminal-based 16.0 - Antivirus 17.0 - PDF Tools 18.0 - Virtualization 19.0 - Miscellaneous Microsoft Office Perhaps the most widely used and adopted set of tools for productivity. There are, however, more than a fair share of free and open-source options that are on par with Office, with one key exception: the free alternatives aren't capable of saving to .docx or any of the newer Office formats, but they are capable of reading them. That's not a major problem though: it's recommended to use the older .doc format due to being easier to work with. PDF is also a far superior format for sharing documents. Open-source 1) OpenOffice.org - This is usually the first option to come to mind, and it's been around for a while. Contains all of the replacement tools for Office. However, as some of you already know, it's somewhat lacking in features. Cross-platform. 2) LibreOffice - a fork of OpenOffice, with a wider range of features, and is more updated. I personally use this instead of OpenOffice and it's amazing. Cross-platform. 3) KOffice/Calligra Suite - Built into KDE. It may be possible to install it as a standalone application with the necessary dependencies. Contains a wide range of tools for everything Office related. Some older versions of KOffice is available on Windows. 4) TexLive - Alternative for MS Word. Specifically useful for Scientific documents (LaTeX). 5) WPS - Formerly known as Kingsoft Office, WPS is a newly updated version. Runs on iOS, Android, Windows and Linux, and capable of working with .docx and .xlsx files (compatibility and formatting issues aside). Exports to PDF as well, much like LibreOffice. Freeware/Online 1) Google Drive - Can't say much more. Full range of Office tools online, seamlessly synced between devices. Google has also been promoting QuickOffice, which is a set of tools available on Mobile devices with Drive integration. 2) OneDrive - Microsoft's own set of online Office tools, similar to Google Drive. Adobe Photoshop High up on the list of productivity tools used by graphics designers and digital painters. Open-source 1) GIMP - widely seen as the best Photoshop alternative on Linux. It is also cross-platform. 2) GIMPshop - Similar to GIMP, both open-source and cross-platform. 3) Krita - part of Calligra Suite. It's primarily a digital painting program, which Photoshop is capable of. Linux only, with an experimental version available for Windows. 4) Scribus - Specialized tool for creating publications. Cross-platform. Freeware 1) Paint.NET - An advanced version of MS Paint, but contains many of the basic features found in Photoshop. Available on Windows only, as it depends on .NET Framework. Adobe Illustrator Perhaps the best Vector-based graphics tools. Photoshop has some vector capabilities, but Illustrator is far superior. Open-source 1) Inkscape - great replacement for Illustrator. Cross-platform as well. 2) LibreOffice Draw - part of the LibreOffice package. Cross-platform. 3) Karbon - integrated into KDE in the Calligra Suite, making it Linux only. However, there are ways of installing KDE packages on Windows. Should be able to install it without KDE with just the dependencies. 4) Xara Xtreme - Looks to be an excellent Vector-graphic editor. Available on Linux and Windows. Adobe Premiere/After Effects These two are generally combined as each performs a specific group of tasks. Premiere focuses on editing, while After Effects focuses on compositing and visual effects. Most open-source options combine these features into a single application - which is great. Open-source 1) Cinelerra - perhaps the best option available. There are two versions, a community maintained one as well as an official one. The community version is called cinelerra-cv and is available on most Linux distributions. Not cross-platform afaik. 2) Kdenlive - Similar feature set to cinelerra, but more along the lines of Premiere. Kdenlive is available on Windows through a VM image. 3) OpenShot - Another option instead of Cinelerra. Primarily on Linux, but can be cross-compiled on Windows with the right set of tools (Cygwin, etc). 4) Avidemux - Cross-platform and open-source. Very simple video editing, and encodes in multiple formats. 5) LiVES - Available on Linux and OS X. Similar feature set to Cinelerra. 