What's the best hard drive to dedicate to screen recording?
vibeit posted a topic in Storage Devices
What's the best HDD for recording game footage or just desktop activity, in general? I don't know if I should invest on SSDs since they don't have the capacity yet and I fear wearing them out too fast for this so I'd rather use SSD for the actual work/game while using a separate hard drive dedicated for recording. -
Around July, there were rumors about a FRAPS update promising Windows 8 and 10 support (not that I care about that, and as far as I know it works on Windows 8). I haven't heard anything else since. I know that free alternatives such as OBS have come about, but there's something I like about FRAPS, and whenever I try to use OBS my PC shits it's pants (Windows 7 bug?) although that being said FRAPS won't record my desktop or gmod/other Source games Just wondering if anything's come of this mysterious update rumor.

Hi friends. How do you make benchmarks of games? That is, in the sense of things must be taken into account when doing it, if they perform the tests in a long or short period, if they repeat several times or do not repeat, etc. Also, do you recommend msi or fraps? And how much bench time with Fraps should it be?

Hello , i just wanted to record some game play so i started my recording software : Fraps. I opened my game , and when i pressed my hotkey the Fraps FPS counter turned red for just a millisecond (fraps counter turns red if recording) and then it just went back to yellow. I searched on the internet a ton and i could not find a solution. My Fraps worked for more than 1.5 years now , and it just started doing that. PS: i tried looking for other recording programs but everything accept Fraps lags just too much , so dont comment ''that i have to try OBS'' Thank you , Trizael

Hello,I am taking Lectures for my course. These lectures come over the internet and one has to install their list of software to gain access to videos. Also there was restriction that such videos can only be played on laptop having screen less than 21 inch plus no HDMI or other outputs will be enabled. It was mandatory to install K lite Code pack (2 times i.e. installation over installation).I wanted to record these videos for my revision purpose but i was able to record only Audio.I tried all softwares :1. Microsoft Expression2. Camatasia3. Fraps4. BB Flashback5. OBS6. VLC Media playerAll are able to record desktop but as soon as that video comes up that portion becomes black. These things are opened when video is played: (https://ibb.co/iUbcHo)i can trace them here (https://ibb.co/ksqXiT)These are .dll files and softwares that came (Video plays through content browser)[https://ibb.co/enxTOT]This is how it records:-(https://ibb.co/erfF3T)is there any way to record this?I mean video must have entered somewhere as cache or something else to finally come up on screen.Kindly helpThanks

Recently, I have been wanting to record gameplay just for a bit of fun, but no recording software seems to be able to handle 1080p 60fps... Or even 1080p 30fps. I have used OBS and Fraps about a year ago with this system, but now that I am trying to record again, I am having no success. My old PC (i5-4570 8gb RAM 1060) could record better than my current system. First, I will start with my hardware: i5-8600K @ 5GHz 24GB 2400MHz RAM (mixed) GTX 1070 @ 2.1GHz Z370-HD3 Mobo 600w PSU Recording to either SSD or HDD has the same results Second, the software I am trying to record with: Fraps @ 1080p 60fps OBS @ 1080p 60fps (15000kbps, veryfast CPU preset, mp4) (Please let me know if you need screenshots of all of my OBS info) And lastly, the games I am trying to record: Far Cry 5 Assassins Creed Origins World of Tanks Other much older games that have 256mb vram recommendations that still run at under 60fps Any help will be appreciated. No idea why this is happening when I have been able to record these games at 1080p60 in the past. Thanks!

I have to post my build AGAIN because like an idiot, I forgot to mention that when playing games I'll be running fraps, and occasionally OBS. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/TyFilms/saved/dQpgsY How badly will it affect the performance? I'll be playing games like BO3, Infinite Warfare, Overwatch, Tomb Raider, CSGO, and other stuff. And I'll pretty much be running fraps every time I game lol. I wanna see my FPS.

