This has been copied from the original Community board, it will be updated shortly This will be a place for events within the Folding (and sometimes Boinc) community to be posted. It is also a good place to introduce yourself to the rest of the team and ask questions if you have them. If you have an event you would like to organize post it here and PM me about it. Current or upcoming events: In case you are actually living under a rock there is currently a global pandemic of COVID-19 which team LTT and folding@home is working to solve!!! (If you have an event you are trying to organize or would like to participate in please post in this thread and PM me) Nothing right now to announce. But a lot of changes have happened as we have a new Folding team leader: Congratulations to @GOTSpectrum Also check the badge thread as there is now also a diamond level badge for anyone with more than 1,000,000,000 points. If you need to check on final places or prize winners for Folding Month 2019 please check the blog post below as it will have all the information for you. Folding@home team LTT id#: 223518 Boinc teams are all called LinusTechTips_Team Results from past events: Folding month 2019!!! Sprint for 10th! BOINC Pentathlon 2019 LTT Official Folding Month 2018! First LTT folding week results (3/26-4/1/2018): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NerB4jOfgEG_l9mcxxMNTe6hboswk6V-hLiSLMDp7gc/edit?usp=sharing My folding story and also my reasoning for the first event: It was a long time ago when discovered this thing called distributed computing and a piece of software that will use your computer power to help fight against many diseases including cancer . When I started folding I also joined the Linus Tech Tips team (it was actually @Slick's old Ultimate Distributed Computing build that got me into it.) and considering that the mining craze had died down a bit and its still cold for those of us in the northern hemisphere. I was wondering if we could get the whole community together to donate as much of their compute power as they can to Folding At Home (yes it is true that every little bit helps) for some amount of time (title says a week but can easily be extended if we can do it). Obviously the encouragement is to fold to the Linus Tech Tips Team #223518 but since folding is a good cause no matter what there would be no complaints about folding for another team. But one of the pieces of this that really encouraged me was looking at the team ranking for LTT and realizing that we have dropped to 14th considering that when we started we were at least 11th. Long story short fold (preferably for LTT), get your friends folding get their friends folding and even if you bring in complete noobs we have a whole community here to help them. I will link the guides here as well as the video that got me into it. For those that still need some encouragement here's the video that started it all for me: New F@H (Folding@Home) FAQ & Guide for all info on how to install and use F@H: If you are too lazy for all of that here is a link to the site to download it https://foldingathome.org/#downloads If any of you have any questions or need help getting your system set up (there are some things that can be tricky at first and I know sometimes reading the guides can be tedious) please feel free to post here where people with more experience than I can help you or pm me if need be. TLDR: A team that folds together... stays together?... you know what I'm sticking with that one. Huge thank you to everyone involved from all of you and the moderators getting this pinned to people just helping each other out on setups and spreading the word to anyone here who is just folding. I never though that this was going to pick up any traction at all and now its an actual bonafide event. So thank you all and let the folding begin!

So around Christmas I bought a used GTX 1060 3GB for Folding at home, but it refuses to fold. According to the log file the FAHClient isn't detecting the card properly, it says "No CUDA or OpenCL 1.2+support detected for GPU slot 01". I tried installing the driver that nvidia provides, but I can't get past the Noveau driver that just doesn't want to disable, because when I reboot the system it just comes back. The Nvidia installer wants me to reboot so it can put files into the Noveau drivers directory to disable it, but this specific action makes the Noveau driver come back(?). The GPU is functioning as far as I can tell, it displays everything on the screen properly. By the way, FAHControl doesn't work on Debian 12 so I have to configure everything in the commandline, which has been erasing my sanity for the past few weeks (I'm fairly new to using debian so my knowledge is pretty basic). System specs: CPU: Core i7 4790K RAM: 16GB DDR3 GPU: GTX 1060 3GB OS: Debian 12 "Bookworm" F@H Version: 7.6.21 Any ideas on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated! EDIT: The CPU is folding with no issues btw. log.txt

So, I am trying to automate F@H as well as the debian PC it's running on to only fold during the day, because it runs in my bedroom and I can't sleep with the fan noise. After doing research I found the best way to automatically pause/unpause the client before the PC goes into suspension/after it wakes up again, is to edit the crontab file. Before doing that, I wanted to test if the commands in the guide I found actually worked, and inconveniently, they don't (See picture). What am I doing wrong? Side note: F@H was running during my tests.

