I have been folding at home on my rather old iBuyPower gaming PC that I also still use for work. However, it's not going very fast, and I would like to increase my folding power, plus I am also due for upgrading my work computer. I'm not very knowledgeable about computer hardware, so I was wondering if I could get some pointers here. 1) What would be a good desktop PC I can buy new that I could use for my regular work (some minor video editing and Photoshop involved, but nothing major), but would also be good for folding in the background? Looking at prices up to around $1300. 2) How can I optimize my old PC for folding? I'd like to just run it 24/7 for only folding. The current specs are as follows: Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz Memory (RAM): 16.0 GB Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Gaming graphics: 9975 MB Total available graphics memory System type 64-bit operating system Number of processor cores: 4 Is there a graphics card that is under around $400 that I could replace the old one with that would significantly increase the folding capacities? Hey so i took what is normally my cpu rendering server added all the gpus i had laying around in the 2 empty pcie slots and started folding for the ltt team, problem is my 3800x and gtx 1080ti hybrid are cooking and crushing them proteins but my R9-390 is sitting at idle ive tried a couple things and looked for guides but got no results anyone else find a solu tion.

Hi Guys this is my 1st post ever. Thank you for your time reading this. So im a novice folder i don't quite now if i should be folding now. My CPU has been getting little hot 90c i have an air cooler ill post my build . But i plan on getting an AIO cooler at some point hopefully that would help with temps. Im also planning on moving to a new case and plan on adding additional fans for ventilation. The 1st link is my current build and second link is basically the same just moving into a new case. Hi: I recently purchased a Dell PowerEdge R710 server with 32gb of RAM and a pair of slower quad-core processors with the intention of planning to play with some virtualization stuff on it. I also want it to do some a good bit of folding on it as well. When running a Linux Mint Mate 19.3 install on bare metal, it will crank out around 30k points a day quite steadily. However, with Proxmox as a hypervisor and running Ubuntu server in a VM with all 8 cores devoted to it, its given me all sorts of numbers, first 70k for a while, then 30k for a bit, then finally it drops down to about 12k points per day where it has been pretty steady for about an hour now. I am assuming the first number was some kind of anomaly. I was expecting to take some kind of hit from the overhead of the hypervisor and all that but not THIS big a hit. Is this what I should be expecting, or is there something I should be looking for in my Proxmox configuration or what? Brand new at VMs, so any help would be appreciated. >>>BULLET>>>

So recently I have saved up enough for 1 machine that I can just use for programs like folding@home and i heard it works better on linux, mostly cause it uses less ram, therefore saving me money. Just wondering, does linux need to be activated like windows? (I know you dont technically need to activate windows, but I just want to know if you should get a code or something to activate linux) and i will most likely be using Kali, as it'll fit nicely onto my small spare blank 250gb hdd. i probably wont have an ssd in it. It is Debian based I think, which means it should be able to run folding, but if im wrong someone please correct me. also it will be using an oem hp compaq motherboard, which shouldnt be a problem according to my research, but let me know if I am wrong. I recently got two Sapphire HD6970 cards, but they're the blower style cards and they're loud af and they barely fit in my case anyways. I had an ATX motherboard laying around, new in box, because I bought it 3 or so years ago, not realizing my case only fit a micro-ATX. Having recently installed a Linksys WRT56G in the shed to get some internet there, I started planning to move the Folding rig to the shed. There it can be as loud as it has to be without bothering me. Mounting an ATX board to the wall: I used these little hammer-in M3 size nuts to get some mounting points: Mounting the Gigabyte Z77 board on the wall with the i7-3770 and RAM already installed: Using spacers behind the board to get the right distance from the wall, this is the result: Next up is the power supply, it gets a spot right underneath, little protection pads to avoid scratching the cover: Whatever gauge wire I had laying around to strap it in: Screwing some 120mm fans to the wall to get some airflow across the parts: An assortment of SSDs: Hooray, it is alive. Up next is mounting those heavy 6970s Ready for business. Tested and working correctly.
