  1. Okay so, I bought a 4070 ti super on launch, I got it, it was defective and i returned it. after waiting a whole month, I got my refund and I bought a different kind(zotac holo). This time when I had it all plugged in, in it caught on fire. keep in mind I triple checked power cables. I took it out immediately and tried booting it without the gpu and my system is fine. Is it my motherboard? is it the gpu? power supply? cords? Should I start my 30 day return and just suck it up for another month? It took me so long to save for my computer and im just so upset right now.
  2. Lack of information from manufacturers Android phone manufacturers on OS upgrade paths (in years) and security updates (in years), as well as HOW TO FIX IT! We know that device manufacturers Android phone manufacturers are only concerned with increasing income by selling new products. We know they will only respond to negative publicity. We are aware that there is no transparency about such a crucial topic as there is for food like "Nutritional Facts Labels". This information should be front and center, right below Price! Security should be made Sexy! So, in the comments, remind your favorite tech influencers to always ask the manufacturer Android phone manufacturer how many years of updates and security patches come with the gadget before accepting the "Press Pack." Also, if the manufacturer Android phone manufacturer does not respond via email, mention it in the video. "Because manufacturer Android phone manufacturers XYZ has not disclosed the OS upgrade path or security update durations in years, assume that this device phone / tablet will not receive updates." "Phone does not have an unlocked boot-loader, this Android phone manufacturer is creating Ewaste" ( credit user E-waste ) Put it on the screen and say it in the video along with the price. When organizations such as LTT and MKBHD start doing this, small and midsized reviewers will follow. This negative publicity will may eventually drive device manufacturers Android phone manufacturers to announce, "Look, we're selling this device phone for $199, you get the device as is." Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Please let me know in the comments if this is a bad idea. This post was inspired by Louis Rossmann's recent video about end-of-life Chromebooks being sold by our friendly neighborhood online flea market. Please feel free to turn the comments in to a dumpster fire , so the topic gets visibility. Maybe one of the LTT phone reviewers will read this. Edited for clarity ... this is about Android phone manufacturers not all other manufacturers of devices, including but not limited to washing machines, lawn mowers and "Rosie the robot nanny".
  3. TLDR: PSU cable burnt out at the sat connector causing a small fire burning through 8 cables: 3 from the PSU, 1 temp gauge sensor wire extension and 2 SATA cables and 2 usb 2.0 internal head cables going to the front IO and a fan filter (see photos). PC runs fine with replaced cables, though I have alot of soot removal to do luckily it's a black case not a white one! So I open the office door and I see a smokey room and smell of burning electronics. Nice. Should be a good Friday then... Feel free to chuck your guess for the issue below, just about to start looking into the issue (6pm GMT 7/4/23). Yea... This is my only and so main pc (luckily I can trouble shoot with another pc though it isn't mine). Yea... I understand data back ups etc, don't do what I should. It's old, 4770k era but its would I got. Overclocked to as much as it'll take 4.6ghz. Watercooled, custom loop, CPU, VRMs and GPU. Yea.. I know my psu is over the top Im aiming for a very quiet pc ie it runs fanless also all the time. Yea... I know my water-cooling is really over the top. Again, the aim was to not be able to tell it my pc was on even when gaming (I was successful if your interested). Water-cooling is serviced semi regularly but not in the last 9-12mo. Yea.. that's alot of fans....none run above 500rpm, at 90% of the time at least 6/8 rad fans are off (4+ hrs of anno 1800 just about has them all spinning.. just) Anno 1800 has a population of over 100k if your interested. I'll update as I learn what is and isn't okay. Enjoy the thread... naturally if I get stuck I'll add a question or two. Specs: i7 4470k # 4.6ghz 32gb ddr3 corsairs lpx memory. Mobo: Asus Formula (VI I think). Z68. PSU: bequiet dark power 12 1000w ( a recent addition following my 1000w seasonic platinum died after nearly 12 years. MSI 1080ti Aero OC (custom OC + voltage curve) runs at round 2ghz. 6 SSDs: 2*2tb(software raid 1, personal videos and photos). 