**Disclaimer** This is a long duration project, I dont plan to produce a finished build until at least end of year earlier next if things work out well. This Project Has Been Revived, Please click the link below to go to current on-goings. I will update link appropriately... unless you want to read the whole thing then you are very much welcome to do so . 11SEPT2020 *Edit: Another Update 31AUG2022 Current revival! 18SEPT2022 Its almost alive!! Man I think life is telling me not to complete this project, anyhow new update. Possible future Folding/BOINC rig, I have been working on this idea for a bit over a 1 1/2 years now. All prices are USD and are current with the re-sellers I have researched so far as of 21March2017. Specs; Original Idea was to use a higher end CPU [previous cpu had hyper threading, I did not realize this then and changed to one with no hyper threading] and 980 TI's but this is a better build I believe, much cheaper as well. The original price was upwards in the $10k. Case: ASUS ESC4000 G3S (Includes MB & PSU) x1 1,200.00 1,200.00 CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2603 V4 1.7GHz 6-Core Processor x2 208.89 417.78 Mem: Crucial 64 16GB (4 x 16 4GB) Registered DDR4-2133 x4 527.25 527.25 SSD: WD Blue PC SSD 250GB M.2 2280 SATA III 6GB S x1 89.99 89.99 GPU: Asus TURBO-GTX1080-8G x4 463.53 1,854.12 $4,089.14 This is my more recent idea but this one will be a bit harder to accomplish. Case: ASUS ESC8000 G3 (Includes MB & PSU) x1 3,200.00 3,200.00 CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2603 V4 1.7GHz 6-Core Processor x2 208.89 417.78 Mem: Crucial 64 16GB (4 x 16 4GB) Registered DDR4-2133 x4 527.25 527.25 SSD: WD Blue PC SSD 250GB M.2 2280 SATA III 6GB S x1 89.99 89.99 GPU: Asus TURBO-GTX1080-8G x8 463.53 3,708.24 $7,943.26 Thing is I can increase the core count with a different CPU and use either machine in double duty as either a home server or email server in addition to the Folding/BOINCing. The idea is there but I am still working on the details. I believe with the gpu I selected I can modify the cooler shroud for better flow of air. Any solid and useful ideas or comments to improve on this would be appreciated. Please be mindful that specs are to meet folding/boinc needs and and not high end top of the line specs, this would only be used/accessed by only me.

I don't know enough to know if what I'm asking is a stupid question or not (and yes, there ARE stupid questions...that "no such thing as a stupid question" ends once you exit grade school). Also...not sure if this belongs in GPUs or the BOINC/F@H forums, or both. Just posting it here for now; moderators can move as needed. With the consistent demand for GPUs and the lack of supply along with miners and scalpers in the mix, I was curious if Nvidia's hash-limiter efforts on newer GPUs could impact compute performance on various distributed compute applications such as BOINC and F@H? Along those same lines, could their line of coin-miner-targeted cards without display outputs be ok for BOINC/F@H purposes?

As I start to get ready for the warmer months, looking at still contributing to the greater folding cause I am starting to wonder if their is any point putting my CPU's in the folding loop. Right now I have a 10900X and 10900KF both sitting at about 5GHZ, and they are able to spend about 80% of their day folding, but combined at all 40 cores in the folding mix, I am getting under 1 Million points off of them. The 3090 and 2080's are giving me a tad over 11M. At this point I am just not sure that even having the 1M points per day involved is worth the heat offset from the processors. Has anyone else just stopped bothering with CPU folding? I feel like it may not be worth the effort and heat.