6) Blender - primarily a 3D modelling program (will go into more detail below), but includes a non-linear video editor. Runs on python, which is cross-platform. Freeware 1) Lightworks - there's a free and premium version available. The free version is free forever. So far, Lightworks is Windows only. The Linux version is in beta. There are many other free video editors out there. A Google search will reveal at least 10 other options. Autodesk Maya/3ds Max, Cinema 4D 3D modellers have perhaps used these applications. In fact, Cinema 4D's R15 was just released (as of October 2nd, 2013). Open-source Blender. I'm not even going to bother mentioning other options for now, as I have yet to find an option that beats it. There are plenty of projects out there done using Blender (Sintel is a perfect example of a short movie made entirely in Blender). It does everything you could possibly expect from it, along the lines of Cinema 4D and all of the other paid applications. Best of all, it's free and fully open-source. Corel Painter Perhaps the best digital painting tool out there. Has the widest range of brushes, painting media, etc. Open-source 1) Krita - mentioned it already. One of the best free digital painting applications available. Has excellent support for Wacom tablets. 2) MyPaint - similar to Krita. Cross-platform. 3) Alchemy - more of a niche program. Great for random sketching, doesn't have an undo function. 4) Gimp Paint Studio - Set of tools integrated into Gimp to provide digital painting tools, brushes, etc. Development Tools (IDEs) Microsoft's Visual Studio is probably one of the most common proprietary options, with development environments for C, C++, C#, among many others. On the OS X side, there's Xcode for developing in Objective-C. This section will list some of the alternatives to using the paid programs. Open-source 1) Eclipse - In my humblest opinion, one of the best IDEs available. Free, completely open-source and extensible through plugins. I've personally set my installation of Eclipse to work with Python, C, C++, Java, Android, and PHP/MySQL, and that's barely scratching the surface of the amount of development environments that can be integrated into Eclipse through plugins. 2) Code::Blocks - Another open-source IDE primarily for C++, but has a plugin system to easily extend functionality. Cross-platform. 3) Netbeans - free and open-source, comes default with the Java Development Kit, as an optional addon. It does support development environments for multiple languages. Freeware 1) Programmer's Notepad - Supports syntax highlighting for multiple languages. Windows only. 2) Visual Studio Express - The free version of Visual Studio. It's perfect for people who want to get started developing on Windows. Naturally, Windows only. Proprietary 1) Sublime Text - Technically paid, but a free, unlimited trial is available. It is cross-platform, and widely regarded as one of the best Text-based development environments. 2) IntelliJ - Specifically for Java and Android development. Cloud This is a pretty unique category, as there are literally dozens of cloud-based IDEs for various languages. I'll try my best to highlight some of the best ones based on languages supported. Feel free to link me to any Cloud IDEs you know of and I will add it to the list. 1) Cloud9 - Code anywhere. Free and subscription available. Doesn't appear to have language restrictions. 2) Codenvy - Free and premium subscriptions available. There are free premium packages if you plan on developing open-source projects (the way I interpret it). FRAPS/Dxtory, Xsplit By far the best video recording and streaming tools available. However, there are more than a fair share of free and open-source options. Open-source 1) Open Broadcaster Software - capable of streaming to Justin.tv, Twitch.tv and other streaming sites. Optionally, it'll also record to the HDD using a range of compression settings. While it is open-source, a Linux version currently doesn't exist. There is plenty of interest in a Linux version. 2) GLC - The Linux FRAPS. GLC is a bit tricky to install, but is excellent on Linux. Needs to be built from source. 3) Yukon - Similar to GLC. Needs to be built from source. 4) SimpleScreenRecorder - Name is self-explanatory. Supports desktop and game recording, as well as streaming to Twitch.TV and other streaming services. 5) Twitch Streamer - A minimal shell script designed to stream directly to Twitch. Captures from the X server directly. Freeware 1) FFsplit - a free streaming software available primarily on Windows. 2) MSI Afterburner - one of the best free options for recording gameplay. Media Players Everyone needs a media player, whether it's combined or just for music. Open-source 1) VLC - easily the best media player available. Also capable of recording the desktop and there's also the possibility of a video editor being added later on. Supports Bluray with some workarounds. 2) MPlayer/SMPlayer - along the lines of VLC. Cross-platform. 3) aTunes - iTunes equivalent on Windows and Linux. 4) Amarok - feature-rich media player. 5) XBMC - great open-source media player, capable of all types of media. Particularly good for an HTPC setup. 6) Audacious - open-source and available on many Linux distributions. Also cross-platform. 7) Clementine - cross-platform and open-source music player. 8) Plex - media streaming option along the lines of XBMC, but designed to run as a server. Ideal for a centralized media server and streaming to multiple devices (Mobile, PC, HTPC, etc). 