Primarily as stated in the title this is my ever thread! so please excuse me if i put this is the wrong section or if im being just over all stupid but here it goes! So my intent is to save all kinds of recordings directly as im recording them from my main desktop (windows 10) to my server (Windows server 2012 r2 essentials) I know that fraps has the ability to record directly to a mapped network drive such as another computer yet it wont recognize my server to give more information im using the server mainly as a ftp server and soon also as a web server I got folders mapped and shared over my lan but fraps refuses to recognize them could any one help me shed some light over my problem and all bits of help are very much appreciated

Hi so i recently built a used workstation pc for around $275. it has 2 Xeon X5650s in it along with a GTX 760 and 24GB DDR3 ECC Registered memory. so i was wondering with 12 cores and 24 threads do programs like Fraps or sony vegas use alot of CPU power to work efficiently and does fraps use alot of CPU power to screen record? im planning on starting up a youtube channel for gaming and streaming so i was wondering if my workstation i just built was a bit overkill or is it just right for the workload im planning to throw at it. i plan to record and stream 1080p game footage. thanks guys

Alright, so I have a big problem with my file server right now and not too sure how to fix it. I use my personal rig to play games and record gameplay using FRAPS and the file save directory of FRAPS is on my fileserver (saved over my gigabit network) My personal rig is intel based with an i5 4670K, 16gb ddr3 ram, 480gb ssd, and a GTX 970 4GB STRIX Edition. My file server is an upgraded HP 6005 Pro SFF PC with an AMD Athlon ii x4 640, with 8gb ddr3, 80gb intel x-25m ssd, and a 4tb WD black I use my file server for media (music, videos, games that I am not playing currently are stored on the hard drive, and for documents, etc) I also use my file server to save my gameplay recordings, so when I play games I record using FRAPS and the save directory is on the 4tb WD black hard drive My issue is that my fps goes down from ~80 fps to 25 or less fps, so my game slows down a looooooot. I record mostly GTA V, BF4, BF Hardline, CS:GO, and some other random games sometimes. Should I buy more network cards (I currently use the onboard gigabit network card) and put them in my fileserver and team them in order to get a faster local connection or what can I do in order to fix my issue? Thank you in advance for all your help!

Hi all, i've been playing tf2 for a while and I want to start recording little frag movies. I consistently get around 100-200 fps while playing and i can usually get 120 while recording but when i finish recording and start watching back my film it is incredibly choppy and laggy. I have no idea as to why this is happening but it is. I'll include screenshots of my settings in case it has something to do with that. Thanks! Edit* everyone says that i should just use Shadowplay. Probs will. thanks for all the help guys.

I don't know if this is the right sub forum but anyways. I want to record SNOW (a skiing game on steam) but somehow I can't get 30 FPS in my recording. I think that is because of my WD green hard drive which I write the video files to. I'm using fraps to record the game My specs are: I5 4690K at stock speed; Hyper 212 evo cooler; R9 380 4G; crucial BX100 250 gb ssd (C drive); WD green (D drive, fraps is installed here). My question is: what could be the bottleneck? Thanks in advance

So I have been using Fraps forever and I have a good enough computer to be able to run games like Fallout New Vegas at over 100 FPS if I need but the moment I turn fraps on to record it gets to the point of unplayable and I cant keep turning down my settings to get a record able video, can anyone suggest a better recording software please?

I've just got Fraps and I'm experiencing unusually high fps drops when I start recording. While playing COD I'm getting about 215fps and then when I hit record it drops to about 1-15fps and it's unbearable! I'm recording to an external hard drive but there's definitely something wrong here.. I got better performance using different recording software when recording to the same drive! specs: 4690K 8GB Corsair Vengeance 970 Maximus Vii Hero WD Black 1TB Windows 10 I have tried recording to two different external storage drives but I notice that my disk with the game installled on is still going up to 100% utilisation when I record...

While I am playing my game, the FPS is about 40 to 60, but after I using Fraps to record my gameplay, the fps drop to 20 drop 40 - 60...WHY?? Every software like that all like that or just got Fraps like that? If it just Fraps only, got other software that can record gameplay but no making the fps drop? Thanks ! ! !

