So I picked an m1 air base model up for video editing (specifically cause final cut is so much better than premiere) 2 months ago now and have had consistently amazing final cut performance. Sometimes for up to 8 hours straight, with barely any thermal throttling This is my first ever mac and first Apple product since 2014 so yeah, I don't know much But out of nowhere I had a kernel panic and then when I relaunched final cut it was running extremely sluggishly. The ONLY thing that changed was a kernel panic happened For the rest of that editing session and the next the same same sluggish performance. Random beachball after cutting a clip or any other basic edit and while playback is fine the playhead kinda jumps across the timeline as it's playing. Is it possible the kernel panic affected the final cut install? Or the macos install? As I mentioned, this is my first mac ever and I don't know much so if the answer is obvious, sorry Other essential info: I edit off the internal 256gb ssd, (I'm ordering a 2tb t7 soon since I run out of space all the time) and have some assets (sound fx) on a 2tb usb 3 Toshiba hdd. But that's not the issue cause I've done this for 2 months without issue I have bg rendering OFF because storage and there normally isn't a need for it (there is already normally smooth playback) Running macos 11.1 cause 25mbs download speed here in Australia And the Wi-Fi issues of m1 mean I can get a max of 3mbs down when on Wi-Fi (that fluctuates) Any other questions, just ask When it's not having problems (in my 2 months, I've had way more issues on mac than windows) it flies through complex 4k timelines and even basic 6k. And for $1600 AUD I'm not complaining considering the other option (Prior to m1 I mean) is a PC for $200 AU more and you miss out on final cut which is better for a myriad of reasons.

Hey guys, so I'm fairly new to this part of the internet, and I want to buy a laptop that can run ProTools, Logic Pro, Lightroom, Photoshop, and Final Cut Pro. I am currently operating on a school chromebook and do not have access to any of the above mentioned programs at home, only on school equipment. my audio engineering teacher strongly recommended buying a macbook, and think this is a fine idea, however, I am having a very hard time finding one that has the minimum specs at my price point, I have about $800 saved up for a laptop, and I just found a refurbished 2017 macbook pro with an intel core i7, 16gb ram, and 512gb storage. It seems to fit all my criteria, its only $770. Is there anything I should know before making this purchase? I trust the seller, have gotten excellent refurbished stuff from them before. I don't really care about having an awesome laptop, I just want some thing that can run the things I want to learn how to use. Thanks guys!

I want to add a timer to a clip. I already added a time code to the clip, but it keeps starting at 3 minutes instead of 0 seconds. How do I set it so it starts at 0 seconds?

Parts Summary CPU Intel i5 6600@3.6GHz Motherboard MSI H170i ProAC Wifi replaced wifi card with DELL BCM4352 Cooler Silverstone AR-06 Slim Kingston Hyper Fury 2x8GB@2133Mhz Kingston SV3000 SSD Seagate Barracuda 2 TB Harddisk AMD RX580 4GB Graphics Card Noctua NF AF12x-15 Slim Low Profile Fan (I sold my kidney to buy them) Samsung SM951 AHCI 128 GB SSD (For Boot Drive) PC Part Picker Link https://pcpartpicker.com/b/8VjcCJ Smoked Bruce5X Test in FCPX with this build (Upgrade) First Part of PC Build Logic of Part Selection (Hackintosh Upgrade Walk Through) 1. Case selection I want my PC to look like a stealth warrior but packs punch of HULK. I wanted a case that looks like sleeper. Silver stone RVZ-02 Black window exactly fits the bill. 2. Cooler selection Since the Height of the case is only 60 mm. I want to go the best slim HTPC cooler that is Silverstone AR-06. It slim, silent and does not hinder RAM. 3. Power Supply selection I want to go with Silverstone SFX-L power supply which is slim and fits case perfectly. But big pain the butt is When it is loaded and when Fan kicks in especially Low RPM, it makes very bad noise because of imbalance in rotor which is predominant when you place the case in vertical position. If I have known this before I would have never bought this power supply. Now I replaced the fan in the power supply to Noctua NF AF12x-15. Its barely audible and I'm loving it. 4. Graphics Card Initially I want to buy R9 Fury or R9 Nano but power consumption might kill my system. So went to buy the RX580. Beauty of this card is its 170 mm only length and 6 pin power connector which fits well in my case and has room for 3.5" drive. 5. Backup Disk I went with Seagate Barracuda 2TB Hard disk simply because SSD are too costly when compared to 2016 when I first built this PC. 6. Boot Disk Samsung SM951 ACHI version M.2 SSD for blazing fast boot up. Huge fan of Garageband, iMovie, and eventually Final Cut Pro. They allowed me to produce quality content which nobody thought I was using relatively basic programs for. They were intuitive, approachable, and were fun to work with, and held up at the professional level (I ran a small recording studio using only Garageband from raw input to finished tracks). What's the closest thing the Windows environment has to Final Cut Pro or even iMovie? Something that runs well, has capable features (I don't need much more than basic editing and colour grading, with perhaps some split screen stuff for more involved music projects. Thanks, Aereldor.

Hey guys! I am a freelance videographer that does mostly wedding videos and some simple corporate promotional videos. I use FCPX for my editing and I really like using it. I know there are better editing programs out there like premiere and avid. I really don't have the time at the moment to try and learn a new editing platform. For what I do, FCPX works great. Any ways, to my main point. I use a 2016 mac book pro that doesn't have dedicated GPU. I am starting to really feel the lack of processing power that I need for some projects I'm doing with higher resolution video. I recently had to make a video for a friend that filmed a show choir event for his kid and it was over two hours long at 1080p/23.98 FPS. My rendering took over 4 hours and the transcoding was over 8 hours to complete! This was just brutal, especially since I have other projects I'm working. I want to build a better rig of my own that still allows me to use FCPX. Something like a hackintosh or even a windows system with the ability to run Macintosh in a virtual window or something. Would love a dual OS system though. So, in the future I can move to a better editing software. Would rather spend something that allows me to expand and upgrade rather dropping over 5 grand on a iMac pro. Is there prebuilt systems out there that are designed for this or should I just spec out my own gear and build the entire thing myself? I just wasn't sure if there were companies out there that can do a custom pc that is designed to run apple and windows for people like me who use certain apple programs and use windows. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Would love to hear from anyone that has a system like this already and what they use! Thanks, Phil

[Macbook] help choosing the right solution
oleprohon posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hi ! I have been following LTT for a couple of years now but first time on the forums. I'm currently looking for solutions for a new macbook pro and I feel like I need help evaluating the situation. I run a small web development company with a friend for 7 years now and more recently we are doing 360 photos/videos/apps. We both just graduated and have the opportunity to travel Europe for 6 months from March to September and we will likely be filming in various formats. Here's our actual gear/situation: Late 2012 rMBP 13" (one each): they still work perfectly except for the recent video editing part Canon 70D mainly for photography GoPro 6 + Karma Drone and Gimbal (H265/HEVC not supported by our current laptops !) Insta360 Pro for 8k 360 videos Panono for 16K 360 photos Adobe CC subscription ~About 5k CAD budget to upgrade laptop(s) We bought and tried a low specs (still decent) 2017 MBP 15" and we experienced a massive performance upgrade as expected, but we were far from smooth 8k 360 video playback on a 3000 USD laptop so we returned it for now. Here's what we would be willing to deal with: Switch from Premiere to FCP for better performance Carry an external GPU (if that's any good for Premiere or FCP) Have only 1 video editing system and the other one for programming/photoshop (our current MBPs are still perfect for this) Struggle with our current laptops for a couple of weeks and buy a Coffee Lake MBP in Europe for better performance. Not have the best render times, we will mostly do this at night and it's laptops, not servers ! Here's what we would not be willing to do: Switch to Windows, sorry that's a no go. Buy a maxed out 15" MBP now since we feel like Coffee Lake MBPs are coming soon and would surely be a better investment. The problem is we are leaving in 8 weeks, they will probably not be out. Use our potato laptops for 6 months since we can't scrub timelines with any of our gear What I would prefer is to have 2 i7s 13" MBP and an eGPU that we could use on any laptop when need it so we get a lighter setup when we will be filming and not editing, while having the better battery life of the no-GPU 13" MBP when we are only programming/doing general stuff. I'm just not certain a dual core will not bottleneck the whole system ! Any ideas ?- 10 replies

Greetings. Due to all the recent buzz I've heard about Final Cut Pro being one of the most efficient and optimized video editing tools out there, I've decided to give up on the idea of a Dell Inspiron 7559 and get a MacBook pro instead to replace my ancient 2009 model that's barely clinging on to this world. However, I do know that I'm not going to be able to afford a new one, especially not one of the higher-end models, and instead thought to check out the used market. I was curious as to which models had discrete GPUs and which of them you can usually find for sale, and a tentative price. I will be in the US for a month later this year, so I probably have a better chance of getting a good deal on one than I will in my hometown. I also intend to run Windows on it via Bootcamp it and use it for some light gaming, and using a lower-resolution 900/768p monitor if necessary. I was considering getting the 2012/13 'Retina' model, as it comes with a GeForce GT 650M. I'd also like to be able to upgrade at least the RAM and storage. In short, features I need are- A Core i5 or better CPU (unless you find a lower model that can still do alright in Final Cut Pro) A discrete GPU Upgradeable RAM and storage Widespread availability on the used market Can run the latest iteration of final cut pro without a hitch Can be found for under $800 in reasonable condition. I'm grateful for any recommendations or insight that you might have to share. While I might not be able to make good on USA eBay listings, if you can something on an Indian swap site or a refurbished model from a site that can be shipped overseas, I'll be able to consider it. Regards, Aereldor.