9) Windows Media Player classic - plays a wide range of formats, specifically rmvb (RealPlayer). Simple and easy to use interface. A great alternative to VLC media player, but is Windows only despite being open-source. 10) Banshee - Open-source and cross-platform media player. Great replacement for iTunes (supports iPod syncing). 11) Apollo - A music player for Android. One of many options on Android. 12) MPV - Fork of mplayer2 and MPlayer, lightweight and easy to use. Freeware 1) Foobar2000 - IMO, one of the best and most configurable music players. 2) Winamp - This is only included because it's one of the more popular options. I personally would not recommend it, as it is more bloated compared to other options. 3) KMPlayer - Free media player on Windows. 4) iTunes - self-explanatory. Windows and OS X only, with alternatives above for Linux. 5) MusicBee - Free Music player available on Windows. 6) PotPlayer - Free music player for Windows operating systems. Gaming This section is perhaps no longer needed due to SteamOS. However, for games that don't run natively on Linux (and ignoring Steam's in-house streaming option), here are the best ways to get games running on Linux: Open-source 1)WINE - The easiest way, supports a wide range of Windows applications and Games. Check the AppDB for specific issues with some applications. Generally, anything rated Gold and above in their database will run well. 2) PlayOnLinux - essentially WINE, but with a simple GUI to make managing Games easier. Also supports various Windows applications. A full list of supported software is on their website. Proprietary I know the topic says Free/Open-source, but I feel like this deserves an exception: 1) Crossover - basically a paid version of WINE with better support. CAD/CAM/CAE Stands for Computer Aided Design/Manufacturing/Engineering. Prime examples of proprietary software are: SolidWorks, Unigraphics NX, Catia, ANSYS, Pro Engineer, AutoCAD, among many more. The following is a list of free and open-source alternatives. Open-source 1) FreeCAD - the perfect AutoCAD and Solidworks replacement. 2) OpenFOAM - The best open-source alternative to ANSYS tools (primarily used for numerical simulation in Structural and Mechanical Engineering). 3) Scilab - excellent replacement for MATLAB (which is cross-platform, while still proprietary). Scilab is the free and open-source equivalent based on Python. 4) Octave - very similar to Scilab and MATLAB. 5) Scipy - a python extension specifically for scientific and simulation-based calculations. 6) CAElinux - Should really belong in a section of its own, as it's an entire distribution built around CAE. Torrent clients The most common ones are BitTorrent and uTorrent, among others. Most of these clients are free, but aren't open-source. Some of them are more bloated than others. The following is a list of free and open-source clients. 1) Deluge - Great torrent client. I used it briefly; supports extra features through plugins. Cross-platform. 2) Transmission - Same as Deluge, free and open-source. Runs on many Linux distributions. 3) rtorrent - Generally installed through the repositories of whichever distribution. Terminal based, very simple yet powerful. Optionally, rutorrent can be installed to give it a web-based interface. These two are a very popular choice for a dedicated server running as a Torrent box (frequently referred to as a seedbox). 4) qBittorent - Cross-platform and open-source. 5) Tixati - Heard about this one more recently. Runs on Windows and Linux. Instant Messaging/Chat programs Not really a category that needs to be included, as most are free. However, not all are open-source. The only proprietary paid program I know of is mIRC, which is a commonly used IRC program. Some alternatives to mIRC: 1) Hexchat - an improvement over xChat. Cross platform (Windows, Linux) and open-source. Lots of features. xChat Aqua is an option for OS X. 2) Irssi/Weechat - minimalist IRC program. Not suited for everyone, but has a clean interface, and fun to tinker around with. Weechat is similar to Irssi. 3) Pidgin - mutli-protocol chat program. Supports IRC as well as many other common ones: Windows Live, Facebook, Jabber, Google Talk, AIM and many more. 4) Jitsi - similar to Pidgin, has some nice security features. Email Clients This section contains tools that run from within the Linux terminal, and don't exist as a standalone application. Nevertheless, they are quite powerful when used correctly. 1) Mozilla Thunderbird - probably one of the most well-known email clients. Cross-platform. 2) Claws Mail - An open-source email client for Linux. Cross-platform. 3) Mutt - Terminal-based email client. 