So i have recently started uploaded videos to YouTube. I record in Fraps and Edit in Adobe Premiere Pro. It took a few tries but I finally got my exports to be the quality I wanted. My first good video (here) came out fine and shows 1080p 60fps on my PC and on my phone. But now I have edited some more settings for my export to get better quality but now they are only showing up as 720p 30fps on my phone, such as THIS video But the PC still shows 1080p and 720p with 60FPS on my export. I'm not sure what I might have changed to cause this. If anyone has any ideas I will be willing to try anything. I know from my own experience most of my YouTube viewing is on my phone and I want to be able to get the right quality out of it.

Hey, I'm looking to start streaming but my computer can't seem to handle it, yet I can fraps at 60 fps at full-size. Fraps, at least to my knowledge, has always been CPU intensive, just like OBS for streaming so I thought they would translate relatively well, but for the life of me I can't stream almost everything. Here is my spec list, also my obs log. If you could help me adjust settings/or tell me I can't stream with my hardware that would be great. CPU: I5-4690k @3.5 Ghz 16 gigs of ram 64 bit Windows 7 Professional GTX 770 with 2 gig vram OBS logs: https://gist.github.com/fb1ab13064d0ae8d2d7c Also, I have tried shadow play to record/stream, but everything looks out of focus and grainy. Any ideas why? Thanks, just tell me if I need to add anything else! Edit: My upload speeds are 100Mbps+

Hey guys, just having a little trouble recording PC games. I've tried DxTory but the recording ALWAYS lags whenever I try it. I've not really gone with fraps because of the huge file sizes and I don't want to deal with that. I'm just wondering why I'm having such a hard time recording PC games. If anyone can give me some advice or tips on what I should do. Here are my specs: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vCmWqs I also have an HDD that wasn't added in that list.

I have the ASUS ROG PG278Q 1440p 144Hz G-Sync monitor which worked just fine until yesterday. When I started the computer, I noticed weird behaviour in my mouse movement and game performance. It seems like the well known Vsync lag is there when I just browse the internet or when I'm on the desktop. So I used Fraps to show my FPS ingame and it showed me that the refresh rate was at 143 FPS, not at the usual 144 FPS which I always saw there til yesterday. I tried turning G-Sync off and on again but that didn't work. It seems like the missing 1 frame kinda messes up the smoothness of the monitor. It is especially annoying since it also affects the mouse acceleration. Does anyone have or had similar problems or any idea how to fix the G-Sync of this monitor?

Hey Guys, I like to record some games I play and do the general youtube thing but I want to maximize the quality I can post. My System Specs are: i7 3770 8 GB DDR3 R9 270 2TB Western Digital Green I know this isn't a detailed description but I imagine it's all the important stuff. Fraps obviously doesn't like 60 and will hover around 56-60 which can result in choppy video. Dxtory is great but my drive which is singular obviously can't support 60 Fps and the game. OBS is great but seems to have off days producing choppy video some days then perfect video other days. Bandicam seems the only one able to keep up most of the time while maintaining decent quality. I don't know if there is better software or ways I can setup current software to work better with my system. I want to achieve 60 FPS at 1080p. I hear windows 10 has one built in does it record 60 FPS? Leave any suggestions you have below