4*500gb (1 is the boot drive), other are games drives) Case Corsair 900D Water cooling: 2*480 alpha cool all copper 60mm deep rads, D5 pump, alpha cool XSPC pump top, EK CPU, GPU blocks, EK reservoir, Asus mobo block (VRM). Fans: 4*bequiet solvent wings 3 (in exhaust, 3 intake. 8 Corsair SP120 fans on rads (4 intake, 4 exhaust). Fluid: mayhem's pre mix (X1 I think). If you made it this fair vote in the poll: What died? https://strawpoll.com/polls/eJnvvDXKxnv And a bonus fact, there is a known slow leak on the drain fitting however this is below all components and electronics and drops maybe once every week through a whole on the bottom on the case. Wish me luck. Update: 09:30pm. Good little fire, burnt out 8 cables and a fan filter. Appears the power cable burnt up between the PSU and an SSD. Everything I can confirm smells rough... With any luck some airing out and a good clean can fix that. Time to buy some cables and hopefully there aren't any other issues remaining. Sorry to those that figured a leak or terrible component failure. Complete 10am 08/04/2023 PSU cable burnt out at the sat connector causing a small fire burning through 8 cables: 3 from the PSU, 1 temp gauge sensor wire extension and 2 SATA cables and 2 usb 2.0 internal head cables going to the front IO and a fan filter (see photos). PC runs fine with replaced cables, though I have alot of soot removal to do luckily it's a black case not a white one!
  4. Hello Linus community. I have a situation and need to know how to proceed. 1st, the background. I was getting the blue screen of death randomly yesterday, then after it rebooted the system would hang at loading the highpoint rocketraid card. So manually reboot and it worked, onto windows we went. But then at random intervals later bluescreen again. And again hanging at highpoint rocketraid card. After mucking around trying to fix it (driver updates ect...) to no avail, I just left the system running and went to sleep. Next morning, BOOM, the smell of fried circuitry. But alas, system was in windows happy and snappy but no rocketraid card detected at all. Now until I had opened the case and seen the damaged I didn't know what I had smelt was burned circuitry, so I had the system running for a good few hours before I decided to look inside to find the culprit, and holly heck it did some damage. (check photos here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/11mT3JOGVim74PC6FqKNY_Pb8kKylNr_h?usp=sharing or attached) Now to my question. I know that the system will boot into windows and run, it was doing that for several hours al be it on idle. But I feel like I've just dodged a burnt down house and that my mind and gut is telling me "don't you dare plug that system back in until you've replaced the motherboard!" I'm going to lean on your experience here because this has never happened to me before. Do I plug it back in and see how it goes, or replace the motherboard before I even consider plugging it back in. Or are there even other options like disabling the damaged PCIE lane to mitigate any risks so I can carry on using the rig. Your thoughts please and thanks
  5. Hi, I have been using Lunar Client for a month or two now, but there is one issue I can't figure out No matter what texture pack I use, what setting I change, the lunar client fire texture stays the same Here is a picture of it
  6. Hello LTT Forum, My CORSAIR RM SERIES RM850 850W '80 PLUS GOLD' MODULAR POWER SUPPLY (CP-9020196-UK) Caught Fire. I walked into my office and the room was full of white smoke. As I could not see flames I guessed it was an electrical fire. I managed to turn off the power to the room and opened all of the windows and the smoke cleared after a couple of minutes. I have the PC completely disconnected and on the floor. I located the source of the fire by smell as the PSU reeks of burning plastic. If I hadn't gone into that room for the rest of the day I don't know what could have happened. Is there a known fault with this powersupply? I upgraded it a year ago because my old one a KOLINK KL-600 600W '80 PLUS BRONZE' POWER SUPPLY didn't have the Wattage to comfortably power my new 3080. The PC has been running completely fine for the year that I have had it, until now. Kind of in shock. But happy the fire didn't spread.