4) Squirrel Mail - Personally used it to set up an Email server on a dedicated server (Kimsufi 2G), works wonderfully. Simple web interface for checking email. Linux Terminal-based Tools This section contains tools that run from within the Linux terminal, and don't exist as a standalone application. Nevertheless, they are quite powerful when used correctly. 1) Vi/Vim - excellent text editor for Linux. Comes pre-packaged with many Linux installers. 2) Nano - also comes pre-packed with Linux installers. 3) Emacs 4) cmus - Terminal-based music player. 5) Mutt - Terminal-based email client. Antivirus Generally not a problem for Linux due to its security features; however, there are some open-source and free options available for Windows, OS X and Linux. I haven't used the open-source ones below, so I cannot comment on its effectiveness. Nevertheless, I'll list them for people to try out. Open-source 1) ClamAV - Available as source code for various Linux distributions. Freeware 1) Avast - free and pro versions available. One of the most recommended free options. 2) AVG - same as Avast. Personally find it to be a bit bloated. 3) Microsoft Security Essentials - comes built into Windows 8, available for Windows 7 as well as other Windows OS's. 4) Malwarebytes - Anti-malware software. PDF Tools The following section contains software used to view and manipulate PDF files (annotations, editing PDFs, combining, etc). 1) PDFCreator - print to PDF, among other features. 2) Bullzip PDF - A printer driver which can be installed to print any document type as a PDF. Particularly useful for obscure file formats that can't be converted directly to PDF. 3) SumatraPDF - A free PDF and ebook (.epub, .mobi) reader. 4) Evince - A replacement PDF viewer that supports other file formats. 5) Xournal - free and open-source software specifically replacing OneNote or other Journal applications. Supports tablet PCs, and is able to annotate PDFs. 6) Stylus Labs - So far, of the Journal applications I've tried, this works the best in terms of writing performance. Xournal had an input lag that I noticed on Windows, not sure how it runs on Linux. Saves as .html files, with optional PDF export. Quite the quirky website design too. 7) PDFLite - PDF Viewer and printer (converts multiple formats to PDF). Source code is freely available for compiling on Linux. Virtualization This section contains software used for virtualization, whether it be development environments (virtual servers), or virtual machines. It's a fairly broad category. Some of the software under development tools were moved to this section to be a bit more accurate. The list includes free and open-source options. 1) Oracle's Virtualbox - the go-to option for free virtual machines. Supports a wide range of guest and host operating systems. 2) VMWare Workstation Player - available in Free and Pro versions (for commercial use). 3) Xen - Open-source virtualization, supports many guest operating systems and also supports various cloud platforms (OpenStack, etc). 4) KVM - another popular open-source virtualization program for Linux. 5) XAMPP - Web development environment. 6) Vagrant - creates a Virtual Server and sets it up as a development environment. Easily create and re-create (in any desired configuration) development environments to suit your needs. 7) WPN-XM - Web development environment built around Nginx (alternative web server to Apache), PHP, and Mariadb (faster alternative to MySQL). Miscellaneous This section contains mostly things that don't fall into the above categories, generally free. Some of them are cross-platform. Some of the summaries below may not be very accurate, so correct me if I'm mistaken. I've only used a couple of them in the past. 1) 7-zip - Everyone should have this, everyone should love it. Much better features compared to winzip and works with many different compression formats. 2) KeePass2 - encrypts and stores all of your passwords. 3) Xming - view/run X (Unix/Linux) based programs on Windows. 4) Cygwin/MinGW - Linux environment on Windows, can be used to compile programs from source on Windows. More involved, so usually ideal only for the tech savvy. Nice to have though, for people who want to tinker. 5) PuTTY - Simple SSH Client. Good for managing servers via command line. 6) Filezilla FTP - One of the best free FTP clients. Believe it also has SSH built in, but never used it. 7) Ghostscript/Ghostview - viewer/interpreter for Postscript, a programming language for creating vector graphics. 8) TrueCrypt - one of the best free disk encryption. Has automatic and real-time encryption of data. ---------------------- I haven't personally used many of the above applications, but it's a starting point for people interested in making the jump to Linux or SteamOS. Some of these options are a bit more involved to get running, but don't be afraid to get your hands dirty! It's an immense learning experience, and well worth learning.
