Free and Open-source Alternatives to Common Programs Revision History 1.0 - Thread created 1.1 - Thread revamped with new info and added links. 1.2 - Added Index (placeholder) Introduction With the advent of SteamOS, a good portion of gamers will likely switch to using it for their gaming needs. It won't really be long before more games start supporting Linux natively; newer games will definitely be supporting it as early as 2014, older games are constantly being ported over. Gaming on Linux is gaining momentum, but what about other productivity tools? Windows is still the king of O

This project is unofficial -- it is NOT associated with Floatplane Media in any way/shape/form. A paid Floatplane subscription is required for proper use! ~Thanks to @Duder McBroham, whose post I used as a visual guide for this post's layout.~ Was looking for a Roku client/channel, and I couldn't find one, so I wrote this small client. Supports login via Floatplane only (no legacy LTT forum, nor Discord at the moment). 2FA login is supported. I'm currently working on a few bugs/enhancements, though I work full time, so progress is sparse. Pull requests/bug r

I've been trying to convert a 1TB SSD from Dynamic to Basic after a system crash that required a fresh Windows install. I downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard 12.1 to covert the disk without losing the data on it, but it requires a purchase of the Pro version to have that functionality. Anyone know of a source for a free activation code for this software? Or perhaps a similar open source piece of software that will help me in this situation. Thanks.

In the most recent WAN show, Linus and Luke complained that there wasn't a way to access multiple IM services from one application. One solution to the problem that's appeared over the past few years is matrix, a messaging protocol that has interoperability with other services as one of its core goals. I've run a matrix homeserver in the past along with a few bridges. Although it wasn't exactly trivial to set up, it's well within the reach of anyone who's familiar with running web-servers on Linux. Has anyone else here tried to run one? If so do you still use it?

Just saw this article. More and more things with Microsoft are going open source. Heck, the MS calculator app is open source and was even ported to Android. Do they really have a new perspective on the topic then about a decade ago? Here is the article: https://www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2020/5/18/21262103/microsoft-open-source-linux-history-wrong-statement?__twitter_impression=true

Dear community, I posted it here since it is mostly server related in my opinion (correct me if I am wrong). I have a very lightweight laptop for university purposes and a nice well working desktop which can basically run anything. After seeing the Shadow video on LTT, I figured it had to be possible to set up something like this for myself. So that, when I am not at home I can host games from my pc and play on my laptop. However, I dont know any open source software that could do this, or what the requirements would be, since I have never attempted this before (I do, how

Yes, this picture explains everything. While I don't work on any projects large enough that would necessitate these changes, its nice to see that Github wants to adopt them and Microsoft is willing to assist them. Knowing how journalism works these days, I'm prepared for the memes/jokes/articles on Microsoft developing Windows on macOS and Linux when this is unrelated. Just keep in mind that this is to allow other developers to take advantage of the scaling improvements used for developing Windows (300GB codebase and 3000 active devs). Also curious to see if placeholders in OneDrive wi

Introduction Hello everyone, long time ago I develop media converter software. Time to share with everyone IFME quite popular, even production studio use for batch and archive their video (using HEVC), so they can put more video in same disk. New DirectX Shader Compiler based on Clang/LLVM now available as Open Source Is making the compiler open source the same thing as making DX12 open-source? That's my presumption, here. Anyway, I figure that motivations for Microsoft to do this might include: a) Vulkan looking attractive to developers due to its open-source nature, as well as being cross-platform, and Microsoft feels they have to do more to incentivise developers to use DX12 instead of Vulkan b) DX12 games are not establishing a great track record for performance improvement, so far, w

Animation software used by Studio Ghibli, Futurama goes free, open source
Guest posted a topic in Tech News
Japanese publishing company Dwango has announced that now that it has acquired the animation software Toonz from its Italian developers, it will be publishing its source code, making it free to download and building a business around installation services and providing support and training for companies wanting to use it. It will also be developing proprietary versions (ToonzPremium) for companies wanting to customize the software for their projects. Sadly, the press release doesn't seem to indicate what the licensing for the software is going to be, so I'm guessing 'free' in this case me- 7 replies