  7. Hi all, I am a new member on this site and am looking for help on identifying the possible (defective) components which played a key part in burning my GPU's connectors and making my main PCI-E port completely unsuable. The story goes like this: Earlier today, I was playing ETS2 (Multiplayer, so TruckersMP), on ultra, thought nothing of it as I have been playing on the same setting for years, my steering wheel was also plugged into the computer. I do like keeping quite a few tabs open, mostly related to school, forums or videos I find interesting (and I keep Spotify open as well). When out of nowhere, my computer shut off, I didn't think anything as my parents were working in the basement, and I had thought they had done something like cut power to the house, however the computer tried to turn on multiple times, all failing, then I noticed an almost orange flame appear, with a strong burnt plastic scent, and that is when I unplugged my computer. (keep in mind that I built my computer almost three years ago, and have had the same GPU for about two years now) Later I opened up the computer, to yet more burnt plastic, I noticed that the main PCI-E slot was burnt, and when I took out the GPU, I noticed that only the three power pins on the GPU were burnt, and the rest were completely intact, and the left-hand portion of the entire PCI-E slot had been burnt. I booted up the computer again, without the GPU and all worked well, and is still working well, hence why I am on it, typing to you. Although I now lack a PCI-E slot. I am now trying to figure out what caused this so that it should be quickly replaced. I checked with a few refurbishing vendors and they said that they can repair the GPU for around $200. (rough estimate, am going to show them the card in person) Currently, I think it was an issue with the power supply, as upon opening the case, the GPU was properly secured in place. I don't think it was a power surge becuase my house is new enough to protect against those, but my PC being plugged into an extension does worry me. Specs: Intel Core i5-8400 ASRock Phantom Gaming D Radeon RX580 8GB (overclocked it about 6 months ago) Patriot Viper Steel DDR4 16GB MSI Z370-A PRO LGA 1151 Motherboard EVGA 500W PSU (rating: 80+ Plus white) One AOC monitor (plugged into GPU) and one Dell monitor (plugged into motherboard, being powered by iGPU) Kingston 500GB SSD + WD Blue 1TB Attached below are pictures of the PCI-E slot, and the burnt power pins on the GPU. If you would like more clarification on something do not hesitate to reply. Large thanks to the brilliant LTT community.
  8. Hi guys, This is my first ever post here. I have been an avid LTT viewer for years, but never came over to the forum until today. Thought I could share what happened to me. Today at around 9:13am Scotland time, I got a call to say my housewas on fire. I rushed home as quickly as possible, and thankfully the fire brigade had already made it there before me. Me, my family and both my wonderful dogs managed to get out safely, which is the most important thing. Unfortunately, my gaming PC was swallowed up in the fire, along with our computer equipment I had. This is a sad goodbye to my Minecraft & World of Warcraft playing. It wrenches my gut to say it.. I hope everyone else is well, and have had better days than me. My thoughts today are with those in Ukraine facing far worse than this right now. Have a good night Yours, Ben ps. I have included pictures of the devastation, along with a slightly outdated photo of what was my setup. I had since upgraded the graphics card. Doesn’t matter much now though
  9. Well, title says it. My fan PCB voltage regulator caught fire. Any reason it would of done this? It’s a crappy unbranded thing. The cables seem to be okay, and so do the fans that were connected to it, so what happened??