  16. Hi, I've encountered this issue and to be honest, I've run out of ideas and other hardware to test with. My system is running Linux (Ubuntu Studio to be exact) but I don't know if this is a problem with the software as I get the same info when booting to a live USB. The Problem: I have installed 4 x 4GB DDR3 1600 9-9-9-24 (matching) sticks. They recognise in the UEFI/BIOS they are detected when running the "sudo lshw | grep -A 8 bank" command in the terminal (output below) however the total memory detected by the OS (or live USB OS) is only 7.5GB. The problem persists with all amounts of RAM above 8GB, including 2x8GB and 4x8GB all at 1600Mhz but lowering speeds or timing makes no difference. In addition, the 8GB sticks are 1.5v and the 4GB sticks are 1.65v so no mixing of capacities has been done. 17. Hi, just made my account to seek for help after digging ~5 hrs into solving the problem... I installed the AMF enabled ffmpeg, following exactly how the Github instruction said, and compiled ffmpeg without issues. Driver Linux · GPUOpen-LibrariesAndSDKs/AMF Wiki (github.com) However, things are getting tricky when I try to use the h264_amf flag. As someone had also raised an issue here [Bug]: AMF failed to initialize on the default Vulkan device: 1 on Ubuntu 22.04 · Issue #358 · GPUOpen-LibrariesAndSDKs/AMF (github.com), I encountered this issue as well. I did a fresh install on my machine, Minisforum UM780 XTX (7840HS, Radeon 780M GPU). At the end of the day so sad nothing seems to be working with AMD... Tried AMF and VDPAU. Essentially, I want to use it to convert videos to m3u8 for streaming services, and I used the following command for testing. The result is attached, `ffmpeg -hwaccel auto -i input.mp4 -c:v h264_amf output.mp4` Would be appreciated if any help could be offered. Cheers.
  18. I was thinking about getting Manjaro XFCE for my low end laptop to game, but then saw some posts talking about it being buggy?!. I really do not mind how it looks or how easy it is to setup. I kinda like the long setup process anyway. If all I cared about was performance and stability, do you think I should go with Arch instead of Manjaro? If yes, is XFCE perfectly fine or should I mess around with i3 or KDE?
  19. I recently obtained an Acer N15Q9 Chromebook and started to play around with it. After finding ChromeOS to be a poor experience I decided to go through the whole ordeal to get Linux running on it. I used the tools and guides provided by mrchromebox to flash UEFI firmware to the device and proceeded to install Ubuntu 22.10. Everything works fine except when I try to playback audio. It will work fine for a while but then the audio playback will stop and the computed produces a harsh buzzing sound from the speakers. I believe it to be software related as video sources accompanying the audio, like a YouTube video, will stop playback and appear to buffer as this happens. The PC remains usable but until the audio source is killed the speakers continue to do this. I tried installing Ubuntu 22.04.1 as Ubuntu migrated to PipeWire in 22.10 but the issue is present there as well. Anybody got any ideas as to what could be going on?