Light games to play while folding?
Xaxiel9106 posted a topic in Folding@home, Boinc, and Coin Mining
Weird question... Can anyone recommend games that the play while folding in the background? I try to run it as much as possible, but I did build a gaming PC for a reason. I have Music Racer which doesn't slow down F@H much but I wonder if anyone else knows games can be played on top of folding without losing too many points/burning down their house. (I do only have 1 GPU, will need a PSU upgrade before even thinking about just chucking another one in for 24/7 folding) -
From the album: Briggsy public stuff
proof that folding can be done with a hodge podge of cards. it takes a lot of tinkering and finding the right combination of drivers and monitor outputs, but it can be done... just don't ask me how because YMMV© Briggsy

I'm curious...recently I've just been doing GPU folding with F@H, Medium Power. GPU is a 1080Ti. The estimated credit on these GPU folding projects might start at like 120k, but over time it goes down to like 77k...why is the estimated credit decreasing? What factors affect the credit/points just in terms of basic folding mechanics?

It's been 2 damn weeks.... I just want a passkey, I enter all the right things(my Folding@Home name and gmail, which I presume is the same as email..) into the form and it says "passkey sent"- BUT IT'S BEEN 2 DAMN WEEKS........ I tried with 4 different gmails today because I was tired of waiting- and none of them got anything... I checked the spam&all mail tabs.... I want a passkey to participate in the covid_19 ltt event, and it said that I had to get a passkey to participate- Problem is I can't.... Also while I'm at it another bug- On Google Chrome the web control site keeps refreshing indefinitely and only way to fix it for ~24-48 hours is to clear the google chrome cache history, but that's annoying af... I saw people complaining about long passkey send times, but they were complaining it took hours or days to send- IT'S BEEN 2-3 WEEKS by now.... Why is that? :(... If anyone knows anything, please let me know- Thanks!

I am attempting to install the folding at home client and control programs in Ubuntu and whenever I run the installation command sudo dpkg -i /home/alex/Downloads/fahclient.deb and I get the error Errors were encountered while processing: fahclient I am not sure what this means but it won't install through the Ubuntu software app either. The control app works fine but I obviously need the client for it to work. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone, Back on the Folding wagon after years I (totally idiotically) forgot about it. Harnessed my kinda-newly-built 3700X/RX590 system, and my work laptop (i7-7700HQ/940MX) for the job. Apart from having lots of issues getting WUs ("No WUs available for this configuration" error -- always gets stuck @ download, needs to pause and restart client to maybe get it back to work), when both systems fully work I seem to be getting a kinda-low Total Est. PPD, I think? Main PC gets around ~680,000 PPD, laptop gets around ~59,000 PPD. Does this seem correct? I'm literally folding for about 2 weeks (trying 24/7, but again, I need to restart client once in a while to try and get WUs. If I don't, it enters this DL attempts loop which getting longer each iteration), and all I managed to get by now is somewhere around ~3,100,000 points Thanks!

Hi, i've got back into folding but Nord vpn on my pc seems to block f@h from getting any units, when i disconnect it works. Any tips i could try? tia Paul.

I've let the PC run 24 hours a day, just to run boinc and F@h. Been not feeling good enough to game really. My username is Exit0ne . Here is the link for F@h. https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=997069

