Hello all. I am trying one final time to get TrueNAS working on this box before I throw in the towel and try unRAID or wait for the stealth NAS software company Linus keeps hinting about. I'm trying to set up a Windows 11 VM for use over Tailscale. VM settings are attached, and I believe I have everything right in BIOS with VT-D and such. Without GPU passthrough the VM functions fine, but when I try to passthrough the dedicated GPU (GTX 1080) it hangs indefinitely at the "please wait" spinning wheel until I refresh the UI page. I have tried isolating the GPU, pinning vcpus, enabling/disabling Hyper-V enlightenments, even completely reinstalling TrueNAS SCALE, makes no difference. I recently got the attached error message after making a new VM and trying to add the GPU before installing the OS, but all other times there's been no error message. Just hangs or crashes. Attached is the log file associated with the VM that got this error. Sometimes it crashes the whole machine. A picture of the CLI on the box is attached when I tried to start a VM that had previously attempted a GPU, but no longer had a GPU enabled in the settings. I've found only one other thread with a similar issue and it had no responses. Anyhow I have absolutely no idea why this is happening so any help would be greatly appreciated. Hello! I have recently installed a Quadro 4000 in my server and have it passed into my VM, and the VM has it setup and recognizes it as another display with the headless dongle I purchased. I can use the GPU to drive the display when I connect using Chrome Remote Desktop, my question is can I use it to drive the display seen when I use the VNC connection from the unRaid GUI? I am trying to access this from my Chromebook at school and I can using the VNC connection in the GUI, but as far as I can tell this is run off of the virtual GPU, not the Quadro. Is there a way I can get the VNC connection in the unRaid GUI to use a display driven by my Quadro?

I just got a single GPU passthrough thing working on my Manjaro system (7700K, 1080ti, Z270I Gaming Pro Carbon AC), but I’m not getting any sound. I have already enabled linger, and I set nographics_allow_host_audio to 1 in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf. When I run a normal VM without passthrough, qemu is running is my own user, as is virt-manager, as is pulseaudio. I’ve also tried adding the following to my xml, but it doesn’t solve anything: <qemu:commandline> <qemu:arg value='-device'/> <qemu:arg value='ich9-intel-hda,bus=pcie.0,addr=0x1b'/> <qemu:arg value='-device'/> <qemu:arg value='hda-micro,audiodev=hda'/> <qemu:arg value='-audiodev'/> <qemu:arg value='pa,id=hda,server=unix:/run/user/1000/pulse/native'/> </qemu:commandline> So, anyone got an idea on how to get sound working? Preferably both microphone and audio out.

So I murdered my beloved Asus x99-deluxe by apparently creating a short-circuit and – not specifically due to SARS-CoV-2019 btw. – am pretty much broke. This rearranged Dual CPU motherboard sounds like a fun alternative for me – I mean no WiFi/Bluetooth which sucks and no 2 LAN ports and shitty sound – since it would feel better than having to buy a weaker board than what I had in the beginning, without the coolness factor of an at least "kind-of-upgrade"... Now I have to figure out three things, that I can't find anywhere about this motherboard X99 Dual CPU Motherboard Set LGA 2011-3 CPU DDR4 Motherboard : https://www.ebay.de/itm/324616877087?hash=item4b94ac741f:m:mb3xpPOc73zOHHha2iCFDbg Can it use consumer x99 CPUs (i.e. 2x i7 5820k)? It says x99 but I am sure it's actually a server chipset... Do my 8x HyperX Fury DDR4 sticks work with it? Can I somehow add WiFi/Bluetooth affordably to one of the m.2 slots? Does it really have USB 3.0 pins and USB 2.0 pins as it's stated in it's description? Does it have clean IOMMU groups for VFIO? It is one of the things I needed in my rig because I have a NVDIA gpu I passed through to a Windows VM and I accessed it with looking-glass, which is something I would like to be able to still do... I hope someone can help me with some of those. Cheers from someone who ALWAYS manages to break his own hardware goldsteal

I'm looking into consolidating my PC's by putting my normal Windows desktop into a VM ontop of either FreeNAS or unRAID. The idea would be that TrueNAS / unRAID would handle all the same stuff my current NAS does (manage storage pools, set up network sharing, Plex library hosting, etc.) while I reserve some CPU and GPU power for my Windows VM. The question I'm unsure of is this: if I have a single GPU (namely an Nvidia RTX 3060ti), can it be used for both the host NAS OS and in the VM for display capabilities and hardware video decoding at the same time? Or would I need another GPU entirely to allow for this?

Hi, I'm currently trying to get GPU passthrough working on Arch Linux. I'm running an i7 7700k on an ASUS Prime Z-270 A motherboard. My Linux install is completely fresh. My problem is that everything I want to pass through works (Wifi Card, as well as the audio controller of my GPU), but the VGA Adapter of my GPU wont. I'm trying to get the VFIO-pci driver to grab my GPU, and according to dmesg, the VGA Adapter should be used by VFIO-pci. [ 1.182950] vfio_pci: add [1002:67ef[ffffffff:ffffffff]] class 0x000000/00000000 [ 1.196796] vfio_pci: add [1002:aaf0[ffffffff:ffffffff]] class 0x000000/00000000 [ 1.213483] vfio_pci: add [14e4:43a0[ffffffff:ffffffff]] class 0x000000/00000000 This is the lspci output so you can see the IOMMU groups and the PCI ID's: 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. In virt-manager I get this error: group is not viable Please ensure all devices within the iommu_group are bound to their vfio bus driver I tried the same on an Ubuntu Install already, with the same hardware, and it failed at the exact same point. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. A friend suggested to apply the ACS Patch to my Kernel, but I don't have the slightest idea how I patch a kernel If you need any config file, let me know, but as I said, its all configured as shown in that guide. Thanu you guys already

Budget (including currency): $3000 Country: US Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Want Base as Linux - version TBD - this will host two passthrough Windows VM's for Windows 10 gaming. All other VM's off this box will be either Linux or Windows Server 2019 Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Use existing drives/case/etc. Parts RTX2070 (2) for Windows 10 virtualization https://www.newegg.com/asrock-rack-romed8-2t/p/N82E16813140044 Epyc Server Board - see elow - think option 2 is bette EDIT - Decided on the same Gigabyte MZ32-AR0 that Linus used - has IOMMU in BIOS whereas ASRock does not. Has MORE memory slots. Has most of the features I need (not as good as ASRock) https://www.newegg.com/amd-epyc-7402p-socket-sp3/p/N82E16819113592?Description=epyc rome cpu 24 core&cm_re=epyc_rome_cpu_24_core-_-19-113-592-_-Product 24 Core Epyc CPU So this motherboard is more expensive than the Gigabyte motherboard Linux used. This one has all 7 pice x 16 gen 4 slots, 2 oculus, 1 thunderbolt, etc. Adding Adaptec 71605 - not sure if I will do passthrough to Windows Server 2019 as all drives attached are on current Windows Server 2019 implementation Using 45 drive case to replace 36 bay that had motherboard, aIso will need to buy a new case for the ASRock motherboard Questions: 1) I cannot really afford all 8 sockets of RAM to be populated - can I start with say 2 or 4 memory sockets populated? 2) Did Linus ever get around the SMT issue? If not, they could be a deal breaker for me. I think the Threadripper TR3 has a workaround for VFIO and SMT, but there are no 7 pice 4 7 slot motherboards. I would be fine with 7 slots provided maybe 3 were pcie 4 and the rest were pcie3 so I can put in expansion card 3) Thoughts for a case? 4) Should I watercool? Will that lower the overall temperature in the room? Or which is the ideal air cooler? 5) Any good tutorials on VFIO? 6) For the motherboard provided above, how would i find out the IOMMU groupings and if this will do what I want 7) Any ideas for a case? I do NOT need any drives in their except the ones populated on the motherboard as I will hook up to external 45 bay All help is is sincerely appreciated. While I have been running Linux, I want to cut down on physical Windows machines (ideally want to get off Windows eventually completely). New to VFIO and GPU passthrough. Timothy Atwood