Open Broadcaster Software (OBS for short) is one of my favorite pieces of free software. It's extremely versatile in function, allowing you to do many things that paid software can do without spending a dime. What is OBS? Plainly, it is a program that allows you to stream to many different sources as shown below, or record to local storage. It allows you to set up multiple video/image/text sources on your scene to add whatever you may need. Game? Obviously. Facecam? Can do, will do. Want to set up a ticker when someone subscribes or for relevant stream information? That's possible. What is QuickSync? QuickSync is a technology that Intel implemented in 2011 on the Sandy Bridge architecture of its CPUs. When enabled, your computer will do video transcoding using the integrated GPU on your processor instead of using your cores or a dedicated GPU. Other reading. Okay, why does it matter? Why use it compared to Raptor or ShadowPlay and FRAPS? Good question! A lot of this comes down to personal preference and is based around low level computer hardware in theory. Both Raptor and ShadowPlay still have an impact on performance, not much, but that little bit can make a difference between hitting smooth enough frame rates and starting to get annoying stutters and lag. In the case of FRAPS, as will be shown below, for a low end system that will not be the solution. Why deal with that when there's a zero-impact solution that does better? The main benefit of QuickSync is that your CPU and GPU have alleviated loads because there's no extra encoding done on them, allowing your tasks such as gaming to run at full speed unimpeded. Why not FRAPS? Everyone uses FRAPS! Fraps was useful when it released, it was one of a handful of good recording programs for games that wasn't watermarked and provided performance metrics that were useful. Downside? Your performance tanks if you want good quality. And you'll have a hard time of storing all your videos. 24 hour gameplay session you want to put on YouTube? I hope you have a large RAID array for all that footage. I've done a test, some variance between the runs but the point is made nonetheless. FRAPS will do worse for your framerate for the same, but I'd have to argue worse, quality. Here we have the test shown running with QuickSync, unfortunately I have no ability to point a camera at my monitor and run it without OBS recording, so you'll have to take my word that there's no performance impact. FRAPS? Good luck playing with that frame rate. And of course, the quality. The above was recorded in OBS (Again, OBS did not effect frame rate) but you'll want the raw footage to see for yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-Bo1Wno05c Remember the difference in file sizes I mentioned? FRAPS took up 4.22 GB for a shorter run, 106 MB using OBS for the same quality. You've convinced me, my computer is not the best, I don't have Linus' storinator, and I want to upload my gameplay to YouTube. Where do I begin? Congratulations on taking your first step to a better recording experience! To begin, we must verify that your CPU is even able to begin the task of QuickSync encoding. Now, I'm a lazy person, too much so to deal with Intel's website, so we'll use Google-fu. Open up Google and type in your CPU's name. But I don't know what it is?? It's just an Intel! Okay.. Back one step. Press your Windows key or click the start menu, we're about to search up in this bish. Type "dxdiag" with no quotes. Click dxdiag.exe. You'll get a window like this, you can find your processor shown with the red arrow. Okay! I've found out what I have! Excellent, back to Google-fu young grasshopper. Nine times out of ten if you put in your processor tier (i3/i5/i7) and SKU you'll get the first or second result from Intel's website. Click that link. Now you've found your way to Intel's spec-sheet page. There's a lot of interesting information here, but only one field that's necessary for our needs. Intel Quick Sync Video. If the circled field says "Yes" then you're in luck! You're able to do this! Click on "Software Downloads" now. Sort by your operating system, and change the relevance to "newest." Download the latest driver for your system, making sure it's not the Pentium/Celeron driver if that's not what you have. Install the driver. Now what? Well, first you need to go in your BIOS and enable the iGPU even when there's a dedicated one in the system. This varies by system, motherboard, etc. Make sure you have the latest BIOS version (hey this site is helpful to find out how to do that) and enable it. Now, I've followed the following video the first time I did this, but I think I can summarize it pretty well. Not using the LTT video because quite frankly it's...lacking... Right click your desktop and hit "Screen Resolution." Press the "Detect" button in the top right. So far in all of my testing and with various evidence you are going to need to have a secondary monitor plugged in to your motherboard in order to enable the iGPU so you can capture with OBS. As I've shown, it's easiest to just set it to the top left corner using a second input on your primary monitor and just ignore it. Top left because you will very rarely, if ever lose something up there. And if you do you can just use OBS to show the screen without having to change input settings on your monitor. Which is nice. Now, sometimes this is all you'd need to do for enabling QuickSync. But in my case, and probably yours, you'll have to plug in a