Hey Guys So this summer I bought an RX5700, & a ryzen 3500 (6 core, 12 thread, but you new that), B450 motherboard. I installed everything and it works great. I did have to replace the cooling as the stock cooler was the issue. Getting up to 97 C, So I replaced it with a better cooler today and decided to add in my old GPU (RX 460) to help with folding at home. On startup my system I get to the login and as soon as I click anywhere Blue Screen Of Death. The error I got was: System_Thread_Exception_Not_Handled_Error I took out the GPU and the system runs supper quiet and cool now. I then tried to download the driver but its bundled with all AMD drivers and won't install unless i have the drive plugged in, and its not like hot swappable. ( I can't plug it in with the machine on) I did try to boot Safe mode but it just won't for some reason! getting to be very frustrating Here is the full system specs: CPU: Ryzen 3500 GPU: RX5700 & RX 460 Duel 2G 32 GB DDR4 Trydent Z 3200 MGZ M.2 1TB SSD Toshiba 2 X 120GB SSD (sata) 2TB HHD (sata) 640 W Power Supply 4 extra cooling fans ( I have a cat so i need a filter on the inlet, With a filter you need to keep good a good fan but i'm not so multiple cheap fans it is )

Hi! So I am trying to get the following setup to work: In the NAS are 2 GPUs, one for Plex and one for a VM that plays the media. Both are mostly idle, so I figured I could run F@H. For the VM it was easy enough, just run the program inside. Where I'm struggling is getting the linuxserver F@H docker to work with GPU passthrough. Here is the error from the F@H log: 19:32:30:WU01:FS01:Starting 19:32:30:ERROR:WU01:FS01:Failed to start core: OpenCL device matching slot 1 not found, make sure the OpenCL driver is installed or try setting 'opencl-index' manually And here is my Docker config: I also tried to run it with "all" for the visible devices and with no other docker or vm running, didn't work either (and even if that would obviously be incompatible with my setup). So two things: Any ideas what I can do for troubleshooting? Can my setup even work? Didnt really find info on "split" GPU assignment.

Creating a place to discuss the Folding@Home Babysitter script It has been noticed that pause and un-pausing slots that are stuck in a waiting status looking for work has improved the clients ability to connect and download work units. That's where the Babysitter script that @danielocdh wrote comes in, it checks the Folding@Home client periodically and pauses and un-pauses slots that are stuck waiting on Work Server Assignment. A few people are using this now to try to help manage Folding@Home clients, so I figured it might be easier to create a topic on it for instructions, feedback, in case people are having issues and to provide updates. Easier than running around the different topics that have referenced it. I've been working with @danielocdh to update this script here and there to ensure it works with the recently released version of the Folding@Home Client and fix other issues and add new features It can be found on GitHub currently, as of writing this topic, the script is at version 1.8 and will now tell you periodically if there are updates. At the top of the script you can find options as well as a how to for installing Python 3 Installing Python 3 on Windows: Installing Babysitter Script on Windows: Options Available:

I'd say I have a pretty decent rig, the one people might say "it's just about all you need" with Ryzen 5 2600X and GTX 1070 Founder's Edition. With the current COVID-19 situation, I started folding@home to lend my computer power, but as you may have noticed, I have a Founder's Edition graphics card. I do really like the look of it, but it doesn't do as well in the cooling department with the single blower style fan. While folding, the temperature hangs out around 80 degrees, but has gone up as high as 83. Which reminded me of the very first LTT video I ever saw (and what got me into this mess): That video was a cringe to watch even when I didn't know anything about computer hardware and what a Titan was. However, that got me thinking. I'm not trying to make my card into a single slot card. Could I just take the cooling component of this video? This is my original rig without any "modifications" that was about to happen. I have 2 additional Riing 14 fans in the front of the case (not shown), 1 in the back, and 2 corsair ML 120 fans up at the top pushing air out. As you may have noticed also, I have 2600X with double fan setup of Noctua NH-U12S (in their best fan color) which is more than enough even under load. Especially since my GPU doesn't pump out hot air into the case, the fans at the top is practically being useless, so I decided to put them to use. For those with allergic reaction to jank, please hit the back button on your browser. This entire "procedure" took about an hour to complete and to "perfect," including the intake fan being held up by a spare SSD. The big question now is, was it worth it? I think so. It doesn't make it run any faster (since I didn't do anything to it to boost clock speed or anything) but it does run 6-7 degrees cooler. There is almost no air leaking so it is definitely pumping cool air into it, and the back fan pumps out warm air nicely. It won't be a permanent solution (or it might be if I get lazy to take it down) but it definitely works and I'll have it up for at least awhile to help my poor GPU even a little bit while it works to make the world a better place. Finally, going back to the title of the post... If LTT has taught me one thing... Thank you for reading this journey. Not sure if this belongs here or if it should be on the FAH page, but it is still related to air cooling so I guess it's fine here