  10. First, a story: Some friends of mine who play in my D&D group were hanging out at home when smoke started to fill their apartment. In moments, fire burned through the walls. They made it out with only one phone, no shoes, and one friend only in his boxer shorts. The most heartbreaking detail is that they couldn't even get their cat out in time. The fire was started by a negligent neighbor who'd left their portable AC unit plugged into a power strip and left the apartment. I've been in a position where I lost everything before, and I know what a difference even a little bit of help would have made for me, so I racked my brain thinking of a way I could help. There's no replacing a furry friend, and while they had insurance, I know how long that process could take and most of their receipts would have been lost in the fire, too but I remembered my buddy had a gaming rig that was also destroyed by the fire, so I sprang into action. I had a Ryzen 3400G, Corsair Vengeance LPX 2666Mhz RAM, and a Cooler Master Master Air CPU cooler on-hand after upgrading my system, so my roommate and I went halves on a motherboard, psu, and case to build our friend a little starter rig to upgrade on over time. We went with an Aorus x570-I and a Fractal Ion 650W SFX in a Cooler Master NR200P. When I broke the news to my friends, they were taken aback and very thankful. Then, they sent me a pic of the PC that was in the fire. It honestly didn't look as bad as I would have expected, so I told them to bring it when they come to pick up the new one and we'd see what we can salvage. We spent four hours yesterday cleaning and testing parts. My main hope was to salvage the AMD model Radeon RX 6800 that he had in there, as those cards are still almost double MSRP right now. First, we brushed his Ryzen 5800x with isopropyl alcohol and threw it into my own system to see if it would work. No post. It powered on for a split second, then right back off. My Asus x570-I doesn't have code readouts, so I have no idea what was wrong, but given that CPU is finally back to MSRP, my buddy wasn't too broken up about it. Next we cleaned his 32GB Trident Z Neo RAM and tried those. No post. His m.2 drives were corroded onto his motherboard from the fire hose water, so we just called those a wash. His AIO pump had begun to melt from the fire, so we chucked it, too. Now it was time for the big one, the sleek AMD direct Radeon RX 6800. We cleaned it as best we could without fully disassembling it, then threw it into his new little build. No post. Three of the four outputs were clearly damaged from the fire. The only good one was the DP port that he'd had plugged into his monitor. My friend left my home happy for his new little starter NR200P rig, but disheartened that we couldn't at least save the GPU. Hours go by and I was feeling bored, disappointed, and more than a little stubborn. I had watched a video where Der8auer managed to salvage a burned GPU that looked way worse than my friend's 6800, so I went back to work on it. I removed the top plate, unscrewed the card itself, and brushed the entire thing clean with isopropyl. I took the brush to the outputs, too, focusing on the port that had been blocked by the cord to his monitor during the fire. I blew out the massive heatsink with compressed air to try and rid it of soot and carbon buildup, as well. I'm no expert and I only knew about half of what I was doing, so I didn't want to remove the thermal pads or paste and fully submerge the heatsink or fans in water. I figured maybe, just maybe the amount of cleaning I did was enough. I was half-right. I pulled out my RX 5500xt from my own system and threw in the 6800. To my shock and utter excitement, it POSTED! I was able to boot into Windows with no problems. I immediately FaceTimed my friend to show him my bit of successful necromancy. We had a few laughs and it warmed my heart to hear the relief in his voice. He told me to enjoy the card for a bit before he came to get it, so when I ended the call I loaded Dragon Age Inquisition on Ultra, knowing that everything in my system accept my little 5500xt would handle that game. To my horror, the game ran fine until it reached the character creation screen and everything simply went black. I shut my system down and restarted, but the 6800 would not post an image again. With my spirit broken, I pulled it out and put my 5500xt back in. Sure enough, Radeon software picked up the black screen error, so I sent in the bug report and messaged a screenshot of the error to my friend with heartfelt apologies. By then, it was close to midnight and my resolve had run out, so I went to bed. Now, I've awoken this morning with no more energy left to give this 6800, but hoping at least this online community knows of a place my friend can send his card to be restored. Since it was a fire, we highly doubt AMD would RMA the card, and I think he got it cash from a friend at Microsoft who had the hookup, so he wouldn't have a receipt for the purchase, anyway. If he even DID have a receipt, it would have burned with everything else. PLEASE do not give me any more tips on how I can clean or troubleshoot any of the parts I've mentioned myself, I'd prefer a service or business my friend can send it to possibly restore the card. I gave an entire day off to this effort while sore from the second COVID vaccine, and I have to go back to work. I simply don't have any more time or energy to devote to trying to clean or fix this thing. I'm just hoping for a more affordable option for my friend to salvage it than simply paying twice MSRP for a new one whenever his insurance money comes through. Any suggestions to that end would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and I hope everyone has a fantastic week!
  11. Was at work when I got a call from my room mate rushed home and the place was engulfed in flames. I had just bought a 5800x and didn't even get to install it. I just moved in 3 weeks prior too, my PS4, switch, and my 34 inch of ultrawides are gone, along with my gaming PC. Nothing survived.