monitor to the motherboard. Roll your eyes at this, I know. But it's a necessary requirement it seems. You can do what I did and plug your motherboard in to your current monitor for all intents and purposes. As you can see above, I have mine plugged in to my current monitor, set it to a low resolution and move it to the very top left. I'm not likely to accidentally lose a window or my cursor with it there, so that's how I use it. If you have a second monitor to use however, go right ahead and use it as you normally would. Done! How do I have fun in OBS now? Home stretch, we're almost there. Start OBS, click settings, and go to the encoding tab. This is where the magic starts. There'll be a radial button for QuickSync, click it. Now personally, I set my bit rate to 60,000 and enable CBR (constant bit-rate) for maximum quality no matter the scene, and it works well, as shown above. If you're streaming however, set it at most to 3,500, no higher. Set your output folder, and file name. Make sure when you're setting it that you switch from *.flv files to *.mp4 files. You might notice in the top file path box I have D:\OBS\OBS-$T.mp4, the file name is OBS.mph but the -$T is a sequence to add the full date and time that the file was recorded. Handy if you need to keep track of multiple files instead of renaming it constantly. Here are my video settings, I prefer recording at 1080p and 30fps because my system can't maintain 60 all the time. And it helps keep the file sizes even smaller. But this is all up to what you want to do. Next you'll want to make sure you QuickSync preset is set to 1 for best quality, enable CFR to make sure your frame rate doesn't fluctuate, change your encoding profile to main, and the keyframe interval to "2." Notice you are able to set OBS to allow recordings/streams up to 120 fps. Finally, set your audio options and whether you want the microphone/sound device muted in OBS on the main window (enabled shows red by clicking on the speaker/mic icons, gray is muted). After that you can set up your scene? Yup, this is the very last step. On the main OBS window you'll see two white boxes, the one on the left is your scenes and the one on the right are the sources for your different scenes. This is helpful for when you need different overlays on what you may be doing, but don't want to constantly create and recreate scenes. Now, there are orders to how sources is listed. Sources at the top will be overlayed on top of sources below them. In general you'll want a game to be the very bottom source so everything else is overlayed as shown in my example at the top of the post. To add a source to your scene just right click on the source box, mouse over "add," and click what you would like. Window Capture - This is for capturing a window you have open, say Chrome, Spotify's playlist, etc. Here you have options to select what you want to do with the window you've selected. Notable options are a sub-region, so you can select only a section of the window instead of the full window, and a color-key so you can make a window transparent except for certain colors inside (helpful for say a twitch chat). Monitor Capture - This is for adding a source showing your entire monitor, useful if you're wanting to record a guide shown on your desktop. Image - Adds a still image to your space, I personally can't find any uses for it except maybe a short FAQ or tip jar maybe? Choices are endless. Image slideshow - This is like the Image option, but allows you to select multiple images to rotate between showing. Text - Plain text can be added to the space. You can choose font, color, size, formatting, etc. Video Capture Device - This is for use with capture cards or webcams. Game Capture - And here we have the most important source, game capture. Open your game and alt tab, refresh on the preferences and use the drop-down menu to select your game. Resize or set it to stretch and even ignore aspect ratios to make it fit your space and you'll be up and running. Done? For realsies? Done. The only thing left is for you to set up your personal scene and get cracking on those videos. If you all have any questions don't hesitate to ask, I don't know everything but I can give it a good shot and will at least lead you in the right direction. Yay for a year overdone guide going up.

(In Fraps that is) I've looked everywhere and cant seem to find a answer. I only play Battlefield 4, and want to record my gameplay, but my FPS drops to like 25-30 FPS when recording at 1080p LOW settings. Im not looking for a OVERKILL PC, just one that will be able to handle the above mentioned! What components should i start upgrading/replacing, in order to get 60+ FPS WHILE RECORDING!? Current Pc specs  Motherboard - Gigabyte - GA-Z77-D3H (rev. 1.0) CPU - Intel Core i5 3330 3.0Ghz Socket 1155 RAM - 8GB Corsair Vengence DDR3 1600mhz GPU - PowerColor R9 270X (Not Oc'ed) PSU - Baobab 550w HDD 1 - 250GB Western Digital 7200RPM (for OS and games) HDD 2 - 1TB Western Digital 7200RPM (For recordings) Thanks for your help in advance! Hasie

I have a decent PC for gaming and I get about 400 fps on Minecraft on average, but whenever I try to record game-play using Fraps it doesn't just halve the frame rate, it goes down to about 30-50 fps. I know Fraps drops your frame rate down but this seems too excessive for a recording software. Anyone know whats up? Anything I could do to improve frames or is it just my fraps settings? (even though there are hardly any) Thanks