Hello everyone, first of all, English is not my mother tongue so i hope you understand what i say. I wanted to know if changing the Folding speed from "Medium" to "Full" increase GPU usage and Folding speed. I know for a fact that doing that increases the CPU usage but idk if it does the same for the GPU. So what do you guys think? Does changing the Folding speed to "Full" increase GPU usage and Folding speed? Thank you Specs: • Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 • CPU - Intel Core I5-750 2.80ghz (OC'ed to 3.1GHz) • Graphics Card - Gigabyte GTX 1050 TI Windforce 4GB (Not OC'ed) • RAM - Corsair 12GB DDR3 1333mhz • SSD - Samsung SSD 860 EVO 500GB

So I'm looking at buying twin X5670 Intel Xeon CPUs, and I was going with 96GB of RAM, but I think that's a necessary cost, so I'm going with 48GB. As far as I know, F@H is not a RAM intensive workload. I also found a Supermicro motherboard with lots of PCIe slots, so I'm hoping to just be able to throw whatever GPUs I can find in there. I would like to know what kind of performance I could expect from these two CPUs. Thanks.

Many of us on the folding front like to gear down a little during this strange mystical time of higher temperatures as we believe all our folding activities have heated up the world too much so we want to let it cool of a little. Seriously though, it can be hard to stay motivated during summer as the heat starts to climb, so to reward you for your efforts I like to run a small event. We have all the motivation we need currently with the ongoing crisis we face so I won't waffle on too much. I just want you all to know that your efforts are appreciated. What is Folding@Home Folding@home is a network of volunteer computers distributed around the world that aims to perform biomedical research with the single intent of helping to further understand and develop cures for a range of diseases such as; Alzheimer's, cancer, and Parkinson's and most recently COVID19. The exact research that is done is simulating the 'folding' of proteins in the body, this is important because the function of a protein id directly related to its physical shape. And this, when the protein is created in the body it needs to reshuffle its shape to get into the correct structure to perform its task. Many illnesses can be linked to faulty proteins in the body such as many cancers and neurological issues, along with a wide number of other general health concerns. Folding@home is one of the world's fastest computing systems, over the last few months reaching a speed of around 2.5 Exaflops due to massive support taking the fight to COVID19. Currently the network sits just over the 2 Exaflop mark, Making it four times faster than the top 10 supercomputers combined. PASSKEYS! (they're really important) Don't forget to get yourself a passkey from the link below to ensure that you hit the points requirement, the passkey is a feature that was added a while ago to the Folding Client that helps to authenticate each user on the network, an added bonus of this is the fact that it allows you to qualify for QRB(Quick Return Bonus) Points, QRBs are extra points you earn for submitting work units more quickly, such as if you have faster hardware or let the client fold full time, rather than on idle. QRB credit is awarded after 10 WUs have been submitted. You can get your passkey from the link below. https://apps.foldingathome.org/getpasskey Please remember that I will be writing my usual daily update blog once the event kicks off, the blog can be found linked below. https://linustechtips.com/main/blogs/entry/1853-prelude/ This is just a PSA for the new guys here, the folding team is historically a small close knit community, so here's a few things I'd like you all to keep in mind. It doesn't hurt to say thank you, if someone has genuinely helped you out don't forget to drop a reaction on their posts, help others where ever you can and finally we are a team first and always. Check your stats out here! Bare in mind it can take some time for your first WUs to appear so leave it a day or two. https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/search.php