  12. I was looking to buy DP 1.4 cables, and I saw the most popular are nylon braided, afaik nylon burns really well, are these cables safe, or how would they compare to usual ones in the fire safety aspect ?
  13. I’ll keep it short. Was playing Tropico 6 and PC died. Refused to boot for longer than a split second. Suspected dead PSU or MOBO until it would boot as normal with GPU disconnected. Tried different PCIe port to no avail. Then stupidly tried to boot with 6/8 pin power connected but not connected to PCIe because CBA to unpin power. After a few seconds GPU started to smoke, crackle and light up like a sparkler. Do you think there’s any chance of fixing at a home or a shop and any idea what the original issue was? PC is still working fine without it. Thanks in advance. P.S. If I’ve been a dickhead please let me know in the comments. 14. Summary PCI-SIG (the group that governs PCIe standards) have been sending out emails to all of its members and their suppliers regarding melting 12VHPWR cables. That email was technically private, but so many groups were on the email that it inevitably got passed around and ended up in Gamer Nexus's hands too. what looks to be about the failures the new connections could have and to gather data from others about this new connection. Nvidia doing some testing, some being "extreme" and finding flaws in the prototype power supplies and cables they try to validate and if they can meet the specification of 55A continuous. During this testing, Nvidia found certain cable routing conditions led to excess heat and, in some cases, melting. Some of the flaws experienced as seen below. My thoughts Seems like they need to go back and make the standard better as they seem to be hitting a bit of a low bar in some of these failure points. Sources GN seemingly maybe getting an email from PCI-SIG, with the info/pictures provided. https://www.gamersnexus.net/news-pc/3692-intel-arc-isnt-dead-melting-gpu-cables RECENT INFO by GN On ATX 3.0 by LTT/Techquickie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGHyDuPG1ks
  15. Summary As with how the issue was around when note 7 had battery issues? It seems like there might be some hardware + software issues in older samsung models that makes the battery faulty or degrade a lot worse. As in old phones, more around the note 7 era and a bit more recent. So maybe not as old models (which likely doesn't have as big or violent batteries in them). Where some tech channels and others noted that older than s20 models had some kind of battery issue (but it seems more recent ones could have it too), which can be really serious. Its unclear what to do for now, than to be aware of older models, maybe from 2019 and older. Its not sure if this is related to anything else in production or just these phones. Also how reliable are other brands around this? Its not as explosive, but the batteries do expand to a dangerous level that can be an fire hazard. Where one can see a lot of phones bend in 2 parts instead of the fire ball from note 7 phones, ofc one are not guaranteed it will be safe when it happens or how one handles the battery. Samsung saw some of the tweets made by mrwhosetheboss around the battery issue, and likely wanted it to not blow as hard, as for taking the phones back for investiagtion on the issue. Quotes My thoughts As with lithium batteries, its serious business and more so if millions of devices can become fire hazards. some lithium batteries will have defects too, as they can be quite unstable, and by certain ratio and mixture going into the battery. Do wonder if this can also be related to produced content or samsung software. But it seems like it might be the samsung batteries that is the issue, and we can see more batteries like that if they try to push the limit in "higher capacity" lithium batteries and is more unstable. 17. Hello Everyone, so recently I built my dream watercooled PC with the following specs intel 19-12900K (NEW) ROG Maximus Z690 (NEW) 32GB Dominator DDR5 5600MHz (NEW) RM1000x Corsair PSU (1 Year Old) 2TB PCIe4.0 WD black m.2 (NEW) Gigabyte Aorus 3090 Xtreme Waterforce but after around one week of usage, I left the room for 15 minutes and the computer PSU wires caught fire, I live on campus so I went out of the building as soon as the fire alarm went off so the fire could have been going on for several minutes, and in the time, 3 cables caught the fire but it’s hard to understand which one set it off, GPU power cables, CPU power cables and RGB controller cables all caught fire, see the pictures attached, if anyone can help me as I’m struggling to understand where it would’ve come from and how I can prevent it next time Also bare in mind that there was a bang sort of sound 30 minutes before this all happened, I thought it