  20. Put simply the biggest annoyance for me with pc gaming is steam updates. They don't happen automatically and since my pc is turned off except when I use it I have to wait for updates often. So If I had a linux VM with steam installed is it possible to make steam update games instantly? Then since steam transfers over LAN would it just pass It to my gaming pc? I have Gbit so the main slowdown is decompressing does steam transfer decompressed versions of the updates? Steam cache would be pointless since my internet speed is easily fast enough to saturate my ssd with decompression. My main goal is to get around decompression. this might sound like a none issue but if the only down side for me is some extra storage space used I don't see it as a waste. Any help appreciated!
  21. The previous version of Ubuntu 14 I released and posted about built for the Wii was very unstable. This one has an updated Kernel along with Wi-Fi Support now. For all the details and download please check out https://github.com/Wiibuntu/Ubuntu14-Wii but I will sum up some things here. About The Project: Trying to bring newer versions of Ubuntu to the Wii has been a project of mine for the last few months. Many trial and errors. This versions actually build somewhat off of Wii-Linux-NGX But this version uses the same bootloader with a different kernel, a newer one. And it also boots Ubuntu 14 instead of Debian 8. Kernel branch used was "Stable 3x". Originally used the "rebased-v3" Kernel but things where broken. Exact kernel is 3.14.14-wii. How to Install (Homebrew Needed!): In the download section you will find a .img file. That file will two partitions: a fat32 partition and a ext4 partition. The fat32 partition will contain the Linux loader for the Homebrew Channel. Just flash this image to an SD Card (2GB or more needed!) Other Wii Linux Versions: https://github.com/Wiibuntu/Xubuntu-9.04-Wii (Unsupported) https://github.com/Wiibuntu/Ubuntu-13.10-Wii (Active)
  22. So basically, I recovered a lot of files from an external HDD and now have around 250000 PNG files. And now the problem I am facing is that there are a lot of textures from Minecraft texture packs and Windows applications mix in because the recovery program didn't restore the folder structure. And now I am trying to find a tool to mass delete them when they have a certain size, e.g., 64x64 or 1024x1024. I'd prefer a Linux command line tool, but It's not so important. Thank you in advance.
  23. Ubuntu 13.10 Server For Nintendo Wii For detailed information please see the GitHub page https://github.com/Wiibuntu/Ubuntu-13.10-Wii About The Project: Trying to bring newer versions of Ubuntu to the Wii has been a project of mine for a while. Many trial and errors. This versions actually build somewhat off of Wii-Linux-NGX But this version uses the same bootloader with a different kernel, a newer one. And it also boots Ubuntu 13 instead of Debian 8. You have 2 Kernels to choose from via Gumboot. More info in "How To Boot" section of the GitHub page. Wi-Fi Config: Previous Unstable version of Ubuntu 14 for the Wii I released has a Wi-Fi Bug with the b43 Driver. This version DOES NOT have that bug. Wi-Fi Works. Its as simple as using the "whiite-ez-wifi-config" file located in "/home/ubuntu" and setting up for Wi-Fi! If that doesn't work please use the command "sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces" and add the ssid and passkey yourself.
  24. Hi thanks for taking time helping me, it's very much appreciated. I'm getting an error message when I try to stream my videos (This client isn't compatible with the media and the server isn't sending a compatible media format). I think I know why but don't know how to fix. My media is on a second drive which I have set up to mount automatically. I'm guessing it can't find the media or it's a permissions issue. When I check the log it says: /run/media/fedora/Jellyfin/Jellyfin Server Media/tv shows/The long way down/Long Way Down (2).mp4: No such file or directory Full log: https://pastebin.com/embed_js/pqyGMw3D This is the guide I used to auto mount second drive: https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-per...ou-should/ I'm using Fedora 39 updated, Jellyfin 10.8.13 and I think I've installed the necessary codecs. # System Details Report --- ## Report details - **Date generated:** 2024-03-09 18:30:59 ## Hardware Information: - **Hardware Model:** Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