I'm wondering what most people here use for GPU passthrough. I have an old Dell Precision workstation that I'm trying to turn into a gaming box/home lab for Linux & Windows learning. I've tried VMWare ESXi and Proxmox KVM (based on Debian Linux) and got GPU passthrough working with both. Neither is perfect, but I'm leaning towards ESXi at the moment because I'm having so much trouble with audio on KVM. On KVM, I've got audio to the point that game audio plays OK, but Youtube has skipping and distortion problems when there's any background activity (downloads, disk transfers, etc.) Setting up GPU passthrough on KVM was also a good bit more painful than ESXi was. That's not to say that ESXi doesn't have problems. I couldn't get USB hotplug working in my Windows VM, so I had to resort to task scheduler to force a USB scan every minute. I also had to find a super-secret config file parameter to prevent "Code 43" errors with my GeForce GPU. But audio work great, even when there's a lot of background activity. Has anyone here had better experiences with their hypervisor of choice? Does Linus' favorite platform, Unraid, make it any easier to do passthrough?

Hey all, i have a gigabyte 1660 in my unraid rig. Worked flawlessly since april. After a reboot, i no longer get signal. Unfortunately it's x79 with no onboard video. I have an old amd card, that's recognized and displays no problem in any slot. Has there been any news around about them randomly dying? (nothing back form gigabyte support yet) Any suggestions? Previous experiences? I get fan spin, just no video, not found in unraid. vt-d is on, csm set to auto, secure boot set to 'otheros' 4930k asus x79 deluxe (latest bios version 4805) gigabyte 1660 (non-ti) corsair tx850 psu unraid 6.70 to 6.7.2, same issue.

Hi! I've encountered a problem which makes me sick... I'm trying to avoid classic dual boot for better solution which is virtual Windows machine. But I can't deal with the problem that my GPU won't send any signal to HDMI or DVI-D port. But first.... My PC specs: CPU: Intel Core i7 6700K GPU: GeForce GTX 1070 MOBO: AsRock Fatality K6 Z170 RAM: G.Skill RipjawsV (16 GB) I've built linux-vfio from AUR (thanks to yaourt) and I'm using it right now. I've edited mkinitcpio.conf and added some modules. Also I'm using systemd-boot instead of GRUB, so I've done editing loader.conf and entries/linux-vfio.conf with proper stuff. My vfio.conf and blacklist.conf are in place and qemu can use UEFI to boot my virtual machine. I'm using virt-manager which is configured and ready to work. Here are my configs: /etc/mkinitcpio.conf: https://pastebin.com/Thqa3KJ1/etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf: https://pastebin.com/QUac89Wj/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf: https://pastebin.com/JPXsUC1Z/boot/loader/loader.conf: https://pastebin.com/kPDV428p/boot/loader/entries/linux-vfio.conf: https://pastebin.com/XdRmzbwS/etc/libvirt/qemu.conf: https://pastebin.com/2p04UXN1 And some outputs (look: SSs) I'm sure that I've done everything correctly but I can't get any output from my GPU under virt machune.... Any ideas? Help? Please, I'm dealing with this problem for 3 days ;-; And sorry for any mistakes, english isn't my mother language.

I am attempting to create a Windows 10 VM that has 4 cores 8 threads, 12GB of RAM, along with my R9 290 for gaming When I create it using VNC graphics gives me no issue, I can restart it, VNC into it, etc. When I swap over to my R9 290 it works, but once I reboot once it just never starts again, not display out I would get more issues when I'd use i440fx-3.0 so now I've been using Q35-3.0 or 3.1 machine type My PC Specs are as followed HP Z420 with Xeon E5-2689(8c 16t), 32GB ECC Samsung RAM, R9 290, some random HDD and ADATA thumb drive for Unraid (sandy bridge CPU if that helps) I don't know what other information would be useful, but I'm happy to give any other information. I've gotten games to run well on the VM, but once I reboot, it just doesn't work again