was the pipes that blew and spewed the coolant everywhere but there was no sign, so if I’m correct, it could have been a capacitor blow but I’m not sure. the security team that went in the room to rip the plugs off the wall when it was on fire told me that the computer was still running and wasn’t off because the computer can’t tell if the wires are on fire obviously. but like I said, if anyone can help me, I’ll be extremely grateful, in the mean time to make sure that the CPU, Ram and SSD are ok, I’ve ordered a new Motherboard and a new PSU so will test them as soon as they arrive. the black cable to white power cable is for the GPU, the black cables with copper exposed and one of the copper wires melted off is for the CPU and the RGB controller cable is stuck to the CPU cable
  18. There's a TL:DR down below. On Wednesday the 16th of March there was a small fire in the room where I have my computers. Well it happened on the roof (they were fixing the roof lead), but went inside the room. No one got hurt and it was limited to a small corner in the room. Still there was a lot of smoke in the room. They used a powder extinguisher, and from what I've been told by the firemen, that had severe consequences for all my electronic devices in the room. The distance to my devices varies from 1,5 meters to a little less from the place where the powder snowed down. The PC's were off at the time. The powder goes in devices even if they are off and can cause corrosion, according to the firemen + salvaging team + cleaning company. When they took my stuff they said they'd put haste behind cleaning my PC's. Now I don't know how fast they did clean, but initially 4 weeks later I was told it was all cleaned. They did however take my PC's within 3 days and they had been running 20ish minutes tops for me to grab some files and put them on an external harddrive. Then a week later (5 weeks in) I was told they deemed my PC's, monitors etc as non usable. They haven't put anything down for my graphics tablet or my Quest 2 headset, but I can assume those are going to be deemed unusable as well. Very upsetting to say the least. Mostly because I was living on a scalper discord to just get a graphics card at a normal price and the card was not even 4 months old. Anyway, I can thankfully get money back from the insurance. I am however not sure how much money (the 2nd pc had pieces in there that are deemed "old" (anything above 5 years), despite it working more than fine. So I don't know how much I will be able to get back (all I can hope it's enough to buy at least 1 proper PC back). Hopefully this week I will get my PC back, however I was just wondering. Is there any point in trying to clean it again? If so how would I go around it. One part of me is scared if I don't clean it, it will break down even faster (a professional cleaning company did clean it, but they don't want to risk the PC breaking down in a few weeks). I will be able to use it long enough for making a back up of my harddrives etc. OR worse that powder will be spread in the room, potentially damaging any new parts I will buy for a new computer, monitor etc. Some people tell me to just make a back up and by a new computer + peripherals from the insurance money. A few tell me to just clean it and hope for the best (aka it breaking down in a few months/ years). Currently I'm torn in as what to do. Again mostly because I'm scared the powder particles might land elsewhere instead. Was hoping to get some advice/ insight through these forums. Thank you for reading. TL:DR: - Fire in computer room - Powder extinguisher used - PC + Monitor + everything else electronic deemed unusable (due to the risk of breaking down to corrosion) - Worth cleaning again myself? - Just make a back up and order a new pc (self assembled one)? Also apologies if its in the wrong section, it's not exactly offtopic nor is it troubleshooting I think.
  19. So I've been using this motherboard for 3 months and today when I started it a VRM caught fire. I've never overclocked or anything using a 600 watt Thermaltake smart power supply for Ryzen 5 2600x. Any clue what would've caused this? I am just hoping nothing else is fried at this point. Also anyone else have issues with Asus horrible customer service?
  20. Went to start FILSS today and she decided to season 10 herself. I think I've tracked the failure to my EVGA GTX 980 Ti SC, so I'm seeing what can be salvaged. I (fortunately) saw it happen and cut power at the PSU switch fast enough it didn't spread beyond here. But being the motherboard and me being officially laid off a few days ago... I'm worried. I know it's a long shot, but can anything be done here? With the GPU gone, losing the MB (and losing ram/CPU support to age) is gonna put me waaaay in the whole.