Synergy is a cross-platform peripheral server that allows you to seamlessly work across multiple devices running potentially different platforms using the same keyboard and mouse combo. I'd like to know if there is an open-source equivalent to at least some of the features it offers, because AFAIK it's not FOSS. Basically, I'm attempting something that few have ever done before and am going to try to game in VMWare using PCIe passthrough with a GTX 960 (using a 750 Ti for my host Linux system). I'm jailing Windows from the internet for personal reasons and want its performance uncompromised

SageTV was acquired by Google in 2011 whereafter Google used the technology for its Google Fiber TV service. Prior to Google's acquisition SageTV was a cross-platform digital video recorder tool and media center application for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. Source: http://www.engadget.com/2015/03/16/google-open-sourcing-sage-tv/ Code related to Google Fiber will not be available (which means there won’t be native support for YouTube, Netflix, etc), but there will be support for media center extender devices. The interesting part remains; will this open source version attract i

Hi, Finished putting together my computer and I'm happy with it. Small problem, I don't have an OS. I've ordered Windows 7 and I think it should be here about Saturday, but I'd really rather start using my computer now. I was already going to install Linux along with Windows, but other sources say that Windows should be installed before Linux. I wouldn't mind losing a week's worth of data so if I have to completely wipe my drive before installing Windows Saturday it'd be fine. Do you think I should go ahead and install Linux?

In 2003 Munich's city council was voted to spend 30 million Euro for a over-10-years transition from Windows to Linux. The Munich government use a customized version of Ubuntu called LiMux as their choice of Operating System. The migration was declared complete in 2013. But now, a few months after the transition was completed, the newly elected coalition government is considering whether they should phase out Linux, and switching back to Microsoft's platform, http://www.zdnet.com/after-a-10-year-linux-migration-munich-considers-switching-back-to-windows-and-off

Hello everybody, I know this isn't the place to ask (hence the off-topic choice), and it's more of a 'tell me who'd know so I can ask them'. So, next semester I'll be working on editing an open source English textbook (for primary or lower secondary school) to make it suitable for deployment in Ghana. Trouble is, there's quite a few open source English textbooks out there, and I don't really have the time to go through all of them. Does anyone know who might be able to help me out there? Cheers, John

Wow! If what Tor & Mozilla are looking to accomplish with these experiments under the Polaris Project title work, then I may be easily swayed back to using Firefox as my main browser. It is doubly interesting that the 2nd experiment may allow "content sites that respect a user's preferences" to still target advertising while still protecting users. Color me excited. original articles at: https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/mozilla-firefox-internet-browser-doubles-internet-privacy-partnering-tor-project///

I'm just wondering if its possible to program a GUI or even the entire software interface for a jet fighter using x86 hardware with all aircraft specific hardware going into an emulator or translator that turns certain data like data from the radar into data that x86 hardware can read. I'm just wondering if this is possible because the F-35 has a really great cockpit layout were the entire cockpit is basically a giant monitor that display important flight and radar data. BTW I frogot to mention that the flight display is also a touch screen, so you can choice your weapons or radar targets with

Someone on GitHub found a comment in the source code that used the word "he" and changed it to "they" to avoid using gender specific words. He submitted a pull request without specifying what modules he changed nor did he sign a CLA (which proper pull requests should include). One of the main developers, called bnoordhuis, replied with "Sorry, not interested in trivial changes like that" and denied the patch, and the thread freaked out calling him a "douche", "fucking pathetic" and "sexist". The patch was then pushed through to the company that owns the project (the project being node.js)

I wanted to start this thread to start a discussion on a problem that is merely cosmetic, yet annoying none the less. I have a few RGB peripherals and LED strips that all use different software and are completely incompatible with each other. I use Asus Aura Sync, which I find clunky, unintuitive, and limited in what it can do. I use G.Skills TWO DIFFERENT PROGRAMS for the KM780, and MX780 which are buggy, unreliable, and have limited options. Considering that controlling RBG LEDs doesn't go through the motherboards bios (from my observations), and RGB LEDs are controlled through software thro

Hi All! I'd like to ask if anyone can recommend a good free or very affordable software load balancer? I've just upgraded my mobile carrier's data-plan, so it has some pretty good LTE speeds. Now I plan to make the most bang for my buck by tethering my phone to my desktop whenever I'm at home. Right now, my desktop uses my home DSL connection via wired LAN. I was thinking of using a load balancer so I could merge both WAN connections into a single high-speed connection. The only one I've read anything noteworthy about is Speedify. Unfortunately, that's a bit expensive—a