  21. I am fuming almost as much as my laptop, my omen laptop has an i7 7700HQ that has always run hot and thats why i have always used undervolting and my temperatures remain lower as 87, now im using it and i get 95 WAITING ON THE VALORANT GAME MENU HWMonitor shows that the undervolt should be functional but i still get this temps that earlier i never got! i have no idea what to do and its making me crazy since dumb omen has one fan running 2000 and the other 200 and the say that it is how its configure even tho the gpu and cpu share the heatsink basically, but having 95 C while on the menu is going to physically kill me . HELP
  22. So I bought a pre-built gaming pc but didn’t know about the wattage being 350 so I bought an gtx 1660 Super double fan. And I also currently have an fx-8350 Inside. I bought an EVGA 500 W1 psu. I really don’t want to damage my graphics card or the cpu. Should I be worried with this config?
  23. My computer had been unused for about a week. Today i switched it on, played a couple of games of Hearthstone, then left it idle for about 4 hours. After that I started playing overwatch, played for around 15 minutes when suddenly my pc switched off and I saw a flame (about the size of one from a match) coming out of my gpu, on the left side of the power connectors. I switched off the psu, pulled out the power cable and took out the gpu. No visible damage, the flame came from inside, but the smell is bad. What do you think happened and how to prevent it from happening again? I was about to upgrade soon, that's why I started tinkering with overclocking, but it ran very nicely for over a month. I just hope I don't need to get a new psu. Psu: Corsair RM750 (system has been shutdown by mobo once due to a power surge, about 2 months ago) Mobo: Asus Z97-C Gpu: AMD radeon r9 290 Asus DirectCU II OC, overclocked about a month ago at 1100MHz (up fronm 1000) and memory at 5600MHz (up from 5040) usually running at about 85 celsius when under load Cpu: Intel core i5 4570
  24. Hey guys, I want to know why my psu blasted and why whenever i turn it on an blasting sound comes with spark of fire outside the psu?
  25. This is technically troubleshooting for those that could be confused about their laptops, fyi. TL;DR: ALL ALIENWARE USERS TURN OFF "EXPRESS CHARGE" IN THE BIOS TO PREVENT A MELTDOWN. Included are pictures of the damage. Pictures of the damage: http://prntscr.com/fb5qw4 http://prntscr.com/fb5rc3 http://prntscr.com/fb5s3g I've owned my Alienware 15 R2(These issues are applicable for the 17, and 13 models as well) for around, 6 + months at this point and I've been happy it until last evening. Before I get into what occurred last evening let me give you a timeline. October: I buy the laptop November: I notice that when charging the laptop could burn you April: I notice my access panel sustained some odd rippling damage, assuming I bent it when I took it off at one point to install a 2nd M.2 May: (a week prior to today) I had an odd issue where the laptop would switch between charging and not charging, until I blew in the port(Later I'd find this was pure coincidence that blowing it would fix it)_ May: (last night) My computer experiences a complete and permanent battery failure Okay, so there's what's occurred in the past several months, here is what I discovered last night Upon removing that panel I discover that rippling affect was caused by, what I assume was a miniature fire? There was a black spot on that spot on the panel, cloth wire sheathing was burnt off and brown, the cable label was also toasted brown I talk to Customer Support, fortunately my guy was EXTREMELY helpful and Alienware computers get quick service. We went over what had happened and later confirmed my assumptions My assumption, the express charged enabled via BIOS, while VERY quick to charge the laptop probably caused the "meltdown" due to higher than normal power draw. Also, to clarify, the burned cable was the "DC-in" cable on the motherboard. Now, I assumed the high power draw was causing the heat because a laptop like this shouldn't be able to charge that fast. In 30 minutes or so the laptop would reach almost 75% charge WHILE gaming. Only recently did I shut off Express Charge through the BIOS because I was too stupid to realize that laptops don't normally charge this quickly. Unfortunately it seems Dell didn't properly test this function on the computer and has left people like me to our